Pars plana surgery was performed, using a vitreous infusion suction cutter, for the treatment of after-cataracts, traumatic pupillary membranes, inflammatory pupillary membranes, and varoius pupillary membranes combined with other posterior segment problems. Surgical complications were minimal. A permanent pupillary opening was achieved in all but one case. Visual success was dependent on the underlying disease. One should not operate during active phases of uveitis.

Membranes of dead fetuses showed a three-fold increase in permeability to the haemoglobin molecule when compared with normal and stored membranes. The friability of some of these membranes was markedly increased and their strength and elasticity diminished. These findings may be significant in the aetiology of the hypofibrinogenaemia and the increased incidence of amniotic fluid embolism with intrauterine death of the fetus.

Autoimmune bullous diseases (AIBD) comprise a group of organ-specific autoimmune diseases which are characterised by the production of autoantibodies against adhesion molecules and structural proteins of skin and mucosae. Depending on the target protein, AIBD are classified into intraepidermal (pemphigus group) and subepidermal (pemphigoid group, epidermolysis bullosa acquisita, dermatitis herpetiformis) blistering disorders.
