Liver and muscle tissue of tusks ( Brosme brosme) have been analyzed for their THg and MeHg concentrations and Hg isotopic signatures for tracing Hg pollution along the Norwegian coast. Clear differences between tissue types and locations were established. At five of the eight locations, the Hg concentration in muscle exceeded the maximum allowable level of 0.5 mg kg-1 wet weight. δ202Hg values in both tissue types indicated that Hg speciation affects the bulk Hg isotopic signature. Tusk liver seems to be more sensitive to immediate changes and to anthropogenic inorganic Hg, while the muscle r

The aim of this work is to compare simultaneous isotope dilution analysis of organotin and organomercury compounds by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (GC-ICP/MS) on certified bivalve samples. These samples were extracted by microwave with tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH). Derivatization with both NaBEt4 and NaBPr4 was evaluated, and analytical performances were compared. Two CRM materials, BCR-710 and CRM-477, were analyzed by both techniques to verify accuracy. A mixed spike containing (201)Hg-enriched methyl

BACKGROUND: Mercury (Hg), especially methylmercury (MeHg) as a most toxic format of Hg in the environment, has been paid widely concern due to its high bioaccumulative capability and great risk to humans. Great efforts have been made to develop ethylation-purge and trap-gas chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry system for MeHg analysis and Hg biogeochemical cycling investigation. However, the generally manual operation limits the analytical efficiency, and the lack of applications in the real environmental samples restricts the future study. There is a great need for a ra

We report the first common methodology for the simultaneous determination of methylmercury (MeHg), ethylmercury (EtHg), and inorganic mercury (Hg(II)) in human blood hair and urine. With the exception of the initial sample mass (0.15 g for blood, 0.5 g for urine, and 0.1 g for hair), the same sample preparation and gas chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (GC-ICPMS) measurement conditions are employed for the three matrixes providing experimental values in agreement with the certified values in the analysis of NIST SRM 955c (Caprine Blood) Level 3 and the certified human

A field-adapted procedure based on species-specific isotope dilution (SSID) methodology for trace-level determinations of methyl mercury (CH(3)Hg(+)) in mire, fresh and sea water samples was developed, validated and applied in a field study. In the field study, mire water samples were filtered, standardised volumetrically with isotopically enriched CH(3) (200)Hg(+), and frozen on dry ice. The samples were derivatised in the laboratory without further pre-treatment using sodium tetraethyl borate (NaB(C(2)H(5))(4)) and the ethylated methyl mercury was purge-trapped on Tenax columns. The analyte

Many procedures have been developed to measure the concentration of monomethylmercury (MeHg) from different sample matrices, and the use of stable isotopes of mercury now provides opportunities to determine its formation and degradation rates. Here, a modified procedure for measuring mercury isotopes in sediment samples that uses acid leaching-ion exchange-thiosulfate extraction (TSE) to isolate and purify the methylated mercury from the matrix is proposed. The latter is followed by aqueous-phase ethylation, purge and trap on Tenax, gas chromatography separation of ethylated mercury compounds,…

This study characterized the transport pathways and sources of mercury in downstream food webs of the Athabasca River Basin in northern Alberta, Canada. Flowing through a large boreal watershed in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region, the river drains into the ecologically-sensitive Peace-Athabasca Delta and western Lake Athabasca. Mercury stable isotope measurements on abiotic and biotic matrices were combined with spatial and temporal sampling to evaluate the importance of the Athabasca River as a conduit for mercury. Mixing model estimates derived from mercury isotopes indicated the Athabasca Riv…

Concentrations and loads of total mercury and methylmercury were measured in streams draining abandoned mercury mines and in the proximity of geothermal discharge in the Cache Creek watershed of California during a 17-month period from January 2000 through May 2001. Rainfall and runoff were lower than long-term averages during the study period. The greatest loading of mercury and methylmercury from upstream sources to downstream receiving waters, such as San Francisco Bay, generally occurred during or after winter rainfall events. During the study period, loads of mercury and methylmercury fro

Reliable species-specific isotope ratio analysis of methylmercury (MMHg), the most toxic form of mercury, is essential for advancing our understanding of mercury sources, transformations, and biogeochemical cycling. Existing methods are time-consuming, often require preconcentration, and are restricted to samples with high concentrations of MMHg. Here we present a fast and straightforward distillation-based extraction method for sediments, that is applicable to samples with low-levels of MMHg, without imparting any fractionation. The method can process up to 5 g of sediment, making it applicab

Mercury bioaccumulation is frequently observed in marine ecosystems, often with stronger effects at higher trophic levels. We compared total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) from muscle with length, comparative isotopic niche, and diet (via δ13C and δ15N) among four sympatric coastal sharks in Florida Bay (USA): blacknose, blacktip, bull, and lemon. Mercury in blacknose and blacktip sharks increased significantly with size, whereas bull and lemon sharks had a high variance in mercury relative to size. Both δ13C and δ15N were consistent with general resource use and trophic position relat

Limited information exists on mercury concentrations and environmental drivers of mercury bioaccumulation in high latitude terrestrial carnivores. Spatial patterns of mercury concentrations in wolverine (Gulo gulo, n = 419) were assessed across a 1,600,000 km2 study area in relation to landscape, climate, diet and biological factors in Arctic and boreal biomes of western Canada. Hydrogen stable isotope ratios were measured in wolverine hair from a subset of 80 animals to assess the spatial scale for characterizing environmental conditions of their habitat. Habitat characteristics were determin

In this study we evaluated a method for the characterization of complexes, formed in different relative ratios of mercury(II) to dicysteinyl tetrapeptide, by electrospray ionization orbitrap mass spectrometry. This strategy is based on previous successful characterization of mercury-dicysteinyl complexes involving tripeptides by utilizing mass spectrometry among other techniques. Mercury(II) chloride and a dicysteinyl tetrapeptide were incubated in a degassed buffered medium at varying stoichiometric ratios. The complexes formed were subsequently analyzed on an electrospray mass spectrometer c

Sediments and biota samples were collected in a restricted area of the Lagoon of Venice and analysed for total mercury, monomethyl mercury (MMHg), and nitrogen and carbon isotopes. Results were used to examine mercury biomagnification in a complex food chain. Sedimentary organic matter (SOM) proved to be a major source of nutrients and mercury to primary consumers. Contrary to inorganic mercury, MMHg was strongly biomagnified along the food chain, although the lognormal relationship between MMHg and δ(15)N was less constrained than generally reported from lakes or coastal marine ecosystems. A rapid, accurate, sensitive, and simple method for simultaneous speciation analysis of mercury and tin in biological samples has been developed. Integrated simultaneous sample preparation for tin and mercury species includes open focused microwave extraction and derivatization via ethylation. Capillary gas chromatography-inductively plasma mass spectrometry (CGC-ICPMS) conditions and parameters affecting the analytical performance were carefully optimized both for species-specific isotope dilution analysis of MMHg and TBT and for conventional analysis of MBT and DBT201Hg-enriched monomethylme

Quantifying mercury (Hg) concentrations in invertebrates is fundamental to determining risk for bioaccumulation in higher trophic level organisms in coastal food webs. Bioaccumulation is influenced by local mercury concentrations, site geochemistry, individual feeding ecologies, and trophic position. We sampled seven species of invertebrates from five coastal sites in the Minas Basin, Bay of Fundy, and determined body concentrations of methylmercury (MeHg), total mercury (THg), and stable isotopes of nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C). To evaluate the effects of environmental chemistry on Hg pr

Deep ocean foraging northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) consume fish and squid in remote depths of the North Pacific Ocean. Contaminants bioaccumulated from prey are subsequently transferred by adult females to pups during gestation and lactation, linking pups to mercury contamination in mesopelagic food webs (200-1000 m depths). Maternal transfer of mercury to developing seal pups was related to maternal mercury contamination and was strongly correlated with maternal foraging behavior (biotelemetry and isotopes). Mercury concentrations in lanugo (hair grown in utero) were among

Within areas of comparable atmospheric mercury deposition rates methylmercury burden in largemouth bass populations vary significantly between regulated and unregulated rivers. To investigate if trophic dynamics strongly influenced pollutant body load, we sampled largemouth bass from two adjacent rivers, one regulated and one unregulated, and applied a suite of biochemical and stable isotope assays to compare their trophic dynamics. Total mercury burden in the bass from the unregulated Sipsey River (Elrod, AL, USA) and the regulated Black Warrior River (Demopolis, AL, USA) averaged 0.87 mg kg-
