A 14-year-old girl was hospitalized with fever, jaundice, vomiting and right sided abdominal pain. A laparotomy was performed because of muscular defence and ascites. There was a mass of enlarged red and blue colored lymph nodes in the mesentery of the lower ileum loop. The histologic diagnosis of HNL without granulocytic infiltration was made. A septic-toxic shock developed after surgery. Respiratory insufficiency necessitated the use of a respirator, and acute renal failure with oliguria made hemodialysis necessary. The dramatic clinical course of the illness and the localization of the affe

Clinical information was available for 32 of 33 New World primates with fatal toxoplasmosis, all of which were subjected to a variable numbe … rtem findings were pulmonary congestion (78.8%), pulmonary oedema (75.8%), splenomegaly (57.6%) and mesenteric lymphadenitis (54.6%). The most common histopathological findings were multifocal necrotic hepatitis (97%), lymphadenitis (95.4%), interstitial pneumonia (90.3%) and necrotic splenitis (71.4%). The gross post-mortem changes in cebids were more variable than those …

Cryptococcal infection is a rare, yet well recognized complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We present a case of mesenteric and retroperitoneal cryptococcal lymphadenitis resulting in the obstruction of the stomach and proximal duodenum in a patient suffering from SLE, while recently she did not receive any immunosuppressive treatment. A 42-yr-old woman was admitted due to high fever and diffuse abdominal pain for three weeks. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan showed multiple conglomerated lymphadenopathies in the retroperitoneum and the mesentery resulting in luminal narro

Lymphadenopathy along with various systemic manifestations is commonly encountered in pediatric patients, tuberculosis being the commonest etiology. Occasional patients may present a diagnostic conundrum. Here, the authors report an unusual manifestation of Kimura disease (KD) presenting as nephrotic syndrome associated with mesenteric lymphadenitis in an 11-year-old male child. KD is a chronic inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology. It typically affects young adult males in the age range of 27-40 years and usually presents as painless itchy nodular masses in the head and neck region. The i…

The frequency of admission for acute terminal ileitis, Crohn's disease, and acute mesenteric lymphadenitis has been compared from the years 1951 to 1970, and the long-term results of operation for acute terminal ileitis in 1951-1965 have been examined. Whereas the admission rates for both acute terminal ileitis and Crohn's disease rose during the review period, that for acute lymphadenitis tended to fall slightly. Sixty-eight of 72 patients operated upon by appendicectomy who had acute terminal ileitis were followed up. One of these, with small intestinal stenosis at the initial operation, pro…

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis is a Gram-negative bacterium causing infection in humans through contaminated water and/or food. The infection commonly occurs as gastroenteritis and fever, abdominal pain due to mesenteric lymphadenitis and diarrhoea. Bacteraemia is rare and is typically seen in immunocompromised patients and occurs with different clinical presentations like Far East scarlet-like fever, splenic abscess, or mimic appendicitis. This is a case report of Y. pseudotuberculosis bacteraemia and splenic abscess in a Caucasian male.

We report the gross and microscopic findings and molecular identification of 2 cases of hyphate fungal infection in cetaceans from Brazil. The first case involved an adult male Atlantic spotted dolphin Stenella frontalis with localized pulmonary disease characterized by pyogranulomatous and necrotizing bronchopneumonia with intralesional hyphae. The second case involved an adult male Bryde's whale Balaenoptera edeni with orchitis, periorchitis, mesenteric lymphadenitis and pyogranulomatous bronchopneumonia with intralesional hyphae. PCR analysis from the dolphin's lung yielded Aspergillus fumi…

The authors report the case of a 22 year old woman with a recognized pulmonary sarcoidosis with disorders of the alveolo-capillary diffusion, admitted to hospital for feverish diarrhea. The discovery of right colic radiological lesions with no obvious origin, led to an exploring laparotomy which revealed large mesocolic and mesenteric adenopathies: histologically they were granulomatous lesions, of epithelioid and giant cells, tending to sclerosis. Colic and ileal mucosae were normal. From this observation the authors analyze the difficulties in diagnosing granulomatoses of the intestine and m

A histological examination of a biopsy from a firm submandibular mass in a seven-year-old domestic short-haired cat revealed a granulomatous lymphadenitis associated with the presence of small numbers of acid-fast bacilli. The cat was euthanased and subjected to a detailed post mortem examination which revealed extensive granulomatous inflammation in the right and left bronchial, para-aortic, mesenteric and colic lymph nodes, with small or early lesions in the lung and Peyer's patches of the ileum. Mycobacteria were isolated from the submandibular, mesenteric and cervical lymph nodes. The baci

Lymphadenopathy is a very common finding during the course of Whipple's disease (W.D.). Abdominal (mesenteric and retroperitoneal) tumoral lymphnodes may mimick malignant neoplasm, specially a lymphoma. The authors report the case of a patient who had an abdominal computer-assisted tomography (C.T.) at the diagnosis and during an eleven month survey for W.D. General C.T. findings can help to differenciate mesenteric lymphadenopathy in W.D. from those found in malignant lymphomas: low density (10-20 Hounsfield Units) because of the high fatty charge of Whipple's lymphnodes, lymphadenopathy in t

The cases of 2 siblings with cat scratch disease are described who presented with symptoms suggestive of acute febrile gastroenteritis. The first patient, a 7.5-y-old girl, developed mesenteric lymphadenitis, hepatosplenic granulomas and osteolytic bone lesions only late in the course of her protracted illness. Her 3-y-old brother had a shorter, self-limited illness without complications. Cat scratch disease is often unrecognized and the full spectrum of its clinical manifestations remains to be investigated.

INTRODUCTION: Lymphadenopathy is found in about 65% of patients with adult-onset Still's disease and is histologically characterized by an intense, paracortical immunoblastic hyperplasia. Adult-onset Still's disease has not been previously described as an etiology of suppurative necrotizing granulomatous lymphadenitis.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 27-year-old Greek man who manifested prolonged fever, abdominal pain, increased inflammatory markers, episodic skin rash and mesenteric lymphadenopathy histologically characterized by necrotizing granulomatous adenitis with central suppuration.

Histopatholgical findings in 242 lymph node biopsies received in Jos University Teaching Hospital over a 10-year period (1988-1997) were reviewed. Tuberculosis is the most predominant lesion (33.05%), followed closely by the non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (31.4%). Burkitt's lymphoma accounting for one-quarter of all the cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma had a peak age range of 8-10 years. Hodgkin's lymphoma, chronic non-specific lymphadenitis, sinus histiocytosis, reactive hyperplasia, metastatic carcinoma, dermatopathic lymphadenitis, Kaposis sarcoma and sarcoidosis accounted for 2.9%, 14.46%, 9.9%, 4.
