Twenty five cases of Meckel's diverticulum were studied between 1985-1995. Eight of these were symptomatic and in the remaining 17 it was an incidental finding. The symptomatic patients presented with intestinal obstruction (5 cases), perforated peritonitis (2 cases) and intussusception (1 case). All cases of acute appendicitis were also subjected to a search for Meckel's diverticulum. Of the 25 Meckel's diverticuli encountered, 22 were resected and in 3 patients it was left in situ. Both the patients with perforated Meckel's diverticulum showed ectopic gastric mucosa. Complications occurred o

Meckel's diverticulum is the most prevalent congenital abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract. This anomaly is due to the incomplete obliteration of the omphalomesenteric duct during the 7th week of gestation and is classically located 2 feet proximal to the ileocecal valve. Variations of this congenital malformation have been recorded based on location, size, and form. While most of the population may be asymptomatic, clinical manifestation, including gastrointestinal bleed and intestinal obstruction, can emerge. Despite the frequency of Meckel's diverticulum, it is commonly misdiagnosed d

Meckel's diverticulum is a true intestinal diverticulum that results from the failure of the vitelline duct to obliterate during the fifth week of fetal development. In about 50% cases, it contains ectopic or heterotopic tissue which can be the cause of complications. A systematic review of literature was undertaken to study the history, incidence, embryoanatomy, clinical presentation, complication and management of Meckel's diverticulum. Although Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract, it is often difficult to diagnose. It may remain asym

Meckel's diverticulum is present in 2% of the population. Duplications of the alimentary tract are rare congenital malformations. The small bowel is the commonest site of alimentary tract duplication. They mimic other surgical diseases and may result in significant morbidity if left untreated. Pre-operative diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum is difficult. A case of duplication of Meckel's diverticulum is reported here.

Gangrene of Meckel's diverticulum is uncommon and its pre-operative diagnosis is difficult. We report three cases with different presentations--simulating acute appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, and strangulation of the bowel.

BACKGROUND: In this study we present our experience in the surgical treatment of complicated Meckel's diverticulum.
METHODS: The data of eight patients who underwent surgery due to complications of Meckel's diverticulum between 1994-2001 was retrospectively assessed.
RESULTS: There were six males and two females with a mean age of 31 years (range 13 to 65). Preoperative diagnoses were acute surgical abdomen in six and incarcerated inguinal hernias in two patients. Intraoperative diagnoses were as follows; Littre's hernia in two, diverticulitis in two, perforation of the diverticulum in one a

In 1978-1988 operations were performed on 92 children: 35 with diverticulitis, 7 with intestinal intussusception, 5 with hemorrhage from an ulcer of the diverticulum, 13 with strangulation or mechanical ileus, 2 with strangulated Littre's hernia, one with torsion of the omentum, 22 with secondary diverticulitis, and in 7 children Meckel's diverticulum was a chance finding during other operations in the cavities. Boys accounted for 60.9' (56) of cases. There were 12 children under one year of age, nine from 1 to 3 years, 17 from 3 to 5 years, 17 from 5 to 7 years, and 12 children aged from 7 to

We have reported a case of double Meckel's diverticulum associated with volvulus of the small bowel. On extensive review of the literature, we found no other report of such a variant of Meckel's diverticulum.
