Systematic Review of the Effectiveness and Experiences of Treatment for Men With Borderline Personality Disorder.

In clinical settings, among individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD), typically 75% are female and 25% male, although this discrepancy is not reported in the community. In the literature, little is known of the effectiveness and experiences of treatment of men with BPD. We aimed to review the effectiveness and experiences of treatment for men with BPD and outline future research priorities to promote better recovery. We searched Ovid MEDLINE and PsycINFO for eligible studies from inception until July 29, 2022. Peer-reviewed primary research articles on treatment effecti

[Diagnosis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy for personality disordered persons].

The author uses PubMed searches on clinical studies on personality disorders and finds that the borderline personality disorder is most extensively researched. Mary Zanarini summeries there are four kinds of psychotherapies that are proved to be effective in the treatment of BPD patients, including mentalization based treatment, transference focused therapy, dialectic behavior therapy and schema focused therapy. They are all effective to improve the severity of impulsivity and self-destructiveness. The author then reviews McGlashan's series of extensive follow-up studies on BPD and other menta

The Outside of Psychotherapy-The Socioecological Approach to Treating Severe Personality Pathology in a Young Patient.

The socioecological treatment approach is rooted in fundamental principles of mentalization-based therapy (MBT) and evolutionary theory. Rather than focusing solely on the individual, this approach broadens the perspective to include the patient's wider social network in understanding and treating mental health disorders such as personality pathology. A core premise of this approach is that problems and their solutions should not be viewed in isolation but identified in close collaboration with the patient's environment. The socioecological approach integrates treatment network meetings, invol…

[Current perspectives in electroconvulsive therapy].

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) originally stems from the concept of Meduna at the beginning of the 1930s who utilized repeated generalized seizures as a therapeutic agent for schizophrenic disorders. The method has continuously evolved in technical and nontechnical aspects. The ECT could consistently overcome numerous adversities. It has recently been integrated into various guidelines and position papers for severe mental illnesses. The German Institute for Medical Documentation and Information (DIMDI) has established the term Elektrokonvulsionstherapie in Germany to replace older stigmatizi

General Psychiatric Management for Adolescents With Borderline Personality Disorder and Eating Disorders.

Borderline personality disorder and eating disorders frequently co-occur among youths. These disorders emerge in adolescence, during the critical developmental period of building an independent sense of self and the capacity to relate to one's community. Because of core differences in the development and psychopathology of borderline personality disorder and eating disorders, adjustments are required when treating these disorders when they co-occur. Few established treatment approaches can address these disorders simultaneously. Evidence-based psychotherapies for borderline personality disorde

Art therapy in addiction recovery the face of addiction through artworks based on clinical case studies.

Given the multifaceted nature of addiction, a multidisciplinary and comprehensive therapeutic approach is essential. Art therapy has therefore become an important complementary intervention in both inpatient and outpatient treatment settings. Numerous studies support its applicability and effectiveness among individuals with addiction. Art therapy can be particularly beneficial in reducing pervasive feelings of shame and anxiety, as well as in facilitating the processing of traumatic experiences - phenomena that are common among people with substance use disorder (SUD) and are often difficult

[On the Admission of Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder to Outpatient Psychotherapy].

BACKGROUND: Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) present difficulties in self-regulation and interaction, which is a challenge for psychotherapists that is also addressed in BPD-specific interventions. Against this background, outpatient psychotherapists were surveyed about the factors playing a decisive role in their treatment offer for patients with BPD. METHODS: Psychotherapists for adults were contacted via their email address published on the website of the Kassenärztliche Vereinigung (Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians), 231 of whom answered an online qu

Technological Innovations in the Evidence-Based Treatment of Anxiety Disorders.

Anxiety disorders can emerge across the lifespan, causing significant distress and impairment. Although evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy exist for anxiety disorders, several challenges exist when implementing these treatments in clinical practice that can impede treatment accessibility and/or effectiveness. Fortunately, several technological advancements have resulted in considerable innovative solutions. Here, we examine the evidence for augmenting evidence-based treatments for anxiety disorders using: (1) telehealth/telemedicine; (2) digital mental health intervent

Evidence-based psychological interventions and athletes' mental health: A perspective from Central and Eastern Europe.

This perspective provides a concise overview of the authors' viewpoint on evidence-based interventions for supporting athletes' mental health in Central and Eastern Europe. First, the specifics of these interventions are presented, along with the assumptions and mechanisms relating to changes in athletes' habitual inappropriate behaviour and thinking patterns, and the teaching of skills necessary for healthy functioning. Four prominent therapeutic approaches that incorporate cognitive behavioural principles in sport are then distinguished: acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical b

[Electroconvulsive therapy in people with intellectual disability].

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a highly effective treatment option for severe mental illness. Although people with intellectual disability (ID) have similar prevalence rates of mental disorders in comparison to the general population their access to ECT remains challenging. A systematic literature review was carried out on treatment with ECT in patients with ID and a case report on a patient with ID who underwent ECT is presented, to highlight a typical clinical routine. A total of 100 articles with 208 different case reports were retrieved. In summary, the results underline the effectiven

The role of music therapy in Australian mental health services and the need for increased access to service users.

OBJECTIVES: This opinion paper aims to provide an overview of the current evidence base supporting the use of music therapy in mental health care. It also aims to offer critique on the issue of access to music therapy in Australia. CONCLUSIONS: There is a strong evidence base for music therapy to provide symptomatic relief and improve quality of life for people living with mental illness. However, music therapy is underfunded and framed as a supplementary service within mental health services in Australia, which limits its access to consumers. Funding music therapy as an evidence-based treatm

Stem cells and their potential clinical applications in psychiatric disorders.

The robustness of stem cells is one of the major factors that directly impacts life quality and life span. Evidence has accumulated that changes in the stem cell compartment affect human mental health and serve as an indicator of psychiatric problems. It is well known that stem cells continuously replace differentiated cells and tissues that are used up during life, although this replacement occurs at a different pace in the various organs. However, the participation of local neural stem cells in regeneration of the central nervous system is controversial. It is known that low numbers of stem

The use of borderline personality disorder severity index-iv feedback in adjusting borderline personality disorder treatment: therapists and patients perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has emphasized the importance of therapists giving Routine Outcome Monitoring (ROM) feedback to their patients. It has been shown that several factors influence therapists' tendency to provide ROM feedback to their patients. METHODS: In this qualitative study, using a semi-structured interview followed by thematic analysis using Atlas.ti, we focused on experiences of therapists and patients with a disorder specific ROM instrument: the Borderline Personality Disorder Severity Index-IV (BPDSI-IV).
