Banning loot boxes for minors: A public health framework and the case of Brazil.

Brazil's Digital Child and Adolescent Act (2025) prohibits paid loot boxes in games accessible to minors under a public health and child-rights framework, regardless of whether they should be classified as gambling. The law focuses on psychological mechanisms underlying harm, including variable-ratio reinforcement and reward uncertainty, to which adolescents are developmentally vulnerable. It establishes administrative sanctions, including fines of up to 10% of the company's revenue and service suspension, and restricts personalized advertising and algorithmic systems targeting minors. As the

The effect of a minor health shock on labor market outcomes: The case of concussions.

The literature on health shocks finds that minor injuries have only short-term labor market impacts. However, mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs, commonly referred to as concussions) may be different as the medical literature highlights that they can have longer-term health and cognitive effects. Moreover, TBIs are one of the most common causes of disability globally, with the vast majority being mild. Thus, it is important to understand the impact of mTBIs on labor market outcomes. We use administrative data on all medically-diagnosed mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) in New Zealand lin

A Review of the Role of the School Spatial Environment in Promoting the Visual Health of Minors.

Rising childhood myopia rate has detrimental health consequences that pose a considerable challenge to health systems. The school spatial environment, which is where students are for the longest period of time, has a high health value for myopia systematic intervention. While research has demonstrated associations between physical daylight environments, medical gene and visual health, the literature currently lacks a synthesis of evidence that will act as a spatially-organized resource for school designers. This study is based on literature from the period 2000-2022 and has been taken from the

Surgical Health Needs of Minor Refugees in Germany: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: There has been a substantial rise in refugees entering Germany over the past years, of which approximately one-third are underaged. Many end up in pediatric surgical care, and little is known about the health of these individuals. Our study was designed to assess the surgical-related health status of underage refugees based on a large sample cohort. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After ethics board approval, we used a structured questionnaire to collect demographic information and surgical health-related elements in three large refugee accommodation centers. RESULTS: A total of 461 min

Potential barriers to the use of health services among ethnic minorities: a review.

BACKGROUND: Ethnic minority patients seem to be confronted with barriers when using health services. Yet, care providers are often oblivious to these barriers, although they may share to some extent the burden of responsibility for them. In order to enlighten care providers, as to the potential pitfalls that may exist, there is a need to explore the different factors in the creation of the barriers. OBJECTIVE: Therefore, the objective of this paper is to present an overview of the potential barriers and the factors, which may restrict ethnic minority patients from using health services, accor

Filling the gap: equity and access to oral health services for minorities and the underserved.

Family physicians and other primary care providers play a pivotal role in preventing oral disease, especially among minority and underserved populations who have limited access to dental services and poorer oral health status. Oral diseases/conditions, such as caries, baby bottle tooth decay, gingivitis, periodontitis, oral pharyngeal malignancies, and orofacial trauma, are prevalent and costly, yet largely preventable. Given their role in promoting and protecting overall health and their historical role in serving minority and underserved families, family physicians occupy a unique position t

Is the use of hypnotics, sedatives and minor tranquilizers really a major health problem?

An analysis has been made of individual purchases of hypnotics, sedatives and minor tranquilizers made during 1973 by patients who had bought such drugs either only once (group S, n= 417) or regularly (group R, n=76) during a 16-month period five years earlier from pharmacies in the town of Ostersund, county of Jmtland, Sweden. By 1973, 17% of the patients in each group had either died or moved out of the country and were therefore excluded from the comparison. In group S, 81 patients (23%) bought the above drugs once or more in 1973, while the corresponding figure for group R was 55 (87%). Co

Health Care Delays, Mental Health Care, and Discrimination among US Sexual and Gender Minority Adults: Intersectional Analysis of State-level Policies.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals experience profound health inequities exacerbated by delays in health care and underutilization of mental health services. This study examined the association of intersectional state-level policy inclusiveness (racial equity, sexual orientation inclusiveness, and gender inclusiveness) with delays in health care, mental health service use, and discrimination in medical settings (DMS) among a sample of SGM adults in the United States. METHODS: Data were analyzed from 21,701 SGM adults participating in the All of Us Research Program 2021

Parental Beliefs in Relation to Sexual Minority Young Adults' Critical Consciousness, Mental Health, and Substance Use.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority young adults (SMYAs) display elevated rates of mental health symptoms and substance use relative to their heterosexual peers. This study examined associations of parental beliefs with SMYAs' critical consciousness and health outcomes. METHODS: We analyzed data among 548 US SMYAs (ages 18-25) residing in Oklahoma and surrounding states who participated in a 2-wave online observational survey study. Multivariable regressions conducted separately for each outcome examined associations of 1) parental beliefs (i.e., political beliefs and religious importance) with SMYAs

Mental health and the role of social support in the lives of vulnerabilized sexual minority women.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual minority women (SMW; women who self-identify as lesbian, queer, etc., as well as heterosexually-identified women who experience attraction to romantic or sexual partnerships with women) and vulnerabilized women (those marginalized due to structural forces such as housing insecurity, violence, sex exchange, drug use, or HIV positive status) experience a range of mental health challenges compared to their heterosexual and general population counterparts. General populations studies show a positive relationship between social support and mental health; less is known about SMW

Linking stressful experiences to health disparities among sexual and gender minority individuals: The sleep deficiency pathway.

It is well documented that sexual and gender minority people encounter stressful experiences such as family relationship problems and even physical violence more often than do heterosexual people. The causal roles of such stressful experiences in sleep deficiency and of sleep deficiency in mental and physical health are also well documented. That sexual and gender minority individuals suffer multiple health disparities has also been established. What is not yet well understood is how these variables might be linked. This article explores what is called the "sleep deficiency pathway"-that is, t

Minority stress and mental health in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer survivors of sexual assault.

Extant research has shown that sexual violence disproportionately affects lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals, conferring risk for the development of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and related mental health conditions. However, little research has focused on specific vulnerabilities among LGBTQ+-identified sexual assault (SA) survivors (e.g., minority stress) and their associations with post-SA psychopathology. To address this gap, we examined associations between experiences of minority stress and post-SA psychopathology in a sample of LGBTQ+ individuals

Discrimination, Substance Use, and Mental Health among Sexual and Gender Minority Adults Accessing Day Shelter Services.

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) adults are overrepresented in the population of individuals experiencing homelessness, and high rates of substance use are common in this group. Plausibly, poor mental health and discrimination may contribute to substance use among SGM adults experiencing homelessness. This study described participant characteristics, and the interrelations among sociodemographic variables, substance use, mental health, and discrimination experiences among 87 SGM adults seeking services at a day shelter in Oklahoma City, OK. Discrimination experiences were character
