BACKGROUND: Dietary intake of nitrates, nitrites, and nitrosamines can increase the endogenous formation of N-nitroso compounds in the stomach. Results from animal studies suggest that these compounds might be teratogenic. Between 1990 and 2010, the tobacco industry-funded extensive academic research on TSNAs in Germany. A selective and sensitive method was developed for the determination of volatile N-nitrosamines by gas chromatography (GC). After denitrosation of N-nitrosamines with hydrobromic acid, the resulting secondary amines were converted into their N-diethylthiophosphoryl derivatives and then measured by GC using a DB-1701 capillary column with flame photometric detection. The calibration graphs for N-nitrosamines in the range 0.05-1 nmol were linear and sufficiently reproducible for quantitative determination. We described here the stereoselective synthesis of O-glycosides from 2-amino thioglycosides using N-nitrosamine as the directing group. The reaction was activated by using the NIS/TfOH system in dichloromethane at -10 °C. Various sugar and non-sugar acceptors were successfully glycosylated with 2-amino 1-thioglucoside and 2-amino 1-thiogalactoside under mild reaction conditions. These reactions provided β-glycosides in good to excellent yields.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking exposes people to high levels of Tobacco-Specific Nitrosamines (TSNAs), which include potent carcinogens. We systematically reviewed TSNA exposure between people smoking, vaping, and doing neither.
AIMS AND METHODS: Databases were searched between August 2017-March 2022, using vaping-related terms. Peer-reviewed articles reporting TSNA metabolites (NNAL, NNN, NAB, and NAT) levels in bio-samples among adults exclusively vaping, exclusively smoking, or doing neither were included.
