In an inpatient survey the medication records of 2004 mothers both breast and bottle feeding were examined and the drugs taken in the early postnatal period recorded. No notable differences existed between the types of drugs prescribed for breast feeding and bottle feeding mothers. Iron, vitamins, and mild analgesics were taken routinely by the population, and antibiotics, laxatives, and hypnotics were frequently prescribed. A multifaceted analysis of the nutritional status of 196 subjects, aged over 65, institutionalized in hospitals, residential accomodation, and sheltered dwellings and of noninstituionalized subjects was untaken. The association between the prevalence of both byssinosis and chronic bronchitis and the level of airborne dust was examined in workers in preparing departments in flax mills in Northern Ireland. One-second forced expiratory volume (F.E.V.1·0) and forced vital capacity (F.V.C.) were measured before starting work in five flax hacklers with symptoms of grade II byssinosis and in five matched controls. Similar measurements were taken in each group at the end of the day shift. Congenital heart defects are a major congenital abnormality and are assuming increasing importance.
