Computed tomography-guided suture anchor localizer placement for multiple pulmonary nodule localization.

INTRODUCTION: Computed tomography (CT)-guided suture anchor localizer (SAL) placement is increasingly used to facilitate preoperative localization of pulmonary nodules (PNs) before video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). Although this approach is well established for single nodules, evidence regarding its application in multiple nodules remains limited. AIM: We aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of CT-guided SAL placement for simultaneous localization of multiple PNs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 2-center retrospective study was conducted enrolling patients who underwent CT-guided SA

The role of microwave ablation in combination with surgery in the management of multiple high-risk pulmonary nodules.

AIM: To evaluate the feasibility and safety of surgical resection combined with microwave ablation (MWA) for patients with multiple high-risk pulmonary nodules. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From September 2010 to November 2023, a total of 166 early multiple high-risk pulmonary nodule patients in our institution were retrospectively analyzed. Fifty-three patients who underwent surgical resection in combination with MWA were considered as the observation group, and 113 patients who underwent two operations or one operation to remove nodules in two lobes of the lungs were considered as the control gro

[Intrapulmonary sarcoid, presenting as tumor or as multiple pulmonary nodules with and without cavities (author's transl)].

Eight cases of nodular, partially cavitary intrapulmonary--mainly acute--sarcoid mimicking metastatic disease or cavitary disease of other etiology are presented to point out the fact that sarcoid can occur in this form. Almost all these patients were young and asymptomatic with the lesions discovered incidentally on the chest films taken for other reasons. The pulmonary nodules and cavities present differential diagnostic problems; with the concomitant--or previous--presence of hilar or mediastinal lymph-adenopathy and the finding of unsharp borders of the nodules somewhat supporting the diag

Brought with the wind: A case of melioidosis acquired in the United States presenting with multiple pulmonary nodules.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis, is a gram-negative bacterium historically endemic to Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. However, recent environmental detection along the Gulf Coast and an increasing number of reported cases in non-travelers have raised questions regarding potential endemicity and environmental establishment in the Southern United States. We report a case of putatively locally acquired pulmonary melioidosis in a Florida resident with no recent international travel history, illustrating the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges posed by this ra

[A case of primary small intestinal malignant lymphoma found based on multiple pulmonary nodules with cavitation].

A 72-year-old man complained of dyspnea and epigastric pain. He was admitted to our hospital with progressive dyspnea and abnormal chest radiograph findings. Chest CT scan on admission showed multiple nodular shadows with and without air-bronchograms, vessels or cavitation. Transbronchial and percutaneous lung biopsy specimens demonstrated poorly differentiated carcinoma. Pulmonary metastases were suspected, but their primary origin was unknown. Chest and abdominal CT scans on the 18th hospital day showed a giant tumor of the small intestine and rapid progression of the pulmonary tumor, formin

Non-inferiority comparison of medical glue and hook-wire for preoperative localization of multiple pulmonary nodules.

BACKGROUND: Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery is a widely employed minimally invasive approach for resecting pulmonary nodules. However, precisely localizing deep-seated or poorly visualized nodules remains a prominent challenge. This study aims to compare the effectiveness and safety of medical glue vs. hook-wire in the CT-guided localization of multiple pulmonary nodules. METHODS: A prospective cohort of patients scheduled for CT-guided localization of multiple pulmonary nodules between February 2024 and August 2024 was enrolled. Patients were randomized into a medical glue group and a h…

Simultaneous Patent Blue Dye Injections Aid in the Preoperative CT-Guided Localization of Multiple Pulmonary Nodules.

Background and Objectives: Clinically, a major challenge of multiple nodule localization is puncture-related pneumothorax, which may hamper the successful localization. This study aims to investigate and compare the efficacy and safety of the simultaneous and sequential patent blue dye (PBD) injections for identifying multiple pulmonary nodules during preoperative CT-guided localization. Materials and Methods: Sixty-one consecutive patients with multiple pulmonary nodules who underwent preoperative CT-guided localization with PBD injections between January 2020 and December 2020 were retrospec…

[A case of melioidosis occurring after a long-term stay in Vietnam that developed pulmonary cavitation and relapsed with multiple pulmonary nodules].

A 69-year-old man complained of fever in September 2009, after returning from Vietnam where he has been working for 20 years. He had diabetes mellitus and was on diabetic oral medication. He was examined at a nearby hospital, and found out to have pneumonia with cavity formation in the right upper lobe which was found out to be not due to tuberculosis. Although the patient once recovered with antibacterial medicine, after a few months, in January 2010, he was admitted to our hospital because of recurrent fever. Computed tomography revealed multiple pulmonary nodules which were thought to be pu…

Pulmonary Recruitment Prior to Intraoperative Multiple Pulmonary Ground-Glass Nodule Localization Increases the Localization Accuracy-A Retrospective Study.

The standard treatment for early-stage lung cancer is complete tumor excision by limited resection of the lung. Preoperative localization is used before video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) to improve the accuracy of pulmonary nodule excision. However, lung atelectasis and hypoxia resulting from controlling apnea during the localization procedure may affect the localization accuracy. Pre-procedural pulmonary recruitment may improve the respiratory mechanics and oxygenation during localization. In this study, we investigated the potential benefits of pre-localization pulmonary recruitmen

Electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy for localization of bilateral multiple pulmonary nodules: a comparative evaluation of safety and efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer frequently presents with bilateral multiple pulmonary nodules (BMPNs), whose accurate intraoperative localization during surgery is challenging, making reliable preoperative localization essential. This retrospective study evaluates the safety and efficacy of electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy-guided dye marking (ENBDM) compared with conventional computed tomography-guided percutaneous dye marking (CTPDM) for localizing BMPNs. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients with BMPNs who underwent preoperative localization (either ENBDM or CTPDM) …

A 68-year-old woman with a diagnosis of asthma and multiple fleeting pulmonary nodules- a case report.

Diffuse idiopathic pulmonary neuroendocrine cell (DIPNECH syndrome) remains unfamiliar to most clinicians even though it was first described almost 30 years ago. Diagnosis is usually confirmed histopathologically after lung biopsy, but often, a diagnosis or suspected diagnosis can be made radiographically. In this paper, we present a case report of a 68-year-old female with shortness of breath and fleeting pulmonary nodules observed on chest CT scan. She was initially misdiagnosed with asthma based on an abnormal pulmonary function test which revealed an obstructive ventilatory defect. The cla

[A case of pulmonary Mycobacterium avium infection presenting multiple nodules with substantial difference in 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose uptake].

A 56-year-old man presented with a chief complaint of chronic cough due to bronchial asthma and pulmonary emphysema in 2001, without any abnormal findings on chest CT. His symptoms improved with high-dose inhaled corticosteroid. In February 2004, multiple nodules without bronchiectasis appeared in the chest CT. Pulmonary Mycobacterium avium infection was diagnosed by bronchial lavage and sputum culture. After multiple nodules appeared and disappeared repeatedly without medication, most nodules vanished after administration of antituberculous drugs. In Feburary 2007, a rapidly growing mass appe

Systemic light chain deposition disease presenting as multiple pulmonary nodules. A case report and review of the literature.

This case report describes the primary manifestation of systemic light chain deposition disease as bilateral nodules on chest radiographs. Although this case was initially classified as amyloidosis, a subsequent renal biopsy and ultrastructural, histochemical, and immunohistochemical studies allowed its distinction from amyloidosis. Kappa light chains were expressed with immunoperoxidase studies on paraffin-embedded tissue, and ultrastructural studies showed the dense, granular deposits characteristic of systemic light chain deposition disease. Serum and urine electrophoresis showed a monoclon
