Mohs micrographic surgery for penoscrotal malignancy.

Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) has been shown to reduce recurrence rates when used to excise many different mucocutaneous neoplasms, especially of the head and neck. The low recurrence rates are due to careful microscopic evaluation of the horizontal and vertical surgical margins. This article discusses the utility and limitations of MMS in controlling neoplasia of the male genitalia. Specific penoscrotal neoplasias discussed in this article include invasive and in situ squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, extramammary Paget disease, and granular cell tumor.

Morphology of neoplastic lesions in the clitoral and prepucial gland of the F334 rat.

Three hundred fifty-nine neoplasms of the prepucial and clitoral glands of F344 rats were reviewed to classify the different types of tumors in relation to the normal anatomy and histology of the glands. Most tumors originated from the acinar of ductal cells, while only one tumor could be found originating from the mesenchymal tissue. They were classified as adenomas, adenocarcinomas, papillomas, squamous cell or basal cell carcinomas, and mixed cell carcinomas with different structural formations. Only one tumor metastasized to the lung.

Reduction of NOTCH1 expression pertains to maturation abnormalities of keratinocytes in squamous neoplasms.

Notch is a transmembrane receptor functioning in the determination of cell fate. Abnormal Notch signaling promotes tumor development, showing either oncogenic or tumor suppressive activity. The uncertainty about the exact role of Notch signaling, partially, stems from inconsistencies in descriptions of Notch expression in human cancers. Here, we clarified basal-cell dominant expression of NOTCH1 in squamous epithelium. NOTCH1 was downregulated in squamous neoplasms of oral mucosa, esophagus and uterine cervix, compared with the normal basal cells, although the expression tended to be retained

Aspiration biopsy cytology of primary cutaneous tumors.

Primary cutaneous neoplasms may undergo fine needle aspiration during the workup of patients with suspected metastatic disease. Such aspirates present a wide range of epithelial and nonepithelial proliferations that must be separated from more common metastatic deposits. The majority of primary cutaneous tumors are composed of squamous or basaloid cells that can be confused with metastatic squamous cell carcinoma. In addition, primary cutaneous lymphomas and mesenchymal tumors morphologically overlap their more common systemic or metastatic counterparts in appearance. Both clinical and cytolog

Monocyte IL-2Ralpha expression is associated with thrombosis and the JAK2V617F mutation in myeloproliferative neoplasms.

The development of bone marrow fibrosis and thrombosis are main causes of morbidity in essential thrombocythemia (ET). Monocyte activation has been associated to the production of fibrosis-related cytokines and pro-thrombotic factors. The aim of this study was to identify new markers of monocyte activation in Phi-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms and to search for their relationship with clinical features. Forty-five patients comprising 30 ET, eight myelofibrosis and seven polycythemia vera were included. We evaluated the alpha subunit of IL-2 receptor (CD25) on monocytes, basal and LPS-in

MYB RNA detection by in situ hybridisation has high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is one of the most common primary salivary gland cancers. ACC has several benign and malignant mimics amongst salivary gland neoplasms. An accurate diagnosis of ACC is essential for optimal management of the patients and their follow-up. Upregulation of MYB has been described in 85-90% of ACC, but not in other salivary gland neoplasms. In ACC, MYB upregulation can occur as a result of a genetic rearrangement t(6;9) (q22-23;p23-24), MYB copy number variation (CNV), or enhancer hijacking of MYB. All mechanisms of MYB upregulation result in increased RNA transcripti

[Surgical treatment of malignant lip tumors. Personal experience].

The malignant tumours of the lip account for nearly 1-2% of the cervicofacial neoplasms. These lesions are frequently spinous cell carcinomas and basal cell carcinomas (25% of all oral cancers). The spinous cell carcinoma is mainly located in the lower lip, the basal cell carcinoma is more common in the upper lip. The incidence of lip cancer in males is much high than in females. The etiopathogenesis of these lesions is connected with exposure to sun, smoking, genetics predisposition (mutation of the p53 suppressor factor) and with the evolution of precancerous lesions (radiodermatitis, chroni

Metastatic basal cell carcinoma: a clinicopathologic study of seventeen cases.

Basal cell carcinoma is a common cutaneous neoplasm that rarely metastasizes. We studied the clinical and pathologic features of 17 patients with metastatic basal cell carcinoma as recorded in the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP). Sixteen of the patients were male, and as far as it could be determined, all were white. The most frequent site of metastasis was lung (9 cases), followed by bone (5), lymph nodes (4), liver (3), spleen (1), and adrenal gland (1). Thirteen of the patients had metastatic lesions involving only one organ system. Mean survival time after metastasi

Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Tattoo: A Man With a Tattoo-Associated Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Review of Benign Tumors, Lymphoid Conditions, and Malignant Neoplasms Occurring Within a Tattoo.

Tattoos, a common form of body adornment, have been associated with numerous cutaneous complications. These include not only benign neoplasms and malignant tumors but also lymphoid conditions occurring within the tattoo. Tattoo-associated dermatomyofibroma, epidermoid inclusion cyst, hemangioma, lipoma, milia, and pilomatricoma are benign lesions that have each only been described in one individual. However, there are only a few reports of persons with either dermatofibroma or seborrheic keratoses within their tattoo; also, benign nevi within a tattoo may be more common than the number of repo

Basal cell adenoma of the sublingual gland.

Salivary gland tumors constitute about 3% to 4% of all head and neck neoplasms. Approximately 80% originate in the parotid gland, and they rarely present in the sublingual gland; however, a disproportionately large majority of sublingual gland tumors are malignant. Basal cell adenoma is a benign epithelial salivary gland tumor that appears to have unique histologic characteristics, different from those of mixed tumors, and has a predilection for development in the parotid and minor salivary glands. No case has ever been reported as arising from the sublingual gland in the otolaryngology litera

Basal cell adenocarcinoma of the minor salivary gland: a case report.

Basal cell adenocarcinoma (BCA) is an uncommon salivary gland neoplasm. The majority of salivary gland tumors are located in the parotid gland, while only a few involves the minor salivary gland of the oral cavity. Pathological diagnosis is important to differentiate BCA from other neoplasms, as the prognosis of the diseases is significantly different. In this article, we present a 41-year-old-male with BCA involving the upper labial mucosa.

Imiquimod and lymphatic field clearance: a new hypothesis based on a remote immune action on skin cancer.

Basal cell carcinoma and actinic keratosis are frequent neoplasms. Topical treatments include the recently approved imiquimod cream. We describe here the case of a 68-year-old man with multiple actinic keratosis on the forehead, upper trunk and on the left cheek. In addition, an exulcerated basal cell carcinoma was observed. The patient was advised only to treat lesions on the forehead with imiquimod cream. This resulted in complete clearance of actinic keratosis within 6 weeks. At follow-up, a planned surgical excision of the basal cell carcinoma and actinic keratosis on the cheek was carried

Angiosarcoma of the scalp associated with Xeroderma pigmentosum.

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare autosomal recessive genodermatosis associated with hypersensitivity to ultraviolet light due to defects in Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) repair. These patients have more than a 1000-fold increased risk of developing skin cancers. Although multiple cutaneous malignancies are common, the simultaneous occurrence of angiosarcoma and basal cell carcinoma is a rare phenomenon. We report a case of a 25-year-old male with XP with angiosarcoma scalp and basal cell carcinoma of face and occiput and discuss the treatment of this aggressive neoplasm with a review of the

Lepromatous leprosy, melanoma, and basal cell carcinoma: clinical-histopathologic association.

Cutaneous neoplasms frequently occur in leprosy, but there are few reports of the coexistence of leprosy and basal cell carcinoma in the same lesion. This case reports a 49-year-old male with an ulcerated plaque on the right lateral nasal wall, bright papules on the sternal region, and a blackened plaque on the right temporal region. The nasal and temporal lesions were diagnosed by histopathology as basal cell carcinoma and melanoma, respectively. The sternal lesions were excised with the repair of the "dog ear" which histopathological examination showed macrophages in the dermis parasitized w

Is cutaneous leishmaniasis a risk factor for basal cell carcinoma?

BACKGROUND: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common epithelial neoplasm of skin. Risk factors for the development of BCC include intermittent intense sun exposure, radiation therapy, family history of BCC, immune suppression and fair complexion, especially red hair. It can originate in scars like small pox, vaccination, chicken pox or surgical scars. OBJECTIVE AND CONCLUSION: We present a case of basal cell carcinoma arising in a leishmania scar on the nose, sixty years after the primary lesion. Although rare, BCC's have arisen in leishmania scars. Thus the possibility of basal cell car

Basal cell ameloblastoma of mandible: a rare case report with review.

Ameloblastoma is a slow-growing benign neoplasm that has a strong tendency to local invasion and that can grow to be quite large without metastasizing. Rare examples of distant metastasis of an ameloblastoma in lungs or regional lymph nodes do exist. It has an aggressive and recurrent course and is rarely metastatic. Radiographically it shares common features with other lesions such as the giant cell tumor, aneurysmal bone cyst, and renal cell carcinoma metastasis; a definitive diagnosis can only be made with histopathology. Basal cell ameloblastoma is believed to be the rarest histologic subt

The role of sunlight and DNA repair in melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer. The xeroderma pigmentosum paradigm.

BACKGROUND AND DESIGN: The frequency of melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer is increasing rapidly in the United States. However, the linkage of these cancers to sun exposure has been questioned because of differences in anatomic site distribution. To obtain insights into the development of these skin cancers, we examined reports of 132 patients with xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), an inherited cancer-prone, DNA repair-deficient disorder with marked clinical and laboratory UV hypersensitivity. RESULTS: Malignant skin neoplasms were present in 70% of the patients with XP at a median age of 8 years

Preoperative brush and impression cytology in ocular surface squamous neoplasms.

OBJECTIVE: Preoperative cytologic diagnoses of ocular surface squamous neoplasms were evaluated and compared with histologic diagnoses. STUDY DESIGN: Impression cytology (Millipore filter paper) and brush cytology were applied to 32 patients who had conjunctival neoplasms. Papanicolaou-stained cytologic preparations and hematoxylin and eosin-stained histologic sections were examined by light microscopy. RESULTS: The brush technique was used on 27 patients; impression cytology was applied in 5 cases. Cytologic and histologic diagnoses were concordant in 26 cases. Squamous cell carcinoma or ca

Skin Basal Cell Carcinosarcoma in a Trichoblastic Guise-Molecular Characterization of a Novel Entity Mimicking a Pyoderma Gangrenosum.

Basal cell carcinosarcomas (BCCSs) are rare, aggressive biphasic epithelial-mesenchymal neoplasms typically occurring in elderly patients. Their nonspecific clinical presentation may mimic inflammatory disorders, necessitating histopathological examination. We characterize a novel cutaneous BCCS with prominent trichoblastic differentiation, clinically mimicking ulcerative pyoderma gangrenosum. Although morphologically resembling trichoblastic carcinosarcoma (TBCS), the tumor retained a BCC-associated genetic signature, supporting a basal cell rather than a primary trichoblastic lineage. We the
