The present study aimed to explore the role of dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs in Eating Disorders (EDs) and their potential associations with core and comorbid symptoms. The Metacognition Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30), the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire 6.0 (EDE-Q), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Maudsley Obsessive- Compulsive Inventory (MOCI) were used to evaluate 44 Anorexia Nervosa (AN), 50 Bulimia Nervosa (BN) patients and 37 controls. Patients featured more dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs which positively correlated with ED and comorbid symptoms. …

Recovery for many people with serious mental illness is more than symptom remission or attainment of certain concrete milestones. It can also involve recapturing a previously lost coherent and cohesive sense of self. The authors review several case studies of integrative metacognitive psychotherapy offered to adults with broadly differing clinical presentations. In all the cases, patients demonstrated significant subjective gains and objective improvements-for example, in negative symptoms, in substance use, and in overcoming a history of childhood sexual abuse. By applying this method to vari

Metacognitive Therapy and Pharmacotherapy - Adapted to Unaccompanied Refugee Minors Unaccompanied refugee minors (URM) present a relatively new challenge for adolescent psychotherapy and psychiatry. The evidence of possible treatment approaches is scarce. This paper presents a pragmatic adaptation of Wells' Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) for this population for the first time. Unlike the established trauma-focused treatment approaches MCT does not aim at prolonged exposure to the trauma narrative. Instead, patients shall learn to leave the distressing thoughts alone and to reduce the perseveratin

Dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs ("metacognitions") and executive control are important factors in mental disorders such as depression and anxiety, but the relationship between these concepts has not been studied systematically. We examined whether there is an association between metacognitions and executive control and hypothesized that decreased executive control statistically predicts increased levels of metacognitions. Two hundred and ninety-nine individuals recruited from the general population and outpatient psychiatric clinics completed the Metacognitions Questionnaire-30 and three s…

Many psychological models have been developed to explain the development and maintenance of depression. The most widely evaluated model is the cognitive model of depression, and it is against this model that emerging models should be compared. Accordingly, this cross-sectional study examined whether metacognitive beliefs, as specified in the metacognitive model of depression, would explain additional variance in depressive symptoms over dysfunctional attitudes; the core feature of the cognitive model. Moreover, mediational relationships between metacognitive beliefs, rumination, and depressive

OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition of unknown aetiology, characterised by widespread pain, sleep disturbances, and fatigue. In this paper we examined the relationship metacognitions and the impact of Fibromyalgia in a German sample, detailing the translation and validation of a self-report metacognitive instrument.
METHODS: The Metacognitions about Symptoms Control Scale (MaSCS) was translated into German using the back-forward translation process. A total of 348 patients (316 female and 26 male) with Fibromyalgia contributed data to the study to test the structure and psychometr…

OBJECTIVES: Recent research has suggested that metacognitions may play a role in smoking. The goal of the current set of studies was to develop the first self-report instrument of metacognitions about smoking.
METHOD: We conducted three studies with samples of smokers (n = 222, n = 143, n = 25) to test the structure and psychometric properties of the Metacognitions about Smoking Questionnaire and examined its capacity to predict smoking behaviour.
RESULTS: Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported a four-factor solution: positive metacognitions about cognitive regulation, positi…

Patients with treatment-resistant depression received up to 8 sessions of metacognitive therapy (MCT) targeting attentional control, rumination, worry, and metacognitive beliefs. A baseline period was followed by weekly sessions with follow-up assessments at 6 and 12 months post treatment. Large and statistically significant improvements occurred in all symptom measures at post treatment and were maintained over follow-up. Two out of 3 process measures significantly improved at post treatment and all of these measures were improved at follow-up. Treatment was associated with similar response r

Misdiagnosis of the cause of illness in critically ill patients is common, and a major cause of morbidity and mortality. We reflect upon a misdiagnosis that occurred in the intensive care unit of a metropolitan teaching hospital, and highlight the susceptibility of medical decision making to error. We examine recent advances in cognitive theory and how these apply to diagnosis. We discuss the vulnerability of such processes and - with particular reference to our case - why even knowledgeable and diligent clinicians are prone to misdiagnose. Finally, we review potential solutions, both educatio

BACKGROUND: The short form of the Metacognitions Questionnaire (MCQ-30) is a brief multi-dimensional measure which explores the metacognitive processes and beliefs about worry and cognition that are central to the vulnerability and maintenance of emotional disorders.
AIMS: The first aim of the study was to create and validate a French version of the MCQ-30 in a non-clinical and a clinical sample of depressed in-patients.
METHOD: A French adaptation of the MCQ-30 was administered to a sample of 467 individuals from the general population and 73 hospitalized patients with major depressive diso…

Both cognitive and metacognitive theories implicate posttraumatic metacognition as an important factor in the maintenance of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) following stressful life events (SLEs). The Metacognitions Questionnaire-posttraumatic stress disorder (MCQ-PTSD; Wells, 2009) was previously developed to assess for metacognitions specific to SLEs and resulting PTSS. This study aimed to examine the construct validity of this measure in the context of childhood SLEs specifically. First, we confirmed the factor structure underlying the MCQ-PTSD in our sample. We then assessed whether t…

Impaired metacognition, the capacity to understand one's own and others' mental states, has gained increasing attention in psychosis research. Different conceptualizations, psychological treatments and assessment methods have emerged; however, there is a lack of consensus regarding the appropriate tools for clinical and research use. This systematic review had two aims: (1) to compile and organize available assessment tools and (2) to propose an index of metacognitive domains and processes. Instruments were categorized according to authorship, year of use in psychosis, outcomes assessed, langu…

Medical anatomy education has traditionally relied on lectures, hands-on prosection, and textbooks, with recent enhancements through digital materials. This study investigates the integration of virtual reality (VR) technology in anatomy education and its impact on student engagement, metacognitive development, and learning outcomes. Through two experimental cycles with first-year medical students, the VR application was evaluated across key usability dimensions, including engagement, engrossment, and total immersion, alongside its contribution to fostering metacognitive strategies through met

The term schizotypy refers to the latent personality organization that is thought to underpin the liability to develop schizophrenia and associated disorders. Metacognition, or the ability to understand and form increasingly complex and integrated ideas of oneself, others, and one's community, has been proposed to be an important transdiagnostic construct across schizophrenia spectrum disorders and a range of both clinical and non-clinical manifestations of schizotypy. In this paper, we review evidence that deficits in metacognition are present in individuals with relatively high levels of sch…

Metacognition and Insight are related to hard-to-treat disorders and among them is Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). We recruited 190 BPD patients and measured Insight, Metacognition, Impulsivity, and BPD traits. Results showed BPD's significant links with Insight and Metacognition. Metacognition significantly correlated with two Impulsivity dimensions, whereas Insight significantly correlated with most of them. Regressions analysis revealed a significant relationship between Insight and Metacognition on Impulsivity and Borderline traits. Mediation analysis proved the indirect effect of M…

INTRODUCTION: Premonitory urges in Tourette disorder are often linked to altered somatosensory processing, which might include deficits in metacognition. We explored tactile and visual metacognitive ability in people with Tourette disorder and healthy control participants.
METHODS: Patients with Tourrete disorder and healthy control participants completed a tactile and a visual metacognitive task. On each trial, participants did a forced choice discrimination and then rated their confidence in their decision. To quantify metacognitive ability, we used m-ratio - a bias-free measure that allows…
