We performed scanning electron microscopy of an inverted blister roof in a case of pemphigus foliaceus. The loss of intercellular adherence could be easily seen with low magnification. The acantholytic keratinocytes displayed an irregular and sometimes polygonal contour. Round cells, typically seen in light microscopy, were also observed. The examination of a blister roof allows ultrastructural documentation of the acantholytic changes.

A 78-year-old woman from south-central Texas without a history of travel outside the state presented with an erythematous papule on her right forearm. The use of electron microscope in the study of the diseased skin of four patients with Alopecia areata has detected changes in the endothelial cells with narrowed capillary lumen. The authors describe a technique with which one can perform electron microscopy on conjunctival epithelial cells acquired by impression cytology. With adjacent excisional and impression biopsies of conjunctival epithelium in patients having mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS), typical fibrillo-granular inclusions are shown. This noninvasive procedure has potential for the study of subcellular, cellular, and intercellular morphology in diseases of the ocular surface.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed on specimens from 16 patients with low-grade tumors, and 4 patients with benign lesions of the upper urinary tract.
