Colorectal cancer in patients with esophageal adenocarcinoma.

The incidence of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and gastric cardia has been rising rapidly in Western Europe and the United States, especially among white males. Previous reports, based on case series, have suggested an association between colonic neoplasia and Barrett's esophagus, a metaplastic condition of the lower esophagus that can lead to adenocarcinoma. We analyzed cancer incidence data from 1973 to 1989 from the nine population-based registries of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program of the United States National Cancer Institute to investigate this association, usi

Trends of gastric cancer burdens attributable to risk factors in China from 2000 to 2050.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of gastric cancer (GC) decreased in past decades, which was thought largely attributable to risk factors control, yet China still accounts for 44% of global GC burdens. We aimed to estimate changing trajectories of proportions of GC burdens attributable to modifiable risk factors from 2000 to 2050 in China, to inform future targeted preventive strategies. METHODS: The incidence and new cases of GC were predicted to 2050 using Bayesian age-period-cohort model based on incidence data by anatomical subsites drawn from 682 cancer registries from National Central Cancer R

Aggressive Digital Papillary Adenocarcinoma: Population-Based Analysis of Incidence, Demographics, Treatment, and Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: As a rare cutaneous malignancy, epidemiologic and outcomes data for aggressive digital papillary adenocarcinoma (ADPA) are limited and no treatment guidelines exist. OBJECTIVE: To provide a population-based study of ADPA incidence and outcomes with a subgroup comparison of patients with localized versus regional disease. METHODS: Data from 18 registries within the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program were examined for patients with ADPA (1995-2013) to provide demographic- and cancer-related information, and to calculate race- and

A nationwide survey on the prevalence of asbestos-related lung cancer in Japan.

The nationwide prevalence of asbestos-related lung cancer (ARLC) needs to be accurately estimated to adequately operate a compensation subsidy program for patients with ARLC. In the present study, we aimed to estimate the proportion of patients with ARLC among patients with primary lung cancer according to the criteria established in the Japanese national compensation system, and described the characteristics and distribution of ARLC,. All facilities that treated patients diagnosed with lung cancer in 2016 were requested to submit computed tomography (CT) images of ten patients who were random

Incidence Trends of Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer in Germany: A Registry-Based Study From 2003 to 2023.

Motivated by studies on early-onset colorectal cancer (EO CRC, below 50 years) from the United States (US) and elsewhere, this study aimed to provide national incidence trends of EO CRC for Germany. We retrieved colorectal cancer cases (ICD-10 codes C18-C20) using pooled data from German cancer registries with high-quality data. Appendix (C18.1) was excluded from the main analyses and investigated separately. We calculated age-standardised incidence rates (ASR) by calendar year, age group, sex, tumour site, histological subtype, tumour size, grading and estimated corresponding average annual p

Temporal trends in age- and stage-specific incidence of colorectal adenocarcinomas in Germany.

BACKGROUND: A national colorectal cancer (CRC) screening programme was launched in 2002 in Germany. A comprehensive evaluation of the programme effectiveness using real-world data is still lacking. In addition, there are regional reports on increasing colorectal cancer incidence in younger populations. Therefore, we aimed to describe and compare the overall, age- and stage-specific incidence trends for colorectal, colon and rectal cancer. METHODS: We used data from seven population-based cancer registries in Germany. We report absolute and relative changes in incidence rates between the early

Burkitt's lymphoma in the USA: cases reported to the American Burkitt Lymphoma Registry compared with population-based incidence and mortality data.

Since 1971, the American Burkitt Lymphoma Registry (ABLR) has been collecting clinical, epidemiological and laboratory data on patients with Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) diagnosed in the USA. Although the 256 confirmed ABLR cases have the advantage of uniform pathological review, the ABLR is a relatively 'passive' registry, with the majority of cases being submitted by interested physicians. To determine the pattern of BL in the USA on a population basis, we analysed incidence and survival data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program of the National Cancer Institute (NCI)

Cervical cancer screening history prior to a diagnosis of cervical cancer in Danish women aged 60 years and older-A national cohort study.

The incidence and mortality of cervical cancer are high in Danish women aged 60 years and older who are about to exit the cervical cancer screening program. The present study aimed to describe the screening history in women ≥60 years old, diagnosed with cervical cancer in Denmark, 2009-2013. We retrieved information on cases of cervical cancer and previous cervical cancer screening from national registries. During the study period, a total of 1907 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer, 574 (30.1%) of which were ≥60 years old. The majority of women were diagnosed with squamous cell carcinom

Association of county-level socioeconomic status with meningioma incidence and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Prior literature suggests that individual socioeconomic status (SES) may influence incidence, treatments, and survival of brain tumor cases. We aim to conduct the first national study to evaluate the association between US county-level SES and incidence, treatment, and survival in meningioma. METHODS: The Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States analytic dataset, which combines data from CDC's National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) and National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program, was used to identify meningioma cases from 2006 to …

Epidemiological trends, prognostic factors, and survival outcomes of synchronous brain metastases from 2015 to 2019: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Brain metastases (BM) constitute a significant cause of oncological mortality. Statistics on the incidence of BM are limited because of the lack of systematic nationwide reporting. We report the incidence of synchronous brain metastases (sBM), defined as BM identified at the time of primary cancer diagnosis from 2015 to 2019 using National Cancer Institute's (NCI's) Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program database. METHODS: We identified 1,872,057 patients with malignancies diagnosed between 2015 and 2019 from the SEER 17 Registries database, including 35,986 (1.9%) pa

Developing a Collaborative, Team-Based Smoking Cessation Treatment Program in an Outpatient Oncology Setting.

PURPOSE: Because clinical specialists often lack time and training to address secondary health issues such as smoking cessation, the National Cancer Institute Cancer Center Cessation Initiative (C3I) has mobilized cancer centers to develop systems for treating patients' tobacco dependence. METHODS: One university-based cancer center was able to develop a program that formalized smoking treatment using a collaborative, multidisciplinary care team with overlapping expertise in cancer care, medication management, and tobacco cessation. Program planners delivered tobacco cessation services in the

Improving the effectiveness of SUD treatment through a national registry.

CONTEXT: Recent research into the effectiveness of abstinence-based substance use disorder (SUD) treatment indicates that there has not been a substantial improvement since the Drug Abuse Treatment Outcome Study research in 1993. Research into medication-supported treatments for SUD are hindered by a dearth of real-world longitudinal outcome studies. Patient registries have dramatically improved survival rates in many diseases by providing researchers with longitudinal data on a broad spectrum of patients undergoing a variety of treatments. Policy prescription: We recommend the creation of a n

Incidence of Kaposi's sarcoma and mycosis fungoides in the United States including Puerto Rico, 1973-81.

The incidence of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) was examined with the use of data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program of the National Cancer Institute. KS is a manifestation of the recent epidemic of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) that has occurred particularly among homosexual men. The incidence of KS in 1973-79 was found to be higher (0.29 male and 0.07 female cases/100,000/yr) than is usually cited for the pre-AIDS KS incidence rates. Collectively, the 9 SEER registries in the United States showed only a slight increase in the incidence of KS between 1973-7

Leveraging Radiotherapy Data for Precision Oncology: Veterans Affairs Granular Radiotherapy Information Database.

PURPOSE: Despite the frequency with which patients with cancer receive radiotherapy, integrating radiation oncology data with other aspects of the clinical record remains challenging because of siloed and variable software systems, high data complexity, and inconsistent data encoding. Recognizing these challenges, the Veterans Affairs (VA) National Radiation Oncology Program (NROP) is developing Granular Radiotherapy Information Database (GRID), a platform and pipeline to combine radiotherapy data across the VA with the goal of both better understanding treatment patterns and outcomes and enha

INTRODUCTION:  Cervical cancer is a major public health issue in Algeria, where a national screening program based on the Pap smear was launched in 2001. However, its effectiveness has never been rigorously evaluated. This study aimed to assess the impact of the screening program on cervical cancer incidence in the province of Oran between 1996 and 2020. METHODS:  Data were extracted from the Oran Cancer Registry and included all cervical cancer cases diagnosed between 1996 and 2020. Age-standardized incidence rates based on the world standard population were calculated, and
