Blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) are very common, usually underdiagnosed and underappreciated diseases. More than 50% of patients seeking ophthalmologic consultations have symptoms and signs indicating one or both entities. We summarize the key points of diagnosis and management of both diseases, comparing the work of Dry Eye Workshop II (2017) with the dry eye blepharitis syndrome unification theory. The impact of MGD/blepharitis on ocular surgery also is described. Although MGD and blepharitis seem to be uncurable, most of the time they can be successfully controlled. Differ

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence is developing rapidly, bringing increasing numbers of intelligent products into daily life. However, it has little progress in dry eye, which is a common disease and associated with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Noninvasive infrared meibography, known as an effective diagnostic tool of MGD, allows for objective observation of meibomian glands. Thus, we discuss a deep learning method to measure and assess meibomian glands of meibography.
METHODS: We used Mask R-CNN deep learning (DL) framework. A total of 1878 meibography images were collected and manua

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and aqueous deficiency (AD) on friction-related disease (FRD).
METHODS: Cross-sectional comparative study. This study included 550 eyes (550 patients) with dry eye disease (DED). The DED subtype and dynamic tear-film parameters by automated assessments were investigated for the analysis of FRD (superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis, conjunctivochalasis, and lid wiper epitheliopathy).
RESULTS: Patients with FRD had a higher proportion of moderate-to-severe MGD and AD (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively). The dropout rate

Although the pathophysiology of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) remains incompletely understood, many treatment options have recently become available. According to an international workshop report, treatment selection for MGD should be based on a comprehensive stage classification dependent on ocular symptoms, lid margin abnormalities, meibum grade, and ocular surface staining. However, it is often difficult to evaluate all parameters required for such classification in routine clinical practice. We have now retrospectively evaluated therapeutic efficacy in MGD patients who received five ty

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a common cause of dry eye disease. Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment is a new and approved therapeutic option for MGD. The treatment consists of 2-4 sessions where light impulses are applied to the lower lid and temporal lid margin. The IPL technique is a safe form of treatment when the required safety precautions are followed. Current studies document an improvement of patients' subjective symptoms and objectively measured clinical parameters.

Dry eye disease is one of the most common ophthalmic complaints; it results from the activity of various pathways and is considered a multifactorial disease. An important factor that contributes to the onset of dry eye disease is meibomian gland dysfunction. Meibomian gland dysfunction causes a disruption in the tear film lipid layer which affects the rate of tear evaporation. This evaporation leads to tear hyperosmolarity, eventually triggering the onset of dry eye disease. Dry eye disease and meibomian gland dysfunction are strongly associated with each other, such that many of their risk fa

Background/Objectives: Dry eye (DE) can cause persistent eye rubbing, contributing to keratoconus (KC) development and progression. Both keratoconus (KC) and dry eye (DE) significantly impact patients' functional and emotional well-being, with KC patients exhibiting a higher prevalence of DE symptoms and signs. This study examined whether functional (KEPAQ-F) and emotional (KEPAQ-E) quality of life, assessed by the Keratoconus End-Points Assessment Questionnaire, differ when influenced by symptoms and clinical signs of general DE versus meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) in KC patients. Dry eye disease (DED) is an emerging global health concern with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) being the most common subtype of DED. Despite being quite prevalent, the pathophysiological mechanisms governing MGD are poorly understood. Animal models for MGD can be a valuable resource to advance our understanding of this entity and explore novel diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. Although a lot of literature on rodent MGD models exists, a comprehensive review on rabbit animal models is lacking. Rabbits offer a great advantage over other animals as models for studying both DED and MGD. Rab

We are reporting an interesting case of ichthyosis follicularis with alopecia and photophobia syndrome in a daughter and father from the Indian subcontinent associated with Meibomian gland dysfunction. A three-year-old female child presented with pain, redness and severe photophobia in both eyes since one month. Cutaneous examination revealed ichthyosis, absence of hair all over the body including eyebrows, scalp and angular cheilosis. Ocular examination revealed bilateral severe meibomianitis, multiple superficial punctate keratitides in right eye and corneal epithelial defect in the left eye

BACKGROUND: Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a chronic and widespread abnormality of the meibomian glands that often results in symptoms such as eye irritation and blurred vision, significantly affecting patients' daily activities. While conventional treatments like warm compresses and meibomian gland expression remain widely used, their limitations have driven the development of novel therapeutic technologies.
SUMMARY: This review synthesizes evidence from 71 clinical and experimental studies in Medline databases on both established and emerging therapeutic strategies for MGD, including
