'Hit me like a brick wall': women's accounts of balancing cancer survivorship with fertility concerns while dealing with gynaecological cancer.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the impact of gynaecological cancer on women's expectations for motherhood, their concerns regarding their fertility, and how they negotiated these concerns in the survivorship context. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 42 Australian women with gynaecological cancer, aged between 27 to 53 years, who were on average five years post-diagnosis (range 1-10 years). Thematic discourse analysis, from a material-discursive-intrapsychic approach, was used to explore how women narrated their fertility-related concerns in the broader social and health

Impaired information integration contributes to communication difficulty in corticobasal syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the cognitive and neural correlates of discourse impairment in corticobasal syndrome (CBS). BACKGROUND: Difficulty communicating is a frequent clinical manifestation in patients with CBS. However, the mechanisms underlying this disabling problem are not well understood. METHODS: Twenty patients with CBS and 8 healthy seniors narrated a picture story. Narratives were analyzed for maintenance of the narrative theme, identification of the overall point of the story (global connectedness), and connectedness between consecutive events (local connectedness). Virtual reality exergames for enhancing engagement in stroke rehabilitation: A narrative review.

This narrative review focuses on upper-limb stroke rehabilitation and virtual reality (VR) exergaming interventions that seek to facilitate the rehabilitation process. We examine exergaming interventions from the perspective of diegesis ("narration"), an aspect often overlooked despite its significance in neuronal rehabilitation. The importance of diegesis and narrative engagement in rehabilitation exergames started becoming clear only recently, with findings in the field of neurology underscoring the impact of purpose-driven task engagement on neuroplasticity. We begin this review by examinin…

Some personal reflections on prison medical care.

This is a personal account of medical practices and healthcare behind bars, which draws on direct experiences and narrations from fellow prisoners, accumulated during eleven years in custody. It touches on issues of the relationship of medical professionals with the torture of detenus, the anarchy of everyday prison medication, frailty and death among older inmates and the proposals and prospects for prison healthcare reform. It sees a need for systemic change, but the prognosis is not optimistic.

Genetics of infertility and "assisted fertilization" in the Bible: The case of Abraham and his family.

Couple infertility is a very ancient medical condition. One of the first descriptions of familial infertility/subfertility is contained in t … ention. In this paper, we reconstruct the pedigree of Abraham's family on the basis of the biblical narration, which is rich enough of medical details to allow to reconstruct a plausible medical/genetic reason for the cases of infertility reported therein.

Bite by a dog under provocation: is it free from risk?

There is a common belief that rabid dogs bite without provocation, hence a dog bite under provocation is free from the risk of rabies. This is not always true as is evident from the case report narrated below. Here in this article, a man of 38 years was bitten by a dog under provocation. He developed rabies 4 months after the bite and subsequently died. Autopsy revealed Negri bodies from the brain tissue.

'I felt like I just belonged': urban multiculture and black Irish migrants in post-war Britain.

This article reevaluates historians' understanding of the Irish in post-war Britain from the perspective of a previously unresearched population, black and mixed-race Irish migrants. Writing on the Irish in Britain has lingered on themes such as stereotyping, discrimination, and ethnic profiling. More widely, some historians have framed Irish emigration and the diaspora around motifs of exile and reluctant departure, while others have highlighted the liberating potential of departure. Oral histories with black Irish migrants fall firmly into the latter, emancipatory camp, depicting urban, mult

Kinship and Intimate Partner Violence Against Married Women in Ghana: A Qualitative Exploration.

In African societies, kinship ties determine how women are socialized, their access to power and wealth, as well as custody of children, often considered important factors in married women's experience of intimate partner violence (IPV). Yet studies that examine how kinship norms influence IPV are scant. Using in-depth interviews collected from women identifying with both matrilineal and patrilineal descent systems, we explored differences in Ghanaian women's experiences of IPV in both kin groups. Results show that while IPV occurs across matrilineal and patrilineal societies, all women in pat

Benjamin Waterhouse (1754-1846) and the riddle of Amos Babcock.

The late Dr Henry R Viets (1890-1969) suggested in 1940 that the author of A Journal of a Young Man of Massachusetts was Amos G Babcock. He also showed that Benjamin Waterhouse edited the manuscript. A similar journal, The Prisoner's Memoirs of Dartmoor Prison by Charles Andrews, is also described and contrasted. The career of Professor Waterhouse is narrated in relation to the medical politics at that time in New England: a possible explanation for Babcock's anonymous authorship is given.

Defining joy after a genetic diagnosis: A narrative inquiry.

Research on patient and family experiences often focuses on the challenges associated with receiving a genetic diagnosis, including feelings of uncertainty, grief, and emotional distress. Positive or encouraging aspects of the diagnostic journey are less well described. This study aimed to identify and describe ways in which patients and their families experience joy after receiving a genetic diagnosis using a narrative methodology. Semi-structured interviews and field observations of family activities were performed with three families recruited from a pediatric genetics clinic. These methods

Particularizing the picture: Features and uses of instantiation stories told by clinicians doing autism diagnosis.

Diagnosis is the narrative process through which professional clinicians transform experiences of illness and disability into disease (Hunter, 1991; Jutel, 2009; Kleinman et al., 1978). Maynard and Turowetz (2017a) found that the narrative structure for autism diagnosis consists of two primary story types concerning the conduct of children under assessment: (1) tendency stories about propensities or quantifications of behavior, and (2) instantiation stories that describe single instances of conduct occurring at a specific time or place. Instantiation stories represent a mechanism by which clin

A critique of narrative reviews of the evidence-base for ECT in depression.

There has been recent debate regarding the efficacy of electroconvulsive therapy in the treatment of depression. This has been based on narrative reviews that contradict existing systematic reviews and meta-analyses. In this special article, we highlight the mistakes that occur when interpreting evidence using narrative reviews, as opposed to conventional systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

"Through blackening pools of blood": Trauma and Translation in Robert Graves's The Anger of Achilles.

The Anger of Achilles, Robert Graves' 1959 translation of Homer's Iliad, has been variously dismissed by classical scholars as an 'outrageous sortie into the field of translation' (Aldrich 1961) and a work of 'sheer egotism' (Rexine 1962), marred by its author's 'scattered yapping' (Dimmock 1960). And yet, it can be read with greater understanding if we approach it not merely as a literary anomaly, but as a refraction of Graves' experience of 'Shell Shock,' or PTSD, following his front line service during the First World War. This paper proposes that the act of translation can itself be cathar

Narrative Rehabilitation: Manifestation of Chinese and Western Reform Ideals and Practices.

The existing literature has shown that in Western penal systems there is often an official demand for narrative rehabilitation during treatment programs, and has criticized the requirement for a narrative change to correspond with the "judicial-correctional truth." This study is based on participant observation in a male prison in mainland China. Through a comparative lens, this paper found that offenders in Western treatment programs are required to demonstrate a change in narrative identity that is immersed in details from their personal history and from judicial discourse, whereas the Chine
