Privately practicing physicians, mainly family practitioners, were found in 1966 to prescribe psychoactive drugs somewhat differently from various types of outpatient clinic. Differences could be accounted for in part by differences in clientele, which are described. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of a 51-year-old man with cognitive impairment and tremor who developed worsening tremor, anxiety, myoclonus, ataxia, and psychosis on abrupt cessation of carisoprodol. At hospital discharge, his cognitive function significantly improved compared with when he was on carisoprodol.

Four phenylpiperazine derivatives exhibited an activity similar to benzodiazepines and meprobamate in the 4-plate test. One of these (compound IV) demonstrated anxiolytic like activity in a step-down avoidance technique, in electroshock induced aggression and in the staircase test. Hemoperfusion was performed on 58 occasions to treat 48 patients with severe intoxication, of which 23 had taken on overdose of barbiturate or meprobamate. With one exception they all showed remarkable improvement during the treatment. The dried extracts of aerial parts of Cynodon dactylon Pers. (Graminae) were evaluated for CNS activities in mice. The tendency among researchers and clinicians to view alcoholism from a single-substance abuse perspective is questioned, and studies are cited that document multiple-substance abuse patterns among this clinical group.
