BACKGROUND: We conducted an observational study to assess the hypothesis that the pelvic muscles actively open the anorectal lumen during defecation.
METHODS: Three groups of female patients were evaluated with video imaging studies of defecation using a grid or bony reference points. Eight patients with idiopathic fecal incontinence had video myogram defecography; eight with obstructive defecation had magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) defecating proctograms; and four normal patients had video X-ray or MRI defecating proctogram studies.

Previous in vivo studies have demonstrated that alpha, beta, and gamma ATP chemical shifts measured by 31P NMR spectroscopy can be used to determine intracellular magnesium in erythrocytes, but up to now such results have not been confirmed in striated muscle in vivo. We report beta ATP chemical-shift in vivo measurements revealing the depletion of free intracellular magnesium in striated muscle of rats fed a magnesium deficient diet.

In 4 experiments, various striated penile muscles of the rat were excised. Without the ischiocavernosus (IC) muscles no dorsiflexions ('flips') of the glans penis occurred during ex copula reflex tests, but erections were unaffected. The serum of a patient with myasthenia gravis contained a particularly high titer of antistriated muscle antibodies, as well as a monoclonal IgM Kappa immunoglobulin. The antibody activity was only associated with IgG fractions and not with the monoclonal IgM, when these immunoglobulins were separated by chromatography. The association of these two immunological disorders is discussed.

The Popeye domain containing (POPDC) genes encode transmembrane proteins, which are abundantly expressed in striated muscle cells. The isometric twitch and tetanic contractions of three hindlimb muscles (soleus, plantaris, extensor digitorum longus) were recorded in situ in groups of mdx and C57BL/10 control mice at young, adult and old ages (3, 4, 6, 8, 13, 26, 39 and 52 weeks).
