Case report: volvulus of a mesenteric cyst--an unusual complication diagnosed by CT.

A 10-year-old girl presented with colicky abdominal pain and a vague left sided mass on physical examination. Plain radiographs of the abdomen were unremarkable but ultrasound examination demonstrated a large right sided unilocular cystic abdominal mass. Computed tomographic features were diagnostic of volvulus of the proximal small bowel with associated mesenteric cyst. Surgery confirmed CT findings and no mid gut malrotation was noted at operation.

A Huge Mesenteric Chylous Cyst, Presenting as Abdominal Mass: A Rare Case Report.

Mesenteric cysts are rare abdominal lesions. A mesenteric chylous cyst is a very rare type of mesenteric cyst that may occur anywhere through the bowel, from the duodenum to the rectum. The etiology of mesenteric cysts is unknown and several theories have been suggested for forming these cysts. A mesenteric cyst is mostly found incidentally during investigations for another pathology. The treatment of choice for mesenteric chylous cysts in symptomatic patients is complete excision (enucleation) by either laparoscopic or open technique. The prognosis of a completely excised mesenteric cyst is g…

Amyand's hernia associated with mesenteric chylous cyst in infant: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Amyand's hernia is a rare condition approximately 0.4-0.6% of all inguinal hernias. Although rare, the Amyand's hernia is worthy of discussion since the variable presentation that make clinical challenge to diagnose especially in infant. A mesenteric chylous cyst is rare disease and has not been reported in Amyand's hernia. CASE PRESENTATION: We report an unusual case of Type II Amyand's hernia with an enlarging chylous mesenteric cyst on the retrocaecal in the anulus into canalis inguinalis. A-2-months old infant presented with enlarging mass in the right scrotal. During laparoto…

Giant Mesenteric Cyst and Right Sided Syndrome in a 15-Year-Old Boy.

Giant mesenteric cyst is a rare benign abdominal tumor. It usually arises from the mesenteric side of the small bowel. Right side syndrome is the term used for congenital absence of right kidney and right testis. We report on a 15-year-old male who presented with progressive abdominal distension, early satiety, and difficulty walking or running. Abdominal ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) revealed a giant mesenteric cyst, absence of the right kidney, and left moderate hydronephrosis. After excision of the cyst, the patient was fully recovered. Our report shows that both conditions may oc…

Mesenteric cysts and mesenteric venous thrombosis leading to intestinal necrosis in pregnancy managed with laparotomy: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric cyst is a rare clinical entity especially in pregnancy; therefore, few cases have been reported in the literature. The standard method of their treatment is surgical excision either with laparotomy or laparoscopy. In addition, mesenteric vein thrombosis is a rare and life-threatening condition in pregnancy and needs immediate treatment because it can lead to intestinal necrotic ischemia. This is the first report of the coexistence of mesenteric cysts and mesenteric vein thrombosis during gestation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old Greek woman, gravida 2 para 1, presente…

Mesenteric Cyst in a 17-Month-Old Child: A Report of a Rare Case.

Mesenteric cyst is a rare benign cystic lesion of childhood that has a range of presentations varying from asymptomatic to acute abdomen. Hence, it is often an incidental finding or missed in diagnosis. Very few cases with complications have been reported. The underlying etiology still remains unknown despite multiple theories. Definitive diagnosis requires histopathological confirmation. We present a case of a 17-month-old girl with a large symptomatic hemorrhagic cyst who underwent complete excision of the cyst.

Mesenteric cysts associated with recurrent small-bowel volvulus: cause or effect?

Recurrent small-bowel volvulus is a state of recurrent intermittent or long-standing persistent twisting of small-bowel loops around its mesentery. The association of mesenteric cysts with recurrent small-bowel volvulus as the cause or effect is a much debated issue in the literature. We report two cases of mesenteric lymphangioma and one case of enteric duplication cyst seen in association with recurrent small-bowel volvulus of long duration in absence of malrotation.

Total excision of mesenteric cysts by laparoscopic surgery: report of two cases.

Mesenteric cysts are relatively rare tumors, and most patients present nonspecific abdominal symptoms until developing larger cysts. We report two cases of mesenteric cysts that were totally excised during laparoscopic surgery. The cysts of both patients were located in the mesenterium of the cecum or ascending colon. Under laparoscopy, the cyst was punctured to collect the cystic fluid for cytology and then completely removed without bowel resection. Histological examination revealed cystic lymphangiomas with endothelial cell lining. The postoperative course was uneventful. Laparoscopic treat…

Laparoscopic removal of a mesenteric cyst together with the calculous gallbladder: a case report.

The incidence of mesenteric cysts is relatively uncommon. Sprague" examined its frequency and noted that five large hospitals located in the LosnAngeles area averaged one documented case of mesenteric cyst per 100,000 hospital admissions. The most common location appears to be the mesentery of the small bowel, especially that of the ileum. Cysts of the mesentery of the large bowel are somewhat less fre- quent, accounting for approximately 38% of the total incidence. Those involving the large bowel most commonly involve the mesentery of the sigmoid colon.

Giant mesenteric cyst from the small bowel mesentery in a young adult patient.

Mesenteric cysts are rare tumors, they can emerge from any part of the mesentery of the bowel from the duodenum to the rectum. Their symptomatology can mimic almost any abdominal disease making diagnosis troublesome. In some circumstances, these cysts can grow to considerable sizes making resection almost impossible since its size can compromise different structures. Surgery is the treatment of choice as complete resection is the only curative treatment. We present a case of a female patient, she suffered from recurrent episodes of abdominal pain mistaken as gastritis. After a profound evaluat…

Strangulated umbilical hernia including a mesenteric cyst: a rare cause of acute abdomen.

Mesenteric cysts are rare intra-abdominal lesions. They are usually diagnosed as an incidental laparotomy finding in adults but in childhood, they may present with acute abdomen. In this report, a 72-year old female was referred to our hospital, suffering from acute abdominal pain, several episodes of nausea and vomiting. Clinical abdominal examination revealed an irreducible recurrent umbilical hernia. The patient had both muscular defense and abdominal tenderness. Plain abdominal radiography showed multiple air-fluid levels. With these findings, a diagnosis of acute abdominal pathology was a…

A Rare Case of Calcified Simple Mesenteric Cyst in a 70-Year-Old Woman.

Mesenteric cysts are one of the rare causes of intra-abdominal masses. They account for 1 in 100,000 cases in adults and 1 in 20,000 cases in children. Mesenteric cysts are commonly found in the small intestine, up to 60% of cases, and occasionally in the colon. The clinical presentation of patients with mesenteric cysts is so variable and nonspecific. It ranges from being asymptomatic to features of acute abdomen very rarely. Surgery is the treatment of choice. Complete excision with negative margins plays a curative role in avoiding the risk of recurrence as well. Here, we present the case o…

Conservative Management of an Enterocutaneous Fistula Following Sigmoid Mesenteric Cyst Excision: A Case Report.

We present the case of a 64-year-old woman who developed a postoperative small bowel-cutaneous enterocutaneous fistula (ECF) following excision of a large sigmoid mesenteric duplication cyst. Mesenteric duplication cysts are rare congenital anomalies, most frequently arising in the ileum, with sigmoid involvement being exceptionally uncommon in adults. They may present with abdominal pain, mass effect, or be discovered incidentally, and complete surgical excision is the treatment of choice. However, postoperative complications such as ECF formation are uncommon and can be challenging to manage

Chylous mesenteric cyst in children -A case report in a 4-year-old boy.

Chylous mesenteric cyst is a very rare case, with some vague clinical findings, and it is hard to establish the diagnosis before surgery. The most common complaints post-surgery are abdominal pain and abdominal distention. We report a case of chylous mesenteric cyst in a 4-year-old boy with chief complaint of a lump in the abdomen. Preoperative abdominal ultrasound study could not identify the origin of the mass, and suspected it as a tuberculous peritonitis. A repeat ultrasound examination revealed a multicystic mass, suspected as lymphangioma. From the exploratory laparotomy, we noted a gian…

Obliterated, fibrous omphalo-mesenteric duct in an adult without Meckel's diverticulum or vitelline cyst.

Vitello-intestinal [omphalo-mesenteric duct (OMD)] connects the developing mid-gut to the primitive yolk sac, provides nutrition to the embryo and remains patent and connected to the intestines until the fifth to ninth week of gestational period. Varied remnants of the vitello-intestinal duct have been reported. The present case-report describes a completely obliterated fibrous remnant of the duct. The remnant presented as a thick cord extending from the umbilicus towards the terminal part of the ileum and beyond. The terminal part of the cord showed a few ramifications that ended in the mesen

Acute abdomen caused by an infected mesenteric cyst in the ascending colon: a case report.

Mesenteric cysts are rare intra-abdominal tumors. Mesenteric cysts are usually asymptomatic and are incidentally detected during physical or radiological examination. Although uncommon, complications such as infection, bleeding, torsion, rupture and intestinal obstruction cause an acute abdomen. Spontaneous infection is a very rare complication. We present a case of infected mesenteric cysts in the ascending colon, which caused an acute abdomen. A 26-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with acute abdominal pain. She had a painful mass in the right abdomen on physical examination. Abdom…
