BACKGROUND: It has been postulated that hip muscle stiffness can be inferred from postural assessment, and that predictable relationships exist between passive stiffness of opposing muscles. Despite a lack of evidence to demonstrate such relationships, manual therapy textbooks continue to direct clinicians to treat hip muscles following postural analysis.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Do significant correlations exist between standing posture, and hip muscle stiffness and range of motion?
METHODS: 20 participants volunteered for this observational study. Passive hip stiffness was calculated as the deri

Hematogenous septic arthritis causes pain and effusion and begins with inoculation of the joint with bacteria from the intravascular space. The degradation of ground substance by enzymes released and activated by the acute inflammatory response, toxins and enzymes produced by the bacteria, and T lymphocytes stimulated during the delayed immune response, leads to destruction of the articular cartilage. Whether a given patient will develop a septic joint or a less severe form of infection is dependent upon characteristics of the bacterial strain and of the individual's host defenses. Management

OBJECTIVE: In the past decades, several treatment approaches have been used to improve upper limb function in hemiplegic cerebral palsy. Only recently has constraint-induced movement therapy emerged as a treatment approach for children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy with the aim of reversing the behavioral suppression of movement in the affected upper limb. To date, evidence on this treatment has been very poor and limited, because all currently available trials reveal methodological limitations and a need for additional research to support the application of this treatment technique. OBJECTIVE: To show that it is possible to determine segment masses and segment centers of mass by measuring manipulator-hand contact forces and joint angles during upper extremity movement.
BACKGROUND: The method serves as a quick subject specific body segment parameter evaluation technique. Clinically we see this method as an alternative upper extremity body segment parameter evaluation study especially useful in rehabilitation treatment activities.
METHODS: The experiment is based on coupling the human arm with a robotic manipulator which is then used for imposing a specified sagittal plan

The economic viability of the manual therapy practitioner depends on the number of massages/treatments that can be given in a day or week. Fatigue or injuries can have a major impact on the income potential and could ultimately reach the point which causes the practitioner to quit the profession, and seek other, less physically demanding, employment. Manual therapy practitioners in general, and massage therapists in particular, can utilize a large variety of body postures while giving treatment to a client. The hypothesis of this paper is that there is an optimal method for applying force to t

Ischemic stroke affects many new patients each year. The sequelae of brain ischemia can include lasting sensorimotor and cognitive deficits, which negatively impact quality of life. Currently, treatment options for improving poststroke deficits are limited, and the development of new clinical alternatives to improve functional recovery after stroke is actively under investigation. Anti-Nogo-A immunotherapy to reduce the central nervous system inhibitory environment, cell transplantation strategies, pharmacological agents, and movement-based therapies represent emerging treatments of poststroke

Passive motion of lower extremities (PMLE) elicits significant increases in alveolar ventilation (V A) in awake children with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS), who have absent or near absent ventilatory responses to hypercapnia. We hypothesized that PMLE would improve V A during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. To study this, six patients with CCHS (0.2 to 7 yr of age) were disconnected from mechanical ventilatory support during Stage III-IV NREM, and their feet were passively moved at the ankle, either manually or with a motorized device strapped to their feet at 40 to 5

A study of physiological patellofemoral crepitus (PPC) signal recorded from adolescent knees has yielded information which suggests that decay time of PPC amplitude due to continuous passive motion (CPM) activity is a consistent and useful signature variable for a given knee. The PPC vibrational signal was induced in each case by 1 min of static load on the patella and postural variables during the examination were carefully controlled. The speed of CPM has been noted as a factor directly influencing the rat of PPC amplitude decay; specifically, a higher CPM speed contributes to an increased d

A randomised, controlled study of the use of postoperative continuous passive motion (CPM) and immobilisation regimen after total condylar knee arthroplasty was performed. CPM resulted in a significant increase in both the early and late range of knee flexion. This increase occurred in both rheumatoid and osteoarthritic patients. The improvement of 10 degrees at 12 months allowed additional important function to be attained. CPM resulted in significantly earlier discharge from hospital. It did not increase the clinical incidence of wound healing problems, nor did it significantly increase the

This study reports the use of rotational osteotomy in 10 patients with locked posterior dislocation of the shoulder. The average interval between injury and diagnosis was 155 days (range, 21-400 days). Patients were aged 40-78 years old, with an average age of 53 years. Articular impaction fracture of the humeral head involved 20-40% of the articular surface as determined by CT analysis. There were no postoperative complications except a transient axillary nerve palsy. Patients were started on immediate passive motion followed by an active program at 2-3 weeks. Using the Rowe/Zarins scale, six

Background Elbow contracture is a debilitating condition with an incidence ranging from as low as almost 1% to as high as 20% and results in significant limiting consequences on a patient's activities of daily living (ADLs). Postoperative rehabilitation is important in maintaining the range of motion and sustaining an improved range of motion. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term results of elbow contracture release surgery and the effect of an occupational therapy/physical therapy (OT/PT)-guided, self-directed rehabilitation program following surgery, without the use of con

Using resting state (RS) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), we identified the predictors of clinical improvement following constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) in pediatric patients with chronic hemiplegia. From 14 children with congenital or acquired brain injury and 10 sex- and age-matched healthy controls, brain dual-echo, DTI and RS fMRI sequences were acquired before CIMT. The Quality of Upper Extremities Skills Test and the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM) were administered at baseline, at the end of CIMT (10 weeks), and after 6 month

In order to determine which variables influence recovery from acoustic neuroma resection, acutely postoperative patients were divided into two groups and treated twice daily at bedside as inpatients at a tertiary care center. Treatment times were increased gradually from 5 to 30 min. Exercise subjects underwent passive and active head movements and walking with augmented head movements. Control subjects received attention without exercise. Pre- and post-tests included vertigo intensity and frequency, low-frequency vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), posturography and path integration. Post-tests we
