Long-term effects of bifrontal transcranial alternating current stimulation on verbal working memory and episodic memory in young healthy adults.

The current randomized controlled trial (RCT) examined both immediate and long-term effects of five consecutive bifrontal tACS sessions on verbal WM functioning in 30 healthy adult participants. WM performance and event-related quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) parameters (mean power of frontal theta oscillations during three different WM events) were noted at baseline, immediately after tACS intervention, and at four-week post intervention. In comparison to the sham-tACS group, WM performance in active tACS group was improved following a four-week post-intervention period across all

Working memory and long-term memory for faces: Evidence from fMRI and global amnesia for involvement of the medial temporal lobes.

Behavioral studies with amnesic patients and imaging studies with healthy adults have suggested that medial temporal lobe (MTL) structures known to be essential for long-term declarative memory (LTM) may also be involved in the maintenance of information in working memory (WM). To examine whether MTL structures are involved in WM maintenance for faces, and the nature of that involvement, WM and LTM for faces were examined in normal participants via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and in amnesic patients behaviorally. In Experiment 1, participants were scanned while performing a WM

Extracellular vesicles aid in the transfer of long-term associative memory between Caenorhabditis elegans.

Memory formation is necessary for the survival of animals across phyla. Here, we elucidate the mechanism underlying the formation of long-term associative memory (LTAM) formed by treating Caenorhabditis elegans with a volatile chemoattractant and heat. Previous work has shown that training animals with a paradigm involving heat and isoamyl alcohol (IAA) simultaneously, causes C. elegans to lose their attraction to IAA. In this study, we elaborate on the mechanism behind this LTAM formation and suggest that during training with heat and IAA, C. elegans release extracellular vesicles (EVs) that

Detecting Malicious Anomalies in Heavy-Duty Vehicular Networks Using Long Short-Term Memory Models.

Utilizing deep learning models to detect malicious anomalies within the traffic of application layer J1939 protocol networks, found on heavy-duty commercial vehicles, is becoming a critical area of research in platform protection. At the physical layer, the controller area network (CAN) bus is the backbone network for most vehicles. The CAN bus is highly efficient and dependable, which makes it a suitable networking solution for automobiles where reaction time and speed are of the essence due to safety considerations. Much recent research has been conducted on securing the CAN bus explicitly;

Long-Term Effects of Intensive Rehabilitation on Memory Functions in Acquired Brain-Damaged Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Memory difficulties after brain injury are a frequent and concerning outcome, affecting a wide range of daily activities, employment, and social reintegration. Despite the importance of functional memory capacities throughout life, most studies examined the short-term effects of memory interventions in brain-damaged patients who underwent a rehabilitation program. In the present study, we investigated the long-term outcomes and intensity of memory interventions in acquired (traumatic brain injury [TBI] and non-TBI) brain-damaged patients who participated in an intensive cognitive re

Entorhinal Cortex Functional Connectivity during Item Long-Term Memory and the Role of Sex.

A growing body of literature shows there are sex differences in the patterns of brain activity during long-term memory. However, there is a paucity of evidence on sex differences in functional brain connectivity. We previously identified sex differences in the patterns of connections with the hippocampus, a medial temporal lobe (MTL) subregion, during spatial long-term memory. The perirhinal/entorhinal cortex, another MTL subregion, plays a critical role in item memory. In the current functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, we investigated perirhinal/entorhinal functional connectiv

APOEε4, in-hospital delirium and long-term cognitive impairment: A longitudinal memory clinic study.

INTRODUCTION: Delirium is common among hospitalized elderly. Previous short-term studies reported inconsistent associations between APOEε4 allele, in-hospital delirium, and post-delirium cognitive impairment. We examined the association of APOEε4 allele with in-hospital delirium and long-term cognitive outcomes following delirium. METHODS: The electronic medical records were linked to the Korean National Health Insurance Service database of all citizens from January 2002 to July 2019. The study population consisted of 1057 memory clinic visitors with APOE genotype, longitudinal neuropsycholog

Monkeypox genome mutation analysis using a timeseries model based on long short-term memory.

Monkeypox is a double-stranded DNA virus with an envelope and is a member of the Poxviridae family's Orthopoxvirus genus. This virus can transmit from human to human through direct contact with respiratory secretions, infected animals and humans, or contaminated objects and causing mutations in the human body. In May 2022, several monkeypox affected cases were found in many countries. Because of its transmitting characteristics, on July 23, 2022, a nationwide public health emergency was proclaimed by WHO due to the monkeypox virus. This study analyzed the gene mutation rate that is collected f

cd1 Mutation in Drosophila Affects Phenoxazinone Synthase Catalytic Site and Impairs Long-Term Memory.

Being involved in development of Huntington's, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, kynurenine pathway (KP) of tryptophan metabolism plays a significant role in modulation of neuropathology. Accumulation of a prooxidant 3-hydroxykynurenine (3-HOK) leads to oxidative stress and neuronal cell apoptosis. Drosophila mutant cardinal (cd1) with 3-HOK excess shows age-dependent neurodegeneration and short-term memory impairments, thereby presenting a model for senile dementia. Although cd gene for phenoxazinone synthase (PHS) catalyzing 3-HOK dimerization has been presumed to harbor the cd1 mutation

Mapping Vagus Nerve Stimulation Parameters to Cardiac Physiology using Long Short-term Memory Network.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an emerging therapeutic strategy for pathological conditions in a variety of diseases; however, several challenges arise for applying this stimulation paradigm in automated closed-loop control. In this work, we propose a data driven approach for predicting the impact of VNS on physiological variables. We apply this approach on a synthetic dataset created with a physiological model of a rat heart. Through training several neural network models, we found that a long short term memory (LSTM) architecture gave the best performance on a test set. Further, we found t

Decoding Movements from Cortical Ensemble Activity Using a Long Short-Term Memory Recurrent Network.

Although many real-time neural decoding algorithms have been proposed for brain-machine interface (BMI) applications over the years, an optimal, consensual approach remains elusive. Recent advances in deep learning algorithms provide new opportunities for improving the design of BMI decoders, including the use of recurrent artificial neural networks to decode neuronal ensemble activity in real time. Here, we developed a long-short term memory (LSTM) decoder for extracting movement kinematics from the activity of large (N = 134-402) populations of neurons, sampled simultaneously from multiple c

Impairment of recognition memory and hippocampal long-term potentiation after acute exposure to clioquinol.

Clioquinol (CQ) was associated with cases of transient global amnesia and with the neurodegenerative syndrome subacute myelo-optico-neuropathy (SMON) in humans. However, CQ forms lipophilic chelates with cations and has the potential as a scientific and clinical tool used for selective modulation of histochemically reactive zinc pools. The relationship among transient lack of synaptic zinc release, hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP) induction and cognitive memory is poorly understood. To evaluate the role of synaptic zinc release, in the present study, hippocampal LTP induction and cogni

Dissociation of long-term verbal memory and fronto-executive impairment in first-episode psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Verbal memory is frequently and severely affected in schizophrenia and has been implicated as a mediator of poor clinical outcome. Whereas encoding deficits are well demonstrated, it is unclear whether retention is impaired. This distinction is important because accelerated forgetting implies impaired consolidation attributable to medial temporal lobe (MTL) dysfunction whereas impaired encoding and retrieval implicates involvement of prefrontal cortex. METHOD: We assessed a group of healthy volunteers (n=97) and pre-morbid IQ- and sex-matched first-episode psychosis patients (n=97

4E-BP2-dependent translational control in GABAergic interneurons is required for long-term memory.

mRNA translational repression by eukaryotic initiation factor 4E-binding proteins (4E-BPs), plays a critical role in synaptic plasticity and the formation of long-term memory (LTM). Among the three 4E-BP paralogs, 4E-BP2 is the predominant form expressed in neurons, and its full-body deletion in mice causes memory deficits. Mice lacking 4E-BP2 in GABAergic inhibitory interneurons, but not excitatory neurons, display autistic-like behaviors and deficits in object location and recognition. The specific mRNAs translationally regulated by 4E-BP2 in GABAergic interneurons, and how they contribute t

Calycosin improved long-term memory impairment in the very early of APP/PS1 mice.

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive syndrome characterized by cognitive dysfunction, with neuroinflammation and β-amyloid plaque deposition representing early pathological hallmarks. Activated microglia and astrocytes play pivotal roles in neuroinflammation, further exacerbating the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Calycosin, an active ingredient derived from radix astragali, binds to estrogen receptors to elicit estrogen-like effects and has demonstrated efficacy in alleviating cognitive impairment. However, the impact of calycosin on memory deficits and its underlying mechanisms in the v

Energy Expenditure Prediction from Accelerometry Data Using Long Short-Term Memory Recurrent Neural Networks.

The accurate estimation of energy expenditure from simple objective accelerometry measurements provides a valuable method for investigating the effect of physical activity (PA) interventions or population surveillance. Methods have been evaluated previously, but none utilize the temporal aspects of the accelerometry data. In this study, we investigated the energy expenditure prediction from acceleration measured at the subjects' hip, wrist, thigh, and back using recurrent neural networks utilizing temporal elements of the data. The acceleration was measured in children (N = 33) performing a st

Antibody-mediated immunological memory correlates with long-term Lyme veterinary vaccine protection in mice.

Lyme disease, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, is the most common tick-borne illness in the United States. Despite the rise in Lyme disease incidence, there is no vaccine against B. burgdorferi approved for human use. Little is known about the immune correlates of protection needed to prevent Lyme disease. In this work, a mouse model was used to characterize the immune response and compare the protection provided by two USDA-approved vaccines for use in canines: Duramune (bacterin vaccine) and Vanguard crLyme (subunit vaccine composed of two outer surface proteins, OspA and OspC).

Prediction of dengue cases using the attention-based long short-term memory (LSTM) approach.

This research proposes a 'temporal attention' addition for long-short term memory (LSTM) models for dengue prediction. The number of monthly dengue cases was collected for each of five Malaysian states i.e. Selangor, Kelantan, Johor, Pulau Pinang, and Melaka from 2011 to 2016. Climatic, demographic, geographic and temporal attributes were used as covariates. The proposed LSTM models with temporal attention was compared with several benchmark models including a linear support vector machine (LSVM), a radial basis function support vector machine (RBFSVM), a decision tree (DT), a shallow neural n
