BACKGROUND & PROBLEM: Improving the process of care may effectively improve the quality of medical care and increase patient satisfaction. An investigation found that the process of care used in our unit was imperfect, resulting in a low preoperative enrollment rate of case managers, overly long patient waiting times for ward assignment, insufficient pre-operative knowledge, and high cancellation rates for routine operations.

100 years after the infamous "Spanish flu" pandemic, the 2017-2018 flu season has been severe, with numerous infections worldwide. In between, there have been continuous, relentless attacks from (re-)emerging viruses. Prompt treatment of ill persons with influenza antivirals will be an important part of a future pandemic influenza response. This essay reviews key lessons learned from the 2009 H1N1 pandemic and the changing landscape of antiviral drug availability, and identifies and describes the multiple components needed to ensure the timely administration of antiviral drugs during a future pandemic. Fortunately, many of these planning efforts can take place before a pandemic strikes to improve outcomes during a future public health emergency.

OBJECTIVE: Hematopoietic syndrome (HS) is a clinical diagnosis assigned to people who present with ≥ 1 new-onset cytopenias in the setting of acute radiation exposure. Our goal is to develop lisinopril as a mitigator of delayed effects of acute radiation exposure in the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases program for radiation countermeasures. Published studies demonstrated mitigation of delayed effects of acute radiation exposure by lisinopril in adult rats. However, juvenile or old rats beyond their reproductive lifespans have never been tested. Since no preclinical models of delayed effects of acute radiation exposure were available in these special populations, appropriate rat models were developed to test lisinopril after irradiation.
