Healing through volunteering: psychological wellbeing in humanitarian missions.

BACKGROUND: Psychological wellbeing is a critical component of overall health, particularly for healthcare professionals who face high-stress environments. Volunteering has been associated with positive mental health outcomes, yet limited research has explored its impact on specialized medical missions. This study investigates the psychological effects of participating in a cochlear implant humanitarian mission on healthcare professionals, assessing changes in their mental wellbeing before and after the experience. METHODS: A descriptive, questionnaire-based study was conducted on volunteers …

Perception of the medical risk of spaceflight.

We conducted an opinion survey to improve the characterization of medical risk during spaceflight, using a questionnaire designed to elicit space medicine experts' perceptions of the probability, health effect, and mission impact of selected medical events occurring during spaceflight missions of 30-90 d. This questionnaire was directed toward those events about which little data currently exist, therefore medical events that have occurred during spaceflights with some frequency, such as space motion sickness, were excluded from the questionnaire. The questionnaire was mailed to 99 clinical an

Differential Impact According to Mission's Operational Intensity on Psychoactive Substance Use: A Retrospective Cohort of French Male Army Service Members.

BACKGROUND: Stressful deployments in combat areas are known to increase the risk of substance abuse in military personnel. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to compare deployment on stressful, high-intensity missions (HIMs) to deployment on low-intensity missions (LIMs) in order to understand factors associated with substance use variations across the mission. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study based on a one-shot self-questionnaire was performed four months after their return on two samples of male French Army service members: one returning from an HIM and one from an LIM. The questio

Infantile and adult mortality in precarious conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Maxillofacial surgery plays an important role in humanitarian surgery because this specialty includes common procedures such as facial reconstruction after burns, facial clefts or Noma's sequelae, which do not require complex infrastructures and thus can be carried out in sub-optimal conditions. Nevertheless, there is a mortality rate during those missions and few studies evaluating their rate and circumstances have been published. The aim of our study was threefold: to study the deaths reported during humanitarian missions, to analyze the circumstances of those deaths, and to de

Reorganisation of the Basic Life Support Segment in a Physician-Led Emergency Medical Service: A Retrospective Evaluation of Operational and Clinical Characteristics.

Background: Increasing demand for emergency medical services (EMS) challenges prehospital resource availability, particularly for time-critical emergencies requiring advanced life support (ALS). Although tiered BLS and ALS response models are established in many non-physician-led EMS systems, evidence regarding qualification-based dispatch stratification within physician-led EMS systems remains limited. This study evaluated the clinical and operational characteristics of an expanded BLS dispatch segment in Berlin EMS. Methods: A retrospective observational study analysed 2,132,246 EMS missions

[Thomas Cochrane, an extraordinary British medical missionary in modern China].

In February 1906, Union Medical College (UMC, Peking) held the opening ceremony. The establishment and operation of the College was mostly attributed to Thomas Cochrane (1866-1953) from London Missionary Society. As a medical missionary in China, Cochrane lived through the dramatic political and social changes in the modern history of China and the world. As an English medical missionary, he witnessed and experienced the extreme poverty and severe shortage of medicine of the Chinese people when he was in Chaoyang, Liaoning Province, most inhabited by the Mongolian ethnic group. Then, he survive

Hypertension and orthostatic hypotension in applicants for spaceflight training and spacecrews: a review of medical standards.

The inauguration of NASA of the position of Payload Specialists for SHUTTLE-SPACELAB flights has broken the tradition of restrictive medical physical standards in several ways: by reducing physical requirements and extensive training; by permitting the selection of older individuals and women; by selecting individuals who may fly only one or several missions and do not spend an entire career in space activities. Experience with Payload Specialists to be gained during the forthcoming SPACELAB missions, observing man in spaceflight step by step on an incremental basis, will provide valuable data

Another view of "humanitarian ventures" and "fistula tourism".

There are many ethical issues involved in medical missions to developing countries. The Current Opinion/Update "Humanitarian ventures or 'fistula tourism?': the ethical perils of pelvic surgery in the developing world" raised many concerns about surgical trips to treat obstetric fistula. Despite a lack of experience with obstetric fistula, western surgeons may still bring surgical and public health techniques that may be of value to health systems in developing countries. Emphasis should be placed on program development and assessment first. This should include not only surgical training but a…

Ten Steps for a Successful Hand Surgery Mission Trip - Experiences from Supporting Paediatric Hand in Vietnam and Honduras.

Domestic and global access to surgical care for paediatric hand and upper limb conditions is challenged by limited resources, increasing direct and indirect costs of care and a growing number of patients who require specialty care. There are numerous barriers for patients from developing countries to receiving medical care in Japan due to the substantial costs, which include travel, uninsured medical expenses and fees imposed by intermediaries. To address this issue, I realised that I needed to take a more direct approach - by travelling to these countries, not only to provide treatment, but a

An Analysis of Essential Pediatric Surgical Cases Encountered During a Decade of Large-Scale Military Humanitarian Aid Missions.

INTRODUCTION: Disease Control Priorities, 3rd Edition (DCP3) is an evidence-based, published resource that outlines essential procedures recommended for developing health care systems. These systems must consider various populations and the incidence of certain surgical conditions that require treatment. In relation to pediatric patients, the prevalence of certain surgical conditions encountered remains unclear in several low- and middle-income countries. Over the past 15 years, the USNS Mercy, one of the U.S. Navy's large hospital ships, has led the Pacific Partnership missions, which provide

Globalization of Craniofacial Plastic Surgery: Foreign Mission Programs for Cleft Lip and Palate.

International Humanitarian Interchanges are a bona fide component of surgery and medicine. Additionally, these programs also provide substantial benefit both to the doers and the recipients. The foreign mission program is potentially a weapon of foreign policy which is underutilized and underestimated.Physician job dissatisfaction is increasing. However, the happiness and satisfaction of the participants in the short-term multidisciplinary trips, repeated, well-organized and respectful, with rather complete integration of the surgical system of the sister countries ("Plan B"), approaches 100%.T

[Franco-Mexican medical action and the Mexican Expedition (1864-1867)].

In the days when French expeditionary troops were fighting in Mexico, Napoleon the Third founded a "Mexican Scientific Committee" in the same wave length as his uncle, General Bonaparte in Egypt. The Committee was headquartered in Paris and since April 1864, a "Franco-Mexican Committee" took place at Mexico-City. The medical branch was led, in Paris, by the Baron Hippolyte Larrey and chaired on the spot by Dr Ehrmann; it will become the "Academia de Medicina de Mexico" and published the "Gaceta Medica". Numerous researchs were undertaken and most of them printed in the "Gaceta Medica" with som
