Strigolactones, signals for parasitic plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.

Although strigolactones play a critical role as rhizospheric signaling molecules for the establishment of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis and for seed germination of parasitic weeds, scarce data are available about interactions between AM fungi and strigolactones. In the present work, we present background data on strigolactones from studies on their seed germination activity on the parasitic weeds Orobanche and Striga, the importance of nitrogen and phosphorus for this seed germination activity, and what this could mean for AM fungi. We also present results on the susceptibility of plan

Oak seedling growth and ectomycorrhizal colonization are less in eastern hemlock stands infested with hemlock woolly adelgid than in adjacent oak stands.

Invasive, non-indigenous, phytophagous insects have caused widespread declines in several dominant tree species. The decline in dominant tree species may lead to cascading effects on other tree and microbial species and their interactions, affecting forest recovery following the decline. In the eastern USA, eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr) is declining because of infestation by the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA; Adelges tsugae Annand). Northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) is a common replacement species in declining hemlock stands, but reduced mycorrhizal inoculum potential in infeste

Mycorrhizal tree dominance effects on community-level nutrient status and resorption efficiency depend on tree diversity in a subtropical young forest.

Tree mycorrhizal type and tree species diversity are pivotal drivers of nutrient contents and resorption of individual plants. However, it i … control' is a main regulator of PRE in subtropical forests. Our results provide a guidance of using mycorrhizae-associated tree species to achieve more available nutrient resources and thereby improving productivity in mixture plantations.

Alleviation of salinity stress by EDTA chelated-biochar and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on maize via modulation of antioxidants activity and biochemical attributes.

Salinity stress adversely affects agricultural productivity by disrupting water uptake, causing nutrient imbalances, and leading to ion toxicity. Excessive salts in the soil hinder crops root growth and damage cellular functions, reducing photosynthetic capacity and inducing oxidative stress. Stomatal closure further limits carbon dioxide uptake that negatively impact plant growth. To ensure sustainable agriculture in salt-affected regions, it is essential to implement strategies like using biofertilizers (e.g. arbuscular mycorrhizae fungi = AMF) and activated carbon biochar. Both amendments c…

Large-scale tubular and tubular-lamellar intracellular membrane systems of fungi.

Filamentous fungi and oomycetes have four large intracellular membrane systems consisting of tubes, lamellae, or a combination thereof. Such elongated membrane structures can extend for tens of micrometers in hyphal cells, branching and connecting into bundles and networks. These systems are represented by tubular vacuoles, elongated mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, and macroinvaginations of the plasma membrane. They are most developed in xylotrophic and mycorrhiza-forming basidiomycetes. This review examines three membrane systems, excluding the macroinvaginations. Various morphotypes of

Waitea circinata: a novel biocontrol agent against Meloidogyne enterolobii on tomato plants.

Root-knot nematodes (RKN), particularly Meloidogyne enterolobii, pose a significant threat to agriculture, with current management heavily reliant on agrochemicals due to a scarcity of resistant crop varieties. This study explores orchid mycorrhizae, specifically Waitea circinata, as a sustainable biocontrol method to mitigate nematode infestation in tomato plants. The research aimed to compare different application methods and dosages of mycelial suspensions to reduce nematode reproduction and enhance plant health. Two application methods, root immersion for 24 hours and soil drenching, were …

In situ seed baiting and DNA metabarcoding support developmental continuity of a Coprinellus association in the predominantly leafless orchid Cremastra aphylla.

Although orchids depend on mycorrhizal fungi for germination, their early-stage fungal partners may be replaced during subsequent development. This possibility is particularly relevant in Calypsoinae, in which many green species shift from juvenile associations with wood-decaying fungi to adult associations with rhizoctonia fungi. To determine whether a comparable shift occurs in the predominantly leafless orchid Cremastra aphylla, we combined in situ seed packet burial with ITS2 metabarcoding in a single population. We investigated fungal associations among small protocorms, large protocorms,

Differential responses of fungal guilds to climatic effects mediated by changes in dominant vegetation.

Climate is a major driver of fungal species distributions and community composition, yet disentangling the effects of climate-mediated changes in dominant vegetation from other climatic effects remains a key challenge. To separate climatic effects mediated by dominant vegetation from other climatic effects on soil fungal communities, we analyzed soil fungal communities from eight European altitudinal gradients including sites with homogeneous and heterogeneous dominant vegetation. We combined community-level analyses with species-level hierarchical modeling to assess how different fungal ecolo

Responses of arbuscular mycorrhizal wheat to salinity: from symbiotic signaling to stress adaptation.

Salinity is a major constraint to wheat productivity, imposing osmotic stress, ionic imbalance, and oxidative pressure that compromise growth and yield. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi can improve wheat performance under salinity through effects extending beyond nutrient acquisition. This review examines the context-dependent symbiosis between wheat and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, in which reciprocal signaling and resource exchange influence stress adaptation. Direct studies, particularly in durum and bread wheat, indicate that AM colonization can improve K⁺/Na⁺ balance, nutrient acquisition, w

Volatile organic compound profiles in oat are shaped by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, barley yellow dwarf virus and soil herbicide residues.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted by plants and vary in quantity and composition depending on biotic and abiotic environmental conditions. Plant-emitted VOCs are altered by attacking herbivores and pathogens, and have been increasingly found to be fine-tuned by microbial associates and environmental pollutants. Here, we studied whether arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) treatment, barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) infection, and soil pollution with glyphosate-based herbicide (GBH) residues affect the emission of volatile organic compounds by oat (Avena sativa) plants. Oat plants wer

Establishment of a PEG-mediated protoplast transformation system for the orchid mycorrhizal fungus Mycena purpureofusca.

Mycena purpureofusca is an essential symbiotic fungus associated with Gastrodia elata and Dendrobium officinale, two economically important medicinal and edible orchids in China. However, the lack of an efficient and stable genetic transformation system has limited research on orchid-fungal symbiosis and constrained the development of improved fungal strains. In this study, we established an efficient PEG-mediated protoplast transformation system for M. purpureofusca using the pCAMBIA1303 vector. Key parameters affecting protoplast preparation were evaluated by step-wise single-factor experime

Unraveling the chemical communication of root exudates and allelopathy for sustainable ecology and agriculture.

Root exudates, a complex mixture of organic and inorganic compounds secreted by healthy plant roots, play a central role in belowground chemical interactions, particularly through the phenomenon of allelopathy. These exudates, which include phenolic acids, flavonoids, amino acids, terpenoids, phytohormones, and fatty acids, do more than support nutrient mobilization and microbial associations. They act as allelochemicals that affect the germination, growth, and physiology of neighboring plants. Allelopathy influences key ecological processes such as plant succession, species dominance, and the

Cultivation and mating of the truffle Tuber japonicum in plantations of ectomycorrhizal Quercus serrata seedlings.

UNLABELLED: Tuber japonicum, a white-colored truffle that is endemic to Japan, is promising for culinary purposes due to its unique aroma. We were able to cultivate T. japonicum in plantations of inoculated Quercus serrata seedlings for the first time. Ascocarps were found after 43 months at one site and after 61 months at another. We developed simple sequence repeat markers for multilocus genotyping of glebal tissue and ascospores and confirmed that the harvested ascocarps were derived from inocula. All paternal individuals matched the multilocus genotypes of neighboring maternal individuals,

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi influence the speciation and subcellular abundance of uranium in plant roots.

Uranium (U) is a natural radioactive metal and a persistent environmental pollutant. Characterising the influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on U bioaccumulation and partitioning in plants is crucial to understand U soil-to-plant transfer mechanisms. High resolution elemental mapping, spectroscopy and microscopy techniques were conducted on uranyl nitrate dosed Plantago lanceolata roots colonised with Rhizophagus irregularis. U-rich particles accumulated within the root cells, with higher abundance in epidermal and outer cortex cells of mycorrhizal root samples than in non-mycorrhiz

Hyphosphere fungi-bacteria-plant interactions regulate phosphorus tradeoffs in the soil plant system.

Tripartite interactions among arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), and terrestrial plants are pivotal in plant stress resistance, nutritional cycling, and soil-microbe ecological functions. The convoluted association between AMF and PSB may play a significant role in the decomposition and absorption of soil organic phosphorus (P), because AMF dynamically secretes carbon-containing compounds from extraradical hyphae (ERH) to stimulate PSB growth rate and activities. PSB are the main contributors of plant nutrition and could play a pivotal role in making so

Next-Gen Bioinoculants: Bacterial, Yeast, and Mycorrhizal Consortia for Drought-Tolerance in Lettuce.

Drought is a key factor that affects food production and represents one of the major challenges to global food security, especially with the increasing human population. One of the main strategies to improve drought tolerance in plants has been the use of beneficial rhizosphere microorganisms. However, within the rhizosphere, microorganisms establish diverse relationships with each other and with the host plants, positively or negatively affecting the drought tolerance. To address this complexity, the use of microorganisms that fulfill different niches producing an improved drought stress tole

The use of biostimulants as a key to sustainable hydroponic lettuce farming under saline water stress.

BACKROUND: The utilization of high-quality water in agriculture is increasingly constrained by climate change, affecting availability, quality, and distribution due to altered precipitation patterns, increased evaporation, extreme weather events, and rising salinity levels. Salinity significantly challenges salt-sensitive vegetables like lettuce, particularly in a greenhouse. Hydroponics water quality ensures nutrient solution stability, enhances nutrient uptake, prevents contamination, regulates pH and electrical conductivity, and maintains system components. This study aimed to mitigate salt

Plant-soil feedback regulates the trade-off between phosphorus acquisition pathways in Pinus elliottii.

Plant-soil feedback (PSF) is conventionally characterized by plant biomass growth, yet it remains unclear how PSF affects plant nutrient acquisition strategies (e.g., nutrient absorption and nutrient resorption) associated with plant growth, particularly under changing soil environments. A greenhouse experiment was performed with seedlings of Pinus elliottii Englem and conditioned soils of monoculture plantations (P. elliottii and Cunninghamia lanceolata Hook). Soil sterilization was designed to test plant phosphorus (P) acquisition strategy with and without native soil fungal communities. Soi
