This review evaluates changes in vascular nomenclature particularly in the category of vascular tumours of intermediate malignancy that includes the various haemangioendotheliomas, Kaposi's sarcoma and giant cell angioblastoma. Recently described entities in this category, including the latter tumour and composite haemangioendothelioma, are described. Several newly characterized vascular tumours not included in recent classifications of vascular tumours are also summarized. These include acquired elastotic haemangioma, symplastic haemangioma, cutaneous epithelioid angiomatous nodule and cutane

The diagnosis and classification of soft tissue sarcomas can pose difficult problems for the histopathologist. Many sarcomas are too poorly differentiated to exhibit morphological features specific enough to define their histogenesis. Using the immunoperoxidase technique with commercially available antisera as a routine adjunct to other diagnostic aids, it is possible to arrive at more accurate diagnoses on which treatment protocols can be based. In addition a better understanding of mesenchymal neoplasms and their origins can be obtained by functional immunohistochemical studies.

Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome (KTS) is a rare congenital vascular-overgrowth disorder within the broader spectrum of PIK3CA-related overgrowth syndromes. Although clinical, radiologic, and orthopedic manifestations are well described, the histologic spectrum of KTS-associated pathology remains under-characterized. Clinicopathologic findings from 21 patients with clinically established KTS were reviewed, including 18 with longitudinal clinical follow-up and 3 consultation cases of rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasms. Cases were identified from institutional pathology and clinical databases, and a

Unexpected vascular lesions may complicate standard laparoscopic pancreatic procedures. We report a case of mucinous cystic neoplasm (MCN) treated with laparoscopic spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy (LSPDP) in which unrecognized immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related periarteritis of the splenic artery caused difficulty during vascular division. A 76-year-old woman underwent LSPDP for MCN. Preoperative computed tomography demonstrated circumferential soft-tissue thickening along the splenic artery. Intraoperatively, the splenic artery was deeply embedded within the pancreatic parenchyma, makin

Primary hepatic angiosarcoma is a rare and rapidly fatal disease. We present the highly unusual identification of this lesion five years after the initial clinical presentation. In 2003, a 32-year-old man presented with abdominal pain, tachycardia, and evidence of hemorrhage. A CT scan showed a hepatic mass with intralesional hemorrhage, intraperitoneal blood, and splenomegaly. The patient was stabilized clinically. Laparoscopic core biopsies demonstrated no malignancy, only findings consistent with an old hemorrhage. Contralateral lobe biopsies revealed normal liver tissue. A metastatic workup

Our aims were to identify pericyte-specific markers for the analysis of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded human tissue samples, and to characterize perivascular myoid cell neoplasms phenotypically. Previously identified pericyte markers failed to distinguish pericytes from other cellular types, such as vascular smooth muscle cells (vSMCs) and fibroblasts, in immunohistochemistry analysis. However, we compared gene expression profiles between pericytes, vSMCs, and fibroblasts, and performed human skin vasculature immunohistochemistry analysis, which led to the identification of myosin 1B (MYO1B

Clouded leopards in North American zoological institutions have a high frequency of pheochromocytomas and were identified in 32 of 70 (45%) animals necropsied. Archival sections of adrenal gland from 20 adult clouded leopards with unilateral or bilateral pheochromocytomas collected between 1984 and 2011 were examined by light microscopy and immunohistochemistry, and case demographics were reviewed. Affected leopards were older than 10 years of age (mean, 16 years; range, 11-19 years), and males were overrepresented (12 males, 8 females). Pedigree analysis yielded no evidence for heritability.

Angiosarcomas are sporadic vascular neoplasms among the most aggressive subtypes of soft tissue sarcomas. In addition, vast and multiple recurrent superficial scalp and facial angiosarcomas are very complex and extremely difficult to manage. Their occurrence brings about significant social and emotional distress to affected individuals. To date, no specific therapeutic strategy has been the most effective and reliable. Herein, we report a highly unique case of a geriatric male patient with recurrent scalp and facial angiosarcoma successfully treated by a chemotherapy-free regimen consisting of

Benign vascular neoplasms, or hemangiomas, can develop anywhere in the body.As they are usually asymptomatic, they are discovered incidentally while evaluating other coexisting diseases or conditions. We herein report two cases of capillary hemangioma at two extremely rare sites. A woman in her early 30s with a history of nine months of amenorrhea came for safe confinement and underwent an elective lower segment cesarean section (LSCS) with bilateral concurrent tubectomy. Another case involved a man in his 40s who presented with bleeding per rectum for three months. Per rectal examination, two

Neurofibromatosis type 1, also called von Recklinghausen's disease, is an autosomal dominant disorder linked to chromosome 17, characterized by growth impairment of the neural crest cells (ectoderm) manifested by multiple neural tumors, cutaneous pigmentations, and Lisch nodules. Disease phenotype develops with time, making its penetrance almost complete by 5 years of age. Compression of the gastro-intestinal, urinary, or pulmonary tracts by visceral neurofibromas may generate serious complications. Neurofibromatosis type 1 is remarkable for its association with occlusive (stenoses) or aneurys

Hemangiopericytomas (HPCs) are rare vascular neoplasms that arise from the pericytes of Zimmerman. They account for 2-3% of all soft tissue sarcomas in humans and they occur mainly in the musculoskeletal system. 15 to 30% of all HPCs occur in the head and neck region. Only 5% are located in the sinonasal region, where they display a more benign behaviour than in other parts of the body. We will describe a case of a right-sided HPC, in the posterior third of the middle turbinate. We will also discuss the epidemiology, the macro- and microscopical characteristics, the clinical and pathological f

A 5-year-old girl presented with a 6-month history of strabismus and painless left proptosis. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a homogenously enhancing, anterior, superomedial, left orbital mass. Excisional biopsy established the diagnosis of orbital glomangiopericytoma. Glomangiopericytoma of soft tissue is a perivascular myoid neoplasm with hemangiocytoma-like vascular channels that has overlapping features between glomus tumor and myopericytoma. To the authors' knowledge, glomangiopericytoma of the orbit has not previously been reported.

Leiomyomas are benign tumours of smooth-muscle origin representing 4.4% of all benign soft-tissue neoplasms. They are classified as cutaneous, vascular and leiomyomas of deep soft tissues. Leiomyomas rarely occur in extremities and are more common in the lower limb than in the upper extremity. Deep soft tissue leiomyomas are even rare with a very few reported cases so far in the literature. A 25-year-old female presented to us with an atraumatic slowly enlarging mass in the right forearm from 6 months with mild erosion of cortex of radius. She was otherwise healthy, MRI revealed a soft tissue

With an incidence of approximately 4% infantile hemangiomas are the most common vascular tumors in children and show characteristic growth dynamics. In order to avoid erroneous treatment, they need to be differentiated from other vascular tumors (granuloma pyogenicum and kaposiform hemangioendothelioma) and vascular malformations. Of all infantile hemangiomas 85% are uncomplicated and undergo spontaneous resolution starting towards the end of the first year of life. First-line treatment for complicated infantile hemangiomas (15%), i.e. those with imminent obstruction (eyes and nose), ulceratio

The diagnosis and prognosis of follicular thyroid neoplasms are based on the identification of capsular and vascular invasion. Although conventional histology allows accurate classification in most cases, its inherent limitations in tissue sampling can result in misjudgment of both the presence and extent of invasion, and occasionally result in diagnostic inaccuracies. Consequently, unexpected tumor recurrence or overtreatment still represent significant clinical challenges. To mitigate these limitations, emerging diagnostic approaches are exploring advanced imaging modalities. X-ray 3D virtua

Mesenchymal neoplasms with GLI1 alterations (rearrangements and/or amplification) have been reported recently in several anatomic locations, which include head and neck, soft tissue, and gastrointestinal tract. Herein, to the best of our knowledge, we describe the first three cases of superficial/subcutaneous mesenchymal neoplasm with GLI1 amplification. The neoplasms exhibited low-grade cytologic features with predominant round cell morphology, glomangioma-like areas and a rich background capillary network. There were two to three mitotic figures per 10 HPF and focal necrosis in one case. The

Kaposi's sarcomas are seen more commonly in routine histopathology laboratories since the advent of the more widespread and aggressive variant of the disease associated with HIV infection. Distinguishing nodular lesions from other spindle cell and vascular tumours can sometimes be difficult. Immunohistochemistry has been disappointing as a diagnostic aid, often requiring special fixation or frozen tissue and even then, staining of spindle cells has been variable. We describe the use of the new IgG1 mouse monoclonal antibody raised against human placental endothelial cells, QBEnd/10, on routine

We present a case of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the placenta of healthy baboon (Papio spp.). Grossly, the fetal, maternal, and placental tissues were unremarkable. Histologically, the placenta contained an unencapsulated, poorly demarcated, infiltrative, solidly cellular neoplasm composed of cells that resembled hepatocytes. The neoplastic cells were diffusely positive for vimentin and focally positive for Ae1/Ae3, Arginase -1, glutamine synthetase, and CD10, and negative for ER, vascular markers (CD31 and D240), S100, glypican, C-reactive protein, FABP, desmin, and beta-catenin; INI1 p

Retroperitoneal venous hemangioma is a rare vascular malformation. The present study reports a unique case of a 68-year-old female with a retroperitoneal ovarian venous hemangioma that was surgically resected. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a retroperitoneal mass anterior to the left kidney. Enhanced imaging revealed a close relationship between the mass and surrounding vessels, suggesting a retroperitoneal vascular neoplasm. Histopathological examination of the tissue after complete surgical resection confirmed the diagnosis of a retroperitoneal ovarian venous heman

Alveolar soft-part sarcoma is a rare neoplasm of unknown histogenesis that accounts for less than 1% of all soft-tissue sarcomas. The tumor is highly vascularized with small vascular spaces separating nests of cells, and from cytogenetic point of view, is characterized by chromosome rearrangement der(17)t(X:17)(p11:q25) that results in the ASPL-TFE3 translocation. It can occur at any age, but it is most common between 15 and 35 years of age. The prognosis is poor, despite the relatively slow growth of the tumor. We present here an atypical case of alveolar soft-part sarcoma in which the age of
