During the summer of 2011 and winter of 2012, we continuously measured trace acid gas concentrations in Tokushima, Japan, using a parallel plate wet denuder coupled ion chromatograph. The average concentrations of hydrochloric acid (HCl), nitrous acid (HONO), nitric acid (HNO(3)), and sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) were, respectively, 0.54, 1.20, 1.17, and 3.22 μg m(-3) in the summer, and 0.09, 1.06, 0.46, and 5.11 μg m(-3) in the winter. Twenty five mutants defective in biosynthesis of antitumor antibiotic landomycin E and 22 mutants with higher level biosynthesis of this antibiotic were obtained after nitrosoguanidine mutagenic treatment of wild strain of Streptomyces globisporus 1912 spores. Six of them (5 mutants of LndE and 1 mutant of LndE+) were found to carry uvs-mutation responsible for high level UV-sensitivity. Uvs-mutants 1912-11 and 1912-16 were highly sensitive to the action of nitrous acid, hydrogen peroxide and methyl-methane-sulfonate.

Gas-phase nitrosation of amines implies a nonionic pathway different from the nitrosonium nitrosation via acidification of nitrite. We present a novel nitroxyl (HNO) generation method, which avoids the need of using a liquid system or extreme experimental conditions. This method consists of the reaction between a gaseous base and an HNO donor (Piloty's acid) in the solid phase, allowing the formation of gaseous HNO in a fast and economical way. Detection of HNO was carried out indirectly, measuring the nitrous oxide (N2O) byproduct of HNO dimerization using infrared spectroscopy, and directly, using mass spectrometry techniques and an electrochemical HNO sensor.

This paper describes the performance of our automated acidic (CH(3)COOH, HCOOH, HCl, HNO(2), SO(2), and HNO(3)) gases monitor utilizing a parallel-plate wet denuder (PPWD). The PPWD quantitatively collects gaseous contaminants at a high sample flow rate (∼8 dm(3) min(-1)) compared to the conventional methods used in a clean room. Rapid response to any variability in the sample concentration enables near-real-time monitoring. In the developed monitor, the analyte collected with the PPWD is pumped into one of two preconcentration columns for 15 min, and determined by means of ion chromatography.
