Acquired progressive lymphangioma of the nipple.

A 47-year-old woman presented with left nipple itch and discomfort. On physical examination she was found to have a 7 mm lesion. She underwent bilateral mammography and bilateral breast ultrasound which were normal. A punch biopsy of the lesion was performed in the office and the specimen submitted to pathology. Histopathological examination showed ectatic vascular spaces lined by flattened, cytologically bland endothelial cells dissecting the dermal collagen. Evident lymphatic valves were present within the vascular spaces confirming that the vessels were lymphatic in nature. The diagnosis of

Rare benign tumours of the nipple.

BACKGROUND: Benign lesions of the breast in total are much more frequent than malignant ones. However, there are no epidemiologic data on the prevalence of benign or malignant tumours of the nipple, and the bibliography on benign nipple tumours in general is limited. AIMS: To present some rare cases of benign nipple tumours and review the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four cases of rare benign nipple tumours: neurofibromas, wart, leiomyoma and milium are presented. The literature search on benign nipple tumours was performed using MEDLINE, Pubmed, and Cochrane databases with limits: Eng

Syringocystadenoma papilliferum on the male nipple.

Syringocystadenoma papilliferum is a rare benign adnexal tumor that most frequently arises from an organoid nevus on the head and neck. Occurrence of this tumor on the male breast is extremely rare. A 74-year-old Japanese man presented with a nodule on his left nipple. Histopathological findings were typical for syringocystadenoma papilliferum. Ultrastructurally, constituent epithelial cells of the tumor were divided into three types. We focused on one cell type, undifferentiated clear cells, which have been suggested to be pluripotent cells bearing stem cell nature in syringocystadenoma papil

Diseases of the male nipple and areola.

The male nipple-areola-complex (NAC) is a residual organ without physiologic functions in the male. It possesses similar hormone sensitivity and sexual sensitivity as the female organ. The location of the NAC on the chest wall with respect to other surface features is relevant for the male appearance. All known disseminated skin diseases may involve the nipple and areola. A number of specific localized diseases have been described in the literature, such as mammillary eczema, demodicidosis, lymphadenosis cutis benigna, nevoid hyperkeratosis, and thelalgia. Special attention is required if nipp

Bloody nipple discharge in an infant.

Although milky nipple discharge appears frequently in infants, bloody nipple discharge is a very rare finding. We experienced a 4-month-old, breast-fed infant who showed bilateral bloody nipple discharge with no signs of infection, engorgement, or hypertrophy. The infant's hormonal examination and coagulation tests were normal, and an ultrasound examination revealed mammary duct ectasia. The symptoms resolved spontaneously within 6 weeks without any specific treatment, except that we advised the mother to refrain from taking herbal medicine. Since no such case has been previously reported in K

Florid papillomatosis of the male nipple.

The authors present a case of an adenoma of the nipple in a 61-year-old man who reported a 6-month history of nodularity and itching at his left nipple. Examination revealed a firm, well-defined, vascularized tumor measuring .8 cm that altered the normal anatomy of the nipple. A total excision of the nipple and areola was performed. The histological diagnosis was adenoma of the nipple. No recurrent tumor has been observed during 4 years of postoperative follow-up. An adequate excision of the lesion is curative without any risk of recurrence or development of malignancy.

A geometric method for nipple localization.

BACKGROUND: An important part of preoperative assessment in breast reduction surgery is to locate the site of the nipple-areola complex for … ocalization to reduce the learning curve for trainee surgeons. METHODS: Aesthetic placement of the nipples is at the lower angles of an equilateral or a short isosceles triangle on the chest with its apex at the sternal angle. This triangle can be thought of as two right-angled triangles with their Y-axis on the median plane. The base and vertical limb a …

Surgical management of nipple discharge.

PURPOSE: Nipple discharge is reported in 2.5-3% of women with breast carcinoma. Breast carcinoma is found in approximately 8% of surgically treated patients presenting with bloody nipple discharge (ND). METHODS: In the present study 110 women with ND as a presenting symptom were examined. The discharge was spontaneous in 76 and elicited in 11 patients. RESULTS: After surgical intervention benign breast disease was found in 85% of patients. Thirteen women (15%) were found to have malignancy and underwent additional surgery. Cytology of the discharge was positive or suspicious for malignancy i

[Diagnostic management of nipple discharge].

Nipple discharge may be a symptom of a variety of diseases. The importance of nipple discharge is its possible association with breast carcinoma. Not only the precise clinical evaluation but also particularly imaging evaluation by mammography, ultrasound, galactography or MR-galactography is necessary to establish the exact diagnosis and plan proper treatment. Depending on the underlying pathology--most commonly intraductal papilloma, fibrocystic changes or breast carcinoma--the optimal therapeutic regimen, such as single lactiferous duct excision on the one end and modified radical mastectomy

Idiopathic calcinosis of the areola of the nipple.

Idiopathic calcinosis cutis involving the breast is a rare condition. Previously reported cases were detected by mammography without specific cutaneous findings. We report a case of idiopathic calcinosis of the areola of the nipple in a 32-year-old Korean woman that has unique clinical features resembling scrotal calcinosis.

Nipple discharge: surgical significance.

Nipple discharge is an important clinical entity ranking second only to a lump as the most common complaint among 7,588 patients having breast surgery (560/7,588, or 7.4%). In the office and clinic it is even more common, since many patients can be treated medically and do not require an operation. To be significant, a discharge should be true, spontaneous, persistent, and nonlactational. Nipple discharge can be milky, multicolored and sticky, purulent, clear (watery), yellow (serous), pink (serosanguineous), or bloody (sanguineous). Watery, serous, serosanguineous, and sanguineous discharges

Prenatal nipple conditioning for breastfeeding.

Twenty-two primigravida women who planned to breastfeed began conditioning their nipples six weeks before their expected delivery date by nipple rolling twice a day for two minutes each time; providing gentle friction against the nipple with a terry cloth towel for 15 seconds once a day; and nipple airing for two hours a day, allowing outer clothing to rub against the nipple. Each woman served as her own control, conditioning one nipple but not the other. No nipple ointments or soap were used on either nipple during the course of the study. Each woman was given instructions on breastfeeding te…

The Human Case for Sparing the Nipple.

Nipple-sparing mastectomy has been increasingly used for the surgical management of breast cancer. The procedure has been shown to be oncologically safe and improves patient psychosocial and sexual wellbeing outcomes. This reflection emphasizes that surgical management must consider the subjective patient experience.
