Prevalence of cutaneous reactions to the pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) in an adult population.

BACKGROUND: Thaumetopoea pityocampa [pine processionary moth (PPM)] is one of the most important lepidopteran agents causing urticant cutaneous reactions in humans in Mediterranean countries. This species is also expanding northwards, because of global warming. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence, distribution by habitat group and possible risk factors of PPM cutaneous reactions in adults. METHODS: A randomly designed survey was carried out on 1224 adults. RESULTS: A point prevalence, estimated after corrections, of 8.7% was obtained (12% rural areas, 9.6% for semi-urban areas, and 4.

Entomopathogenic nematodes for control of diapausing codling moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in fruit bins.

Fruit bins infested with diapausing larvae of codling moth larvae, Cydia pomonella (L.), are a source of reinfestation of orchards and may jeopardize the success of mating disruption programs and other control strategies. Bins are not routinely treated for control of overwintering codling moth before placing them in orchards. Entomopathogenic nematodes provide a noninsecticidal alternative to methyl bromide that could be applied at the time bins are submerged in dump tanks at the packing house for flotation of fruit. Diapausing codling moth larvae in miniature fruit bins were highly susceptibl

Combinative stimulation inactivates sex pheromone production in the silkworm moth, Bombyx mori.

Mating results in a strong suppression of sex pheromone (bombykol) production in the female silkworm moth, Bombyx mori. The mechanical stimulation from the insertion of a penis, inflation of the bursa copulatrix (BC), or copulation with the sterile male whose penis was removed in order to prevent ejaculation (pr-male) induced only a partial decline in bombykol production. Artificial insemination stimulates oviposition of fertilized eggs as does normal mating. However, bombykol production did not decline in artificially inseminated females. When females were artificially inseminated before or a

Presence of eupyrene spermatozoa in vestibulum accelerates oviposition in the silkworm moth, Bombyx mori.

In the silkmoth, Bombyx mori, mating accelerates egg laying. Sterilized males did not induce females to oviposit, whereas artificial insemination was enough to accelerate oviposition. These findings showed that mechanical stimulation of the outer reproductive organs and the bursa copulatrix (BC) had no effect on oviposition. Factors included in seminal fluids also did not stimulate oviposition because neither implantation of female internal reproductive organs nor injection of the spermatophore extract into virgin females activated oviposition. Preventing sperm precedence by experimental remov

Sun moths in the genus Epicroesa (Lepidoptera, Heliodinidae) associated with Ceodes umbellifera, with description of a new species from Taiwan.

The association of two heliodinid moths with Ceodes umbellifera is documented for the first time: Epicroesa thiasarcha Meyrick, 1907 from Australia and E. bellatula sp. nov. from Taiwan. The two share similar wing patterns and genitalia, but they can be separated by diagnostic features of adults and immatures. The p-distance of COI barcodes was over 9% between samples of the two taxa, lending support to their recognition as distinct species. The considerable geographical separation between these morphologically similar yet genetically diverged species suggests that either both may have broader…

Farnesyl biliverdins IXα are novel ligands of biliproteins from moths of the Noctuoidea superfamily: A chemosystematic view of the Lepidoptera.

Bilins, derived from biliverdin IXα, are known from animals, plants and microorganisms, where they play vital roles as light-absorbing pigments. Bilins occur also in many insects. Recently, we discovered in insects a novel structural type of bilins with a farnesyl substituent at pyrrole ring A of biliverdin IXα. The first of these unusual bilins with a molecular mass of 852 (C48H60O10N4) was identified in Cerura vinula, subsequently in Spodoptera littoralis; both species are members of the Noctuoidea superfamily of moths. From an evolutionary point of view, it was of interest to examine other …

Genetic Variation and Differentiation of Hylesia metabus (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae): Moths of Public Health Importance in French Guiana and in Venezuela.

Hylesia moths impact human health in South America, inducing epidemic outbreaks of lepidopterism, a puriginous dermatitis caused by the urticating properties of females' abdominal setae. The classification of the Hylesia genus is complex, owing to its high diversity in Amazonia, high intraspecific morphological variance, and lack of interspecific diagnostic traits which may hide cryptic species. Outbreaks of Hylesia metabus have been considered responsible for the intense outbreaks of lepidopterism in Venezuela and French Guiana since the C20, however, little is known about genetic variability…

Host plant volatiles serve to increase the response of male European grape berry moths, Eupoecilia ambiguella, to their sex pheromone.

The European grape berry moth is an important pest in vineyards. Males respond to the female-produced sex pheromone released from a piezo nebulizer in a dose-dependent manner in a wind tunnel: <50% arrive at the source at 5-50 pg/min (underdosed), 80% arrive at 100 pg/min to 10 ng/min (optimal) and <20% arrive at 100 ng/min (overdosed). Males responding to overdosed pheromone show in flight arrestment at 80 cm from the source. Host plant chemostimuli for Eupoecilia ambiguella increase the responses of males to underdosed and overdosed pheromone. (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, (+)-terpinen-4-ol, (E)-beta-ca

A new genus and species of lappet moths (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) from Central Asia with notes on the systematics of the family.

A new genus, Zolotuhia gen. nov., with the type species Zolotuhia paradoxa, sp. nov., from Kyrgyzstan, Talassky Mt. Range, is established in the lepidopteran family Lasiocampidae. The new genus is characterized by a surprising mix of features in the appearance, wing pattern, wing venation, male and female genitalia, shared with different groups of lappet moths. Based on the review of morphology in the Chondrosteginae/Poecilocampinae/Macromphaliinae lineage of Lasiocampidae, a tentative morphological phylogeny of the genera in the Chondrosteginae/Poecilocampidae group is proposed and two new sy…

From concrete to canopy: Illuminating moth biodiversity in New York City's urban jungle.

Moths (Lepidoptera) are sensitive to anthropogenic threats and serve as valuable bioindicators. Despite the remarkable diversity and abundance of Lepidoptera globally, there is a lack of information on how moth species are impacted by urbanization. Notably, very little is known about moths in the most populus city of the United States, New York City, where pervasive urban pollutants, artificial light at night, land cover change, and habitat fragmentation are severe. We examined the effects of urbanization on moth biodiversity in New York City, with a focus on green spaces. We used citizen scie…

Semiochemicals and odorant receptors underlying potato cultivar susceptibility and resistance to potato tuber moth.

Infestation of potato by the potato tuber moth (Phthorimaea operculella) varies markedly among cultivars, yet the chemical and molecular mechanisms underlying this variation remain poorly understood. Here, we combine field surveys, chemical ecology, functional genomics, and structural modeling to reveal how cultivar-specific volatile profiles shape moth oviposition behavior and pest outcomes. Field and laboratory assays identified marked differences in adult attraction, oviposition, and larval damage among potato cultivars, which correlated with distinct blends of emitted volatile organic comp

Multi objective moth swarm algorithm for optimizing electric vehicle integration in distribution grids.

The rapid integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into distribution grids introduces significant challenges, including heightened energy losses, voltage instability, and increased operational costs. Traditional optimization methods often address these issues in isolation, failing to balance the complex, multi-objective nature of modern grids with high EV penetration and renewable variability. This paper proposes a mixed-integer multi-objective optimization framework to simultaneously minimize operational costs, energy losses, load shedding, and voltage deviations over a 24-hour horizon. The mod

Sharp decline in male fertility in F2 hybrids of the female-heterogametic silk moth Bombyx.

Sexual selection drives rapid evolution of morphological, physiological, and behavioral traits, especially in males, and it may also drive the rapid evolution of hybrid male sterility. Indeed, the faster male theory of speciation was once viewed as a major cause of Haldane's rule in male-heterogametic XY taxa, but is increasingly being replaced by the genetic conflict hypothesis partly because it cannot explain the faster evolution of hybrid female sterility in female-heterogametic ZW taxa. The theory nonetheless predicts that there should be more genes for hybrid male sterility than for hybri

Occupational Exposure of Forest Workers to the Urticating Setae of the Pine Processionary Moth Thaumetopoea pityocampa.

The larvae of the pine processionary moth are a threat to public health because they produce detachable setae that are about 200 µm long and 6 µm wide, reaching a total number of up to 1 million per mature individual. The setae are intended to be released to protect the larvae from predators but become a public health issue when in contact with humans and warm-blooded animals. Symptoms associated with the setae are typically urticaria and local swelling erythema, although edema of the skin, conjunctivitis or respiratory mucosa may occur. Occupational exposure concerns mainly forest workers but

Vitrification of Lepidopteran Embryos-A Simple Protocol to Cryopreserve the Embryos of the Sunflower Moth, Homoeosoma electellum.

Embryos of the sunflower moth, Homoeosoma electellum (Hulst), were cryopreserved after modification to the method that was previously described for Pectinophora gossipiella. The workflow to develop the protocol consisted of methods to weaken the embryonic chorion followed by the application of various methods to disrupt the sub-chorionic wax layer. These steps were necessary to render the embryos permeable to water and cryoprotectants. Initially, the embryos were incubated at 21° and 24 °C, and the development of the double pigment spots/eyespot and eclosion were tracked every two hours. The e

Lupus nephritis diagnosis using enhanced moth flame algorithm with support vector machines.

Systemic lupus erythematosus is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the kidney in most patients. Lupus nephritis (LN) is divided into six categories by the International Society of Nephrology/Renal Pathology Society (ISN/RPS). The purpose of this research is to build a framework for discriminating between ISN/RPS pure class V(MLN) and classes III ± V or IV ± V (PLN) using real clinical data. The framework is developed by merging a hybrid stochastic optimizer, moth-flame algorithm (HMFO), with a support vector machine (SVM), dubbed HMFO-SVM. The HMFO is constructed by enhancing the origin

Parotid tuberculosis in a young child causing moth-eaten mandibular osteomyelitis: an elusive diagnosis.

Tuberculosis can affect almost any organ in the body and have unusual presentations. We hereby report a case of parotid tuberculosis causing osteomyelitis of the mandible in a 3-year-old child presenting with left-sided facial swelling since 4 months. There was a history of repeated incision and drainage for suspected parotid abscess elsewhere. Initial work-up was inconclusive. Radiology revealed a heteroechoic mass lesion of the left parotid gland with extensive destruction of the adjacent ascending ramus of the mandible suggesting an odontogenic tumor. Biopsy of the left parotid gland finall

Oviposition Deterrents in Larval Frass of Potato Tuberworm Moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae).

The potato tuberworm moth (PTM) Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is one of the most damaging pests of potato Solanum tuberosum L. in warm temperate and subtropical areas. Our previous experiment showed that extracts of larval frass of PTM deterred oviposition of conspecific females. In this study, we investigated the identification of chemicals in larval frass that were influencing the oviposition of PTM by behavioral bioassays and electroantennography analysis in the laboratory. Frass was collected from third and fourth instar larvae and combined analysis of gas chr
