Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for residual depressive symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is a new group-based intervention for prevention of relapse in recurrent depression which has not been scientifically evaluated regarding its clinical effectiveness for ameliorating residual depressive symptoms following a depressive episode. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of MBCT in reducing residual depressive symptoms in psychiatric outpatients with recurrent depression, and to particularly explore the effects of mindfulness techniques on rumination. DESIGN: The design of this study was a mixed model complex design. D…

Navigating space and the developing mind.

In this article, we review the extensive and complex fabric of literature concerning the ontogenesis of spatial representations from earliest childhood to the elderly, including normal and abnormal aging (dementia and Alzheimer's disease). We also revisit fundamental concepts of the neuronal representations of space, egocentric vs. allocentric reference frames, and path integration. We highlight a thread of contradictions in spatial cognition from infant cognition to the first breakthrough at around the age of four. The contradictions reemerge in the literature on age-related decline in spatia

Nail disorders to be kept in mind.

Recognizing and diagnosing the most common nail diseases is essential, to be able to guide patients and provide appropriate treatment. However, uncommon nail disorders should not be neglected, in order to avoid inadequate treatment and above all to ensure that no severe underlying disorder, with severe prognosis, is overlooked.

Tapia's Syndrome: keep it in mind!

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to revise the etiologic features about Tapia's Syndrome (TS), a condition to particularly consider in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A systematic review was performed according to the PRISMA criteria. The Medline and Embase databases were searched from January 1, 1990, to December 31, 2020. Initially the search yielded 399 manuscripts, which were reduced to 50, upon the application of inclusion criteria. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: A total of 65 patients were included in the present review. Mean age was 44±17.5 (DS) years (15-95); M:F

Amyloid in the Brain, Alzheimer's on the Mind.

Twenty percent of patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease by experts like me in fact don't have elevated amyloid and so, in fact, don't have Alzheimer's. What they do have is the subject of intense research, and there are many possibilities. A recent study of one thousand brain autopsies from older adults with a range of cognitive impairment showed at least 230 combinations of neuropathology. The point is that while the disease will be treatable, we're unlikely to defeat it as we did polio and smallpox. We're going to have to learn how to live with Alzheimer's as an at least somewhat treat

Mind and body therapy for fibromyalgia.

BACKGROUND: Mind-body interventions are based on the holistic principle that mind, body and behaviour are all interconnected. Mind-body interventions incorporate strategies that are thought to improve psychological and physical well-being, aim to allow patients to take an active role in their treatment, and promote people's ability to cope. Mind-body interventions are widely used by people with fibromyalgia to help manage their symptoms and improve well-being. Examples of mind-body therapies include psychological therapies, biofeedback, mindfulness, movement therapies and relaxation strategies…

Modulating mind-wandering in dysphoria.

Depression is associated with significant difficulty staying "in the moment" as the mind tends to wander away from current activity to focus instead on personal concerns. Mind-wandering (MW) may in some instances be a precursor for depressive rumination, a thinking style believed to confer vulnerability to the likelihood and extent of depression. Thus, MW may be not only a consequence but also a cause of low mood. Identifying a paradigm that could modulate MW, particularly in depressed individuals, would allow future studies to test whether elevated rates of MW causally drive cognitive-affecti

Madura foot - mind the soil.

'Madura foot' or mycetoma is a chronic granulomatous soft-tissue infection, caused by either true fungi (eumycetoma) or Gram-positive aerobic bacteria (actinomycetoma). The infection is endemic to equatorial, tropical or sub-tropical regions. However, sporadic cases have been reported in the Western world mostly in the migrant population. The disease follows a slow progression from the time of traumatic inoculation to presentation of symptoms, characterised by a triad of chronic indurated swelling, draining sinuses and discharging granules. The granules are diagnostic as they represent collect

[Theory of mind in Asperger syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: Theory of mind deficit can be used to explain social and communication impairments that define the autism spectrum disorder. Theory of mind is the ability to attribute mental states to self and others in order to understand and predict behavior. It involves the distinction between the real world and mental representations of the world. Several studies established that high functioning autistic individuals and individuals with Asperger syndrome (ASP) tend to be as proficient as controls in understanding first order false belief tasks. In contrast, they still lag behind their typic

Telling about the stolen mind.

Art forms (music, painting, sculpture, literature and theatre) are essential components in all social and human contexts. The role of art, in this case of theatre, is to express a visual event that aims to help the spectator identify himself/herself in the characters. The play presented here is "A...come non so" and shows the characteristic aspects of Alzheimer's disease from the first stage of the disease to the last stage: amnesia, aphasia, agnosia and apraxia. It tells the story of Carlo Pontercoli, a gerontologist and specialist in cardiovascular disease, who, while writing his paper on "T

Mind and brain in Rett disorder.

Development and retention of speech is reported in 265 people with Rett syndrome: 30% (80) never gained real words, 55% (145) gained real words and lost them, 15%(40) retained some words and 6% of the total (16/265) continued to use phrases appropriately. Morphological studies of the cytoarchitecture of the speech areas in 14 cases indicate the existence of interhemispheric differences which form part of the infrastructure for speech processing. Ten adults with Rett syndrome and with meaningful speech are compared to age matched adults without speech. The profile of mind and strategies for cop

The nested networks of brains and minds.

The reductionist approach to the brain shows promise of revolutionizing our ideas about what single neurons can do. A spine on a cortical pyramidal cell is about the size of a single Escherichia coli, and if the internal machinery of a spine is anything like as well organized as that of E. coli, the whole pyramidal cell with its 5000 spines must be capable of computations an order of magnitude more complex than those demanded of the neurons used for current models of the brain. These computations might enable single neurons to detect spatiotemporal patterns, i.e. Hebb's 'phase sequences'. Redu

The five mysteries of the mind, and their consequences.

While Western man has recognized for almost 2500 years that mind derives exclusively from brain, clothing this fact with explanatory detail still proves elusive. First, is consciousness per se, created by processes demonstrably limited to certain, but still unspecified, neuronal arrangements and activities. Then there is perception, its ineffable qualia, and the fact that it arises from neuronal activity widely dispersed in space and time within networks of vast complexity. Voluntary control is equally dispersed as to neuronal participation, and nescient as to origin. An often overlooked myste
