There is a broad spectrum of primary pelvic retroperitoneal masses in adults that demonstrate characteristic epidemiologic and histopathologic features and natural histories. These masses may be classified into five distinct subgroups using a pattern-based approach that takes anatomic distribution and certain imaging characteristics into account, allowing greater accuracy in their detection and characterization and helping to optimize patient management. The five groups are cystic (serous and mucinous epithelial neoplasms, pelvic lymphangioma, tailgut cyst, ancient schwannoma), vascular or hyp

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon fibroblastic tumor occurring preferentially in the pleura, with a variable clinical course. SFT can arise also in numerous extrathoracic sites and very rarely in the female genital tract, with only scarce reports of uterine SFT. We reported a new uterine SFT arising in a 45-year-old woman, and we performed a systematic review of SFT cases of the uterine corpus interrogating the electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus. We identified only 13 patients diagnosed with SFT of the uterine corpus, including our one. Complete clinical workout

We present a case of fibrous pseudotumor of the epididymis and tunica vaginalis which is one of the rarest paratesticular tumors. Fibrous pseudotumor presents as a solid scrotal mass with normal serum markers. Pathological examination is the only reliable way to make the diagnosis with these tumors exhibiting characteristic macroscopic and microscopic features. It is important to recognize this entity since local excision is the treatment of choice and orchiectomy is unnecessary.

Spindle cell lesions of the thyroid gland (T-SCL) are not encountered routinely in clinical practice or in the context of thyroid pathology. They commonly are classified as primary or secondary to metastatic disease. Primary T-SCL can be derivedfromfollicular, C-cell (parafollicular), or mesenchymal components and may be the result of reactive or neoplastic processes, including post-fine-needle aspiration spindle cell nodules, Riedel thyroiditis, solitary fibrous tumor, leiomyoma, peripheral nerve sheath tumor, hyalinizing trabecular tumor, spindle epithelial tumor with thymus-like differentia

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon spindle cell neoplasm of increasing incidence that was originally described to be of pleural origin; however, more recently, SFT has been reported in extrapleural sites, including the orbit, liver, salivary glands, tongue, nose, paranasal sinuses, larynx, retroperitoneum, meninges, and thyroid. The increase in the number of SFTs does not necessarily mean increased incidence of this tumor but rather an increased understanding of this tumor, especially recognition of this tumor in extrapleural locations, which has been aided by immunohistochemical anal

Pediatric fibroblastic and myofibroblastic tumors are a relatively common group of soft-tissue proliferations that are associated with a wide spectrum of clinical behavior. These tumors have been divided into the following categories on the basis of their biologic behavior: benign (eg, myositis ossificans, myofibroma, fibromatosis colli), intermediate-locally aggressive (eg, lipofibromatosis, desmoid fibroma), intermediate-rarely metastasizing (eg, inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors, infantile fibrosarcoma, low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma), and malignant (eg, fibromyxoid sarcoma, adult fibr

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumours (PMTs) are rare neoplasms that secrete fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23), causing tumour-induced osteomalacia (TIO). Histological overlap with juvenile psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (JPOF) can lead to diagnostic difficulty, particularly outside the craniofacial skeleton. A 4-year-old girl presented with a painful forearm swelling. Radiographs demonstrated a fibro-osseous lesion in the radius and biopsy was initially non-diagnostic, leading to a presumptive diagnosis of fibrous dysplasia. Over the next 6 years, the lesion enlarged, and at age 10, the patient

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFT) are very rare mesenchymal neoplasms. While surgery remains a standard treatment for localised disease, effective and long term treatment options for metastatic disease are lacking, making the use of aldoxorubicin a novel and promising systemic treatment in SFTs. We present a 30-year-old male who underwent surgical resection for a solitary fibrous tumour of the right leg. Postoperative imaging revealed metastatic disease in the liver and left upper quadrant. He was initially treated with pazopanib but experienced disease progression after 24 weeks. The patient was

Germline mutations or postzygotic mosaicism in PTEN cause PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome. The hamartomas can occur at the mucocutaneous sites and superficial or deep soft tissue. PTEN hamartomas of soft tissue were initially described in the pediatric population, and therefore, they were considered pediatric lesions. Breast cancer is one of the major diagnostic criteria for Cowden syndrome. We report a 67-year-old female patient with a germline pathogenic variant of PTEN and a remote history of breast cancer who developed metastatic breast carcinoma into a dedifferentiated solitary fibrous tumo

Benign mesenchymoma is an uncommon tumor containing at least two or more differentiated mesenchymal elements in addition to fibrous tissue. The case we presented here is a 60-year-old male who suffered from a superior posterior mediastinal mesenchymal tumor composed predominantly of mature adipose tissue separated by fascicular bundles of spindle cells admixed with cartilage and osseous tissue. The spindle cells were confirmed to be smooth muscle in nature by trichrome Masson stain and immunohistochemical studies, providing a picture consistent with that of benign mesenchymoma. Solitary fibrous tumors are rare neoplasms that originate from mesenchymal tissues and have been found to occur in any site, including the spine and liver. Although most of solitary fibrous tumors have benign features, only 10-20% are malignant and prone to metastasis. No previous reports have described the malignant and metastatic Solitary fibrous tumor arising in both of the liver and thoracic vertebrae. In this article, we present the case of a 60-year-old woman who underwent gross total resection of a meningeal tumor in 2007. She presented 10 years later with a thoracic vertebral mass that

Originally thought to be limited to mesothelial-lined surfaces, solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) has now been reported in numerous extrathoracic sites. The female genital tract is among the rarest reported sites involving SFT, and only a handful of cases have been described. Although features pointing to a more malignant biological behavior have been described, these tumors remain unpredictable in their clinical course. We present a case of primary SFT originating in the vulva of a 45-year-old woman, only the fourth such case and only the ninth case of primary SFT of the female genital tract. The

Solitary fibrous retroperitoneal tumor is rare. We present a case with infiltrative growth in a 56-year-old female patient whose initial symptom was palpable tumor in the lower abdomen. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging indicated a mass in the retroperitoneum under the left kidney with a poorly demarcated infiltrative growth. Surgical findings revealed a gelatinous tumor in the retroperitoneum, which had invaded up to the fatty tissue surrounding the Gerota's fascia and to the fatty tissue surrounding the descending colon. However, as there was no invasion into the Gerota's fa

Endometriosis is a common crippling disease in women of reproductive age. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered the cornerstone radiological technique for both the diagnosis and management of endometriosis. While its sensitivity, especially in deep infiltrating endometriosis, is superior to that of ultrasonography, many sources of false-positive results exist, leading to a lack of specificity. Hypointense lesions or pseudo-lesions on T2-weighted images include anatomical variants, fibrous connective tissues, benign and malignant tumors, feces, surgical materials, and post treatment sc

Almost all neoplasms of the pancreas are derived from pancreatic epithelial components, including the most common pancreatic mass, primary pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Nonepithelial neoplasms comprise only 1%-2% of all pancreatic neoplasms. Although some may arise directly from intrapancreatic elements, many originate from mesenchymal, hematopoietic, or neural elements in the retroperitoneal peripancreatic space and grow into the pancreas. Once these tumors reach a certain size, it can be challenging to identify their origin. Because these manifest at imaging as intrapancreatic mas

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms of fibroblastic origin that mainly arise from the pleura. Although SFTs arising at numerous extrapleural locations have been reported, extrapleural soft tissue SFTs are extremely rare. The diagnosis of SFTs is based on histologic findings. However, given the histological variability of SFTs, immunohistochemical examination becomes important in their diagnosis. Complete surgical resection is the only and a very important prognostic factor and is recommended for the treatment of both benign and malignant SFTs with a curative intent. H

Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS), formerly known as malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH), constitutes a significant subset of soft-tissue sarcomas. Despite its rarity, UPS poses substantial clinical challenges due to its aggressive behavior and propensity for distant metastasis. Here, we report a rare case of high-grade UPS located in the colon, a site exceptionally uncommon for this malignancy, in a 49-year-old woman. The case also underscores the importance of considering UPS in the differential diagnosis of colonic neoplasms. Understanding the clinical and pathological features of

Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma (AFH) is a rare soft tissue tumor that has been associated with EWSR1-CREB1 gene fusion. Outcome in patients with unresectable distant metastases is generally fatal. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) secretion has been described in tumors with EWSR1-CREB1 fusion, and may promote tumor growth due to autocrine stimulation. Tocilizumab is an IL-6 receptor antibody that has potential benefit as a targeted therapy in refractory neoplasms with IL-6 secretion. We describe a child with metastatic AFH with EWSR1-CREB1 fusion and elevated IL-6 whose disease progressed during treatmen

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are a unique group of mesenchymal neoplasms of fibroblastic or myofibroblastic origin and are extremely rare in the oral cavity. The present study reported two additional cases of SFTs in the soft palate, along with the computed tomography characteristics, which demonstrated well-circumscribed soft tissue lesions with marked and homogenous enhancement. Following wide resection, one of the cases showed certain malignant pathological characteristics, including infiltration of mucinous gland, hypercellularity, nuclear atypia and weak positive staining for S-100.
