A case of recurrent, severe filarial Calabar-type oedema, causing acute discomfort in the patient, is described in a male Caucasian. An adult Loa loa worm but no microfilariae were present while Dipetalonema perstans microfilaraemia was extremely low. Treatment with mebendazole (1.5 g per day) for 21 days led to the disappearance of the clinical symptoms and microfilariae, and to a decrease of eosinophilia to normal values.

This paper presents our experience with mebendazole, a new broad-spectrum anthelmintic, in 91 cases with ascariasis, 71 cases with necatoriasis 54 cases with trichuriasis and 10 cases with T. saginata infection. Various dosage schedules were evaluated. In ascariasis, a single dose of 200 mg was effective in totally clearing the infection in 100 per cent cases. Primary school children from Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand, on endemic area of soil-transmitted helminths, were selected for study. The infected children were divided into two groups and pair-matched according to intensity of infections: group I were given albendazole (400mg) single dose and group II were given mebendazole (100mg) twice daily for 3 days. Caustic sclerosing cholangitis occurs with the use of scolicidal solutions in liver hydatid disease draining into the biliary system. In this study, we investigated the effectiveness of benzimidazole solutions, their in vitro scolicidal effects and the histopathological changes in the hepatobiliary system due to their intraoperative use. The effectiveness of mebendazole as a microfilaricide in patients with loiasis was studied. The drug regimen was 1 g twice daily for 21 days in adults. During and after treatment, the microfilarial density was unchanged. Therefore, mebendazole has no direct effect on the microfilarial density of Loa loa.
