The architecture and distribution of surface mucins were studied qualitatively and quantitatively by transmission electron microscopy in ruthenium red stained biopsies of the human conjunctiva. Six control specimens were compared with three from early keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) and with three specimens from severe KCS cases. The morphological diversity of the fish alimentary canal depends on many factors, mainly the diet and phylogeny. We studied the relative densities of the diverse histochemical mucous cell populations in the epithelium of the alimentary canal of the black bullhead, Ameiurus melas, and the wels catfish, Silurus glanis. In the present study, the localization and distribution of mucins in the digestive tract of the chicken are reported. Two histochemical staining techniques, Alcian blue/PAS and high-iron-diamine/Alcian blue, which differentiated neutral from sulphated and sialylated acid mucins were applied to sections of duodenum, ileum, caecum, colon and rectum from pigs aged one day, 3 weeks and 10 weeks. Using a sequential method for the simultaneous demonstration of lysozyme and mucins, the possible existence of a transitional cell intermediate in form between Paneth and goblet cells has been investigated in childhood coeliac disease. Mixed staining for both mucins and lysozyme has not been encountered within intestinal cells of affected mucosae and controls.

Mucin histochemistry was studied in 23 intestinal-type mucinous borderline tumors, 21 endocervical-like mucinous borderline tumors, and 24 mixed-epithelial borderline tumors. The latter two tumors, which are of müllerian type, had a mucin composition similar to that of normal endocervix, with abundant neutral and acidic mucins in approximately equal amounts and a slight predominance of sialomucins over sulfomucins.
