INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Ingrown nails are a common problem, seen mostly in young adults. Also known as onychcrypotisis, this condition typically affects the great toenail. Four stages have been defined according to the severity and duration of the condition, and treatment varies from conservative to surgical techniques depending on the stage. We present our experience with this condition, describing the characteristics of our population and surgical treatment, in particular the super U technique.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a retrospective, descriptive study of patients with ingrown g…

A 23-year-old man consulted his general practitioner with discoloured nails. The nails showed the typical pattern of half and half nails or Lindsay's nails. This condition sometimes accompanies renal failure or thyroid disease and must be differentiated from Terry's nails, psoriatic nails and onychomycosis. Blood tests showed no underlying condition in this patient.

Onychoheterotopia is an uncommon condition in which nail tissue is found beyond the common nail unit of the digits of the hands and feet, most often on the fifth digit of the hand. It represents an extra and independent nail that can be present either congenitally, or more commonly, acquired following trauma. The exact pathogenesis of the congenital type is undetermined. We report a 25-year-old male with multiple congenital ectopic nails of the toes since birth, which has not been reported before.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to compare the functional results of dynamic compression plates (DCP) and interlocked retrograde intramedullary nails (IRIN) used for the treatment of humeral shaft nonunions.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-six patients (12 males, 14 females; mean age, 42.8 years; range 21 to 61 years) who underwent surgical treatment of humeral shaft nonunion either with DCP (n=13) or IRIN (n=13) between October 1999 and January 2008, were retrospectively analyzed. Treatment consisted of removing previous implants and DCP or IRIN fixation with additional autogenous bone grafts for a…

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a widespread skin disorder in which nail involvement is a common symptom. Many psoriatic patients have nail changes … sent in 83 patients (78.3%) with psoriasis. The most common nail abnormality observed on both fingernails and toenails was subungual hyperkeratosis. Hyperkeratosis, onychorrexis, and discoloration of nail plates were observed significantly more often on toenails. Pitting and longitudinal ridges were significantly more frequent on fingernails. Patients w …

Black nails caused by Proteus mirabilis were seen in a motor mechanic and in a petrol pump attendant. Proteus mirabilis is a gram-negative bacillus that generates hydrogen sulfide. This compound reacts with traces of metals in the nail plate such as zinc, nickel, cobalt, iron, manganese, tin, copper and lead. Metal sulfides blacken the nail plate. The protracted course of the discoloration over months corresponds to the slow reactions of metals with hydrogen sulfide. The disappearance of the blackening after topical treatment with chinosol, tincture of iodine and chloramphenicol solution suppo…

BACKGROUND: There are four main types of ingrown nail. These are distal nail embedding, juvenile (subcutaneous) ingrown nail, hypertrophy of the lateral nail fold (lip), and pincer nail.
OBJECTIVE: The etiology of pincer nail may be hereditary or acquired. The mechanism of the most common form, an enlarged base of the distal bony phalanx, is discussed.
METHODS: Use of roentgenogram and magnetic resonance imaging highlights exophytes of the base and dorsal hyperostosis of the distal phalanx.
RESULTS: Global assessment may lead in mild cases to medical therapy. Usually, however, the lateral m

BACKGROUND: Pincer nails are a kind of nail deformity characterized by a transverse overcurvature of the nail that increases along the longitudinal axis. Alteration of the shape of the underlying distal phalanx due to osteophyte formation at the apex may be a cause of pincer nails. This causes widening of the proximal matrix and as a result secondary torque in the distal nail plate leading to the typical appearance. Apart from conservative treatment, several surgical techniques have been proposed in the past.
METHODS: This article presents a new surgical approach in the treatment of recalcitr…
