The effects of air pollution on allergic diseases are not yetwell-understood. Here, we show that proteins, in particular birch pollen proteins including the allergen Bet v 1, are efficiently nitrated by polluted air. PAN is one of a class of common air pollutants formed by the action of sunlight on volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides. No toxicokinetic studies have been found in the available literature. The acute toxicity of PAN is less than that of ozone, similar to NO2 and higher than SO2. We describe a 42-year-old woman who suffered a corneal injury following the application of a silver nitrate stick to her lid for hemostasis after a chalazion had been incised and drained. Nine months later there were greenish-yellow deposits in the deep stroma that accounted for a persistent decrease in vision. Physicians should be aware of the potential for ocular injury with the use of silver nitrate applicator sticks.

An efficient electrochemical ipso-nitration of aryl borides has been developed. Using Fe(NO3)3·9H2O as the nitrating reagent and AcOH as a promoter, the reaction proceeds under mild conditions to afford nitroarenes within only 2 h. This protocol eliminates the need for stoichiometric oxidants, demonstrates broad functional group tolerance and scalability, and delivers nitroarenes in good to excellent yields. Mechanistic studies, including radical trapping and cyclic voltammetry experiments, support a nitro radical-involved pathway.

This study explored the response of NO3--N bioreduction to Cr(VI) stress, including reduction efficiency and the pathways involved (denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA)). Nitric oxide (NO) has been implicated in the mediation of the neuronal excitotoxic cascade. In order to estimate brain NO production, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of NO metabolites, nitrates and nitrites (NN(x)) were measured in 31 children with west syndrome (WS) and in 12 controls.
