Zearalenone and its metabolites, α-zearalenol and β-zearalenol, demonstrate estradiol-like activity and disrupt physiological functions in animals. This article evaluates the carryover of zearalenone and its selected metabolites from the digesta to intestinal walls (along the entire intestines) in pre-pubertal gilts exposed to low doses of zearalenone over long periods of time. The term "carryover" describes the transfer of mycotoxins from feed to edible tissues, and it was used to assess the risk of mycotoxin exposure for consumers. The experimental gilts with body weight of up to 25 kg were …

AIMS: To determine the modulating action of some metal ions (Zn+2, Fe+2, Cu+2) on gene expression of enzymes related to fungal growth and accumulation of the mycotoxins aflatoxin and zearalenone.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The effect of the metal ions, as single or mixed treatments, was observed in submerged cultures of toxigenic Aspergillus flavus or Fusarium graminearum, which produce the mycotoxins aflatoxin or zearalenone, respectively. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay results showed that the single metals Zn+2 or Cu+2 stimulated aflatoxin accumulation while Cu+2 or Fe+2 stimulated zearale…

Fungal species produce various secondary metabolites with carcinogenic and genotoxic properties, including aflatoxins, ochratoxins, fumonisins, sterigmatocystin, and griseofulvin. Acute or chronic exposure to these mycotoxins through contaminated food and feed can cause DNA damage, chromosomal instability, and epigenetic changes, ultimately leading to cancer. This review focuses on IARC-classified carcinogenic mycotoxins and their contribution to cancer development by disrupting the DNA damage response (DDR), thereby affecting apoptosis, cell cycle regulation, and genomic stability. Current kn…

To ensure human health, mycotoxins in food should be evaluated regularly. Matrix effects (MEs), ultra-trace analysis, and multi-component analysis are major challenges for mycotoxins analysis. The complex nature of sample matrices impedes the accurate detection of multi-mycotoxins, complicating regulatory enforcement. Although widely employed for mycotoxin analysis due to its high sensitivity and broad polarity compatibility, LC-MS/MS is significantly limited by severe MEs. Consequently, robust and highly selective sample clean-up procedures are essential for the analysis of multi-mycotoxins i…

BACKGROUND: Bentonites, as a clay mineral, serve in pig farms as adsorbents of toxic substances. They are mainly used to reduce the negative impact of mycotoxins to maintain the performance and health status of animals. The new genotypes of pigs are highly sensitive to a range of antinutrients, including mycotoxins. Currently, attention is focused on more effective adsorbents of mycotoxins with a higher adsorption capacity. Such materials are in great demand among feed manufacturers. However, there is a concern that these new materials may also adsorb too many essential nutrients and decrease …

Foodborne mycotoxins are toxic metabolites that are produced by fungi. The widespread contamination of food and its by-products by mycotoxins is a global food safety problem that potentially threatens public health and other exposed animals. Most foodborne mycotoxins induce hepatotoxicity. However, only few studies have investigated the regulatory mechanisms of mitochondrial calcium transport monomers in mycotoxin-induced hepatotoxicity. Therefore, according to relevant studies and reports, this review suggests that intracellular Ca(2 +) homeostasis and mitochondrial Ca(2 +) uniporter are invo…

Early diagnosis of fungal infections in crops is essential for mitigating yield losses, yet most detection strategies rely on destructive assays that are incompatible with in situ monitoring. Among major fungal pathogens, Fusarium species pose a significant threat to global agriculture and produce the phytotoxin fusaric acid (FA), a key biomarker of early infection. Here, we develop a non-destructive, ratiometric optical nanosensor that integrates aggregation-induced emissive carbon dots within a zeolitic imidazolate framework (CD@ZIF-8) for selective FA detection in living plants. By rational

Mycotoxins are compounds produced by certain types of fungi, and the mycotoxin one of the most most frequently found in the tested cereal samples is deoxynivalenol (DON), naturally-occurring mycotoxin produced by Fusarium spp. An animal sensitive to the effects of this mycotoxin is the pig due to the diet containing primarily cereals and the structure of a digestive system, which causes DON to be quickly absorbed unchanged into the bloodstream and partially metabolized in the liver. An important aspect when considering the toxicity of DON is the occurrence of its modified forms, which can be t…

Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas) production is threatened by Fusarium root rot, which can lead to substantial yield losses and contamination with mycotoxins and phytotoxins. This study investigated the production of mycotoxins by different Fusarium species and isolates in vitro and in vivo, as well as furanoterpenoid compounds produced by sweetpotato in response to Fusarium infection and wounding. Among 37 Fusarium isolates tested, only four F. proliferatum isolates (AS050, AS116, JS603, and NM229) produced significant levels of fumonisins B1 and B2 in sweetpotato roots, with NM229 exhibiting the…

Few reports are on the application of cold plasma (CP) for mold and mycotoxin control in grain. The aim of this study was to evaluate the viability of CP for mycotoxin and mold control in rice grain. Rice grains artificially contaminated with molds or mycotoxins were subjected to CP treatment. The microbial activities of Aspergillus niger, Rhizopus oryzae, Penicillium verrucosum and Fusarium graminearum were significantly inhibited by CP treatment. The maximal reduction of DON and OTA were 61.25 % and 55.64 %, respectively. The electrical conductivity and malondialdehyde content in rice grain …

Mycotoxin exposure from food occurs globally but is more common in hot humid environments, especially in low-income settings, and might affect pregnancy outcomes. This study aimed to synthesize the evidence from epidemiological studies on the relationship between maternal or fetal exposure to different mycotoxins and the occurrence of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Multiple databases were systematically searched up to December 2018 to identify studies that assessed the association between mycotoxin exposure in pregnant women or fetuses and at least one pregnancy outcome. Studies were appraised an…

Mycotoxins are fungal secondary metabolites that have been associated with severe toxic effects to vertebrates produced by many important phytopathogenic and food spoilage fungi including Aspergillus, Penicillium, Fusarium, and Alternaria species. The contamination of foods and animal feeds with mycotoxins is a worldwide problem. We reviewed various control strategies to prevent the growth of mycotoxigenic fungi as well as to inhibit mycotoxin biosynthesis including pre-harvest (resistance varieties, field management and the use of biological and chemical agents), harvest management, and post-…

Two of five pregnant rabbits gavaged with purified fumonisin B1 at 1.75 mg/kg/day died, one after 9 and one after 13 doses. Microscopic examination revealed focal small hemorrhages in cerebral white matter in both animals, with malacia and hemorrhage also present in the hippocampus of one. The lesions were bilateral. Both animals also had marked degeneration of renal tubule epithelium and of hepatocytes. Apoptosis was the dominant degenerative change in kidney and liver. Fumonisin is known to cause leukoencephalomalacia and hemorrhage in equines, but CNS changes associated with exposure to fum

A number of species of fungi were isolated from millet (Pennisetum typhoides Staph and Hubb) and grain sorghum (Sorghum vulgare Pers) obtained from the households of patients suffering from onyalai. Several proved to be toxic to rats and chickens, including Phoma sorghina (Sacc.) which was the predominating fungus. Cultures of P. sorghina grown on maize and wheat were added to standard rations at concentrations of 5-30%. When fed to day-old New Hampshire chickens, the majority died within 4 days, exhibiting traces of blood on the beak and the cloaca. Rats given 10% or more of the mouldered mat

Maize is susceptible to mycotoxin contamination throughout harvesting, storage, and processing, which poses potential risks to human health and livestock production. This review summarizes the occurrence, toxicological mechanisms, and contamination dynamics of major mycotoxins commonly detected in maize, including aflatoxins (AFs), ochratoxin A (OTA), zearalenone (ZEN), fumonisins (FBs), and deoxynivalenol (DON). We further examine their distribution and accumulation patterns across the maize production chain, from pre-harvest to processing. During the pre-harvest period, toxin accumulation is…

Mycotoxins are widespread environmental contaminants whose global prevalence and ecological impacts are intensifying due to climate change. However, their sublethal effects on wildlife populations and ecosystem stability remain significantly underexplored. Laboratory studies have demonstrated that mycotoxins induce epigenetic toxicity, but the implications of these molecular findings for populations and ecosystems are not yet fully understood. This review synthesizes current knowledge regarding mycotoxin-induced epigenetic modifications and evaluates their effects across multiple levels of bio…
