Neuroendocrine aspects of amenorrhea related to stress.

Reproductive functions are controlled by a very sophisticated system that is composed by the perfect syncronization of neuronal end endocrinological functions. Hypothalamus is the neuroendocrine gland that discharges GnRH that stimulates LH and FSH secretion from pituitary thus promoting ovarian function. Whatever affects the hypothalamic activity might be able to interfere with the reproductive axis. In fact changes in such sophisticated stimulatory system is able to negatively affect the periodical function of the ovary and may induce amenorrhea. Stressant situations, due to physical, psycho

Simplified staining in situ of neurosecretory cells of the supraoesophageal ganglion of the female Culex pipiens molestus (Forskal) (Diptera: Culicidae).

The author describes the morphology and distribution of the neurosecretory cells in the supraoesophageal ganglion of the adult female Culex pipiens molestus, using paraldehyde fuchsin and paraldehyde thionine-paraldehyde fuchsin as vital staining techniques. The brain of Culex pipiens molestus has three regions (the proto-, deuto- and tritocerebrum) in which principally two types of neurosecretory cells (A and B) can be detected. Both A (dark) and B (light) cells are to be found in the protocerebrum, where they are termed medial neurosecretory cells, as they are distributed in the pars interce

Endocrine Disorders of Calcium Signaling in Children: Neuroendocrine Crosstalk and Clinical Implications.

Calcium ions (Ca2+) serve as universal second messengers regulating endocrine, neuronal, and metabolic processes. In children and adolescents, tight calcium signaling control is crucial for growth, hormone homeostasis, neuromuscular function, and neurodevelopment. Disruptions in Ca2+-dependent pathways-whether genetic, metabolic, or acquired-underlie a spectrum of pediatric endocrine diseases often presenting with neurological manifestations This review summarizes calcium's roles in hormone secretion, parathyroid and vitamin D metabolism, and neuronal excitability, and discusses monogenic and

Allopregnanolone and neuroHIV: Potential benefits of neuroendocrine modulation in the era of antiretroviral therapy.

Forty years into the HIV pandemic, approximately 50% of infected individuals still suffer from a constellation of neurological disorders collectively known as 'neuroHIV.' Although combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) has been a tremendous success, in its present form, it cannot eradicate HIV. Reservoirs of virus reside within the central nervous system, serving as sources of HIV virotoxins that damage mitochondria and promote neurotoxicity. Although understudied, there is evidence that HIV or the HIV regulatory protein, trans-activator of transcription (Tat), can dysregulate neurosteroid

Pathophysiology of fibromyalgia.

This article reviews the biologic, genetic, and environmental factors that may contribute to the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia. As an affective spectrum disorder, fibromyalgia may share these causal factors with a number of related and co-occurring pain conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome or temporomandibular disorder. There is strong evidence that cardinal pain symptoms of fibromyalgia may be due to alterations in central processing of sensory input, along with aberrations in the endogenous inhibition of pain. Genetic research has shown familial aggregation of fibromyalgia and othe

[Hormonal diseases after traumatic brain injury].

Traumatic brain injury represents major medical and social problem in all developed countries. Its incidence is about 200 per 100,000 inhabitants per year. In the acute phase immediately after injury the posterior pituitary dysfunction is well-known. The incidence of severe grossly hypernatremic cases of diabetes insipidus (DI) is about 3%, less severe form of ADH insufficiency was recognized in 21-26%. The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) was described in about 14%. These changes are transient in most cases, persisting DI has an incidence of 5-7% and SIADH case

[Interaction involving the thymus and the hypothalamus-pituitary axis, immunomodulation by hormones].

Perfectly projected and impeccably created, the endocrine system precisely regulates the most delicate immune processes. The immune and neuroendocrine systems are two essential physiological components of mammalian organisms important for protection from the infection and disease on one hand, and on the other, for regulation of metabolism and other physiological activities; namely, the evidence has been found indicating that there is active and dynamic collaboration of these systems in the execution of their designated functions. These interactions occur at many stages of embryonic and neonata

Plasticity of neuroendocrine-thymus interactions during aging.

Thymic regrowth and reactivation of thymic endocrine activity may be achieved even in old animals by different endocrinological or nutritional manipulations such as, (a) intrathymic transplantation of pineal gland or treatment with melatonin, (b) implantation of a growth hormone (GH) secreting tumor cell line or treatment with exogenous GH, (c) castration or treatment with exogenous luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH), (d) treatment with exogenous thyroxine or triiodothyronine, and (e) nutritional interventions such as arginine or zinc supplementation. Fibromyalgia pathogenesis explained by a neuroendocrine multistable model.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a central disorder characterized by chronic pain, fatigue, insomnia, depression, and other minor symptoms. Knowledge about pathogenesis is lacking, diagnosis difficult, clinical approach puzzling, and patient management disappointing. We conducted a theoretical study based on literature data and computational analysis, aimed at developing a comprehensive model of FM pathogenesis and addressing suitable therapeutic targets. We started from the evidence that FM must involve a dysregulation of central pain processing, is female prevalent, suggesting a role for the hypothalamu

Endocrine and neuroendocrine cytopathology.

Cytology is an easily-accessible, cost-effective, and safe procedure for the initial evaluation of most endocrine/neuroendocrine lesions. Both fine-needle aspiration cytology and exfoliative cytology have shown good sensitivity and specificity in detecting endocrine/neuroendocrine benign proliferations and malignancies. Thanks to its utility for early diagnosis, cytology has contributed to the decline in mortality of endocrine/neuroendocrine neoplasms. The endocrine system comprises different endocrine organs, such as the thyroid, adrenal glands, paraganglia, parathyroid, pancreas, hypothalamu

Synaptic connectome of a neurosecretory network in the Drosophila brain.

Hormones mediate inter-organ signaling, which is crucial in orchestrating diverse behaviors and physiological processes, including sleep and activity, feeding, growth, metabolism, and reproduction. The pars intercerebralis and pars lateralis in insects represent major hubs that contain neurosecretory cells (NSCs) that produce various peptide hormones. To obtain insight into how hormonal signaling is regulated, we have characterized the synaptic connectome of NSCs in the adult Drosophila brain. Identification of neurons providing inputs to multiple NSC classes implicates diuretic hormone 44-exp

Transgenic and transcriptional studies on neurosecretory cell gene expression.

1. Studies of the regulation of neurosecretory cell gene expression suffer from the lack of suitable cell lines. Two approaches have been used to overcome this deficit: transfection of neuropeptide genes into heterologous cell lines and generation of transgenic animals. 2. Studies with heterologous cell lines have revealed the potential involvement of nuclear hormone receptors, POU proteins, and fos/jun/ATF family members in the regulation of the vasopressin and oxytocin genes. Although limited in their scope, these studies have contributed greatly to the dissection of basic properties of elem

Neuroendocrine dysfunction following traumatic brain injury: Current insights and emerging perspectives.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is not a singular event with finite boundaries, but a complex and evolving pathology. While the initial mechanical insult may be fleeting, its consequences can ripple across physiological systems for months or years. One of the most underappreciated yet clinically significant consequences is the disruption of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis (HPA). Neuroendocrine dysfunction after TBI can present in various forms-some subtle, others life-altering-affecting metabolic regulation, sexual health, psychological wellbeing, and rehabilitation potential. This review explore

An inadvertent issue of human retina exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals: A safety assessment.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are a group of chemical compounds that present a considerable public health problem due to their pervasiveness and associations with chronic diseases. EDCs can interrupt the endocrine system and interfere with hormone homeostasis, leading to abnormalities in human physiology. Much attention has been focused on the adverse effects EDCs have on the reproductive system, neurogenesis, neuroendocrine system, and thyroid dysfunction. The eye is usually directly exposed to the surrounding environment; however, the influences of EDCs on the eye have received compa

[Clinical characteristics of the functional dyspepsia in adolescents].

The author has studied clinical peculiarities of the functional dyspepsia in 92 adolescents. It was established that functional dyspepsia takes first place in the list of the digestive system diseases. There were different vegetative disorders in all patients with functional dyspepsia. The hypothalamic syndrome and hypophysis dominant have been established in these patients. Adolescent's dyshormonosis causes tension of functional state of internal organs and systems including the digestive system. So functional dyspepsia should be regard as a display of the neuroendocrine disorders and vegetat

[The sympathetic system and neuroendocrine hypertension].

Sporadic pheochromocytoma is a rare tumor that should be taken into account in patients with hypertensive crisis, arrhythmias, and panic disorder. Familial pheochromocytoma is frequently found in subjects with von Hippel-Lindau disease, multiple endocrine neoplasia type II, neurofibromatosis, and SDHD gene mutations. The prevalence of sporadic pheochromocytoma is very low, approximately 0.05% among subjects with essential hypertension and even less in the general population. However, aggressive diagnostic intervention is recommended whenever a pheochromocytoma is suspected because the uncontro

Beyond heart rate variability: vagal regulation of allostatic systems.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a role in a wide range of somatic and mental diseases. Whereas the role of the ANS in the regulation of the cardiovascular system seems evident, its role in the regulation of other systems associated with allostasis is less clear. Using a model of neurovisceral integration we describe how the ANS and parasympathetic tone in particular may be associated with the regulation of allostatic systems associated with glucose regulation, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function, and inflammatory processes. Decreased vagal function and heart rate variab
