Pruritus, Fever, and Sweats at the End of Life: Nursing Assessment and Management Considerations.

Pruritus, fever, and sweats are frequently observed thermoregulatory symptoms among patients with advanced chronic illnesses, especially during the terminal phase. These symptoms can substantially affect patient comfort and may contribute to fatigue, delirium, sleep disturbances, and lead to increased caregiver burden. Nurses play a crucial role in distinguishing between reversible and irreversible causes of pruritus, fever, and sweats. They are essential in implementing evidence-based interventions focused on patient comfort that align with the goals of care for both patients and families. Th

Comprehensive assessment of AIDS patients using the behavioural systems model for nursing practice instrument.

The major changes resulting from the AIDS diagnosis and illness were measured, described and classified in the Behavioural Systems Model's eight subsystems--achievement, affiliative, aggressiveness/protectiveness, dependence, ingestive, eliminative, restorative and sexual. Thirty male AIDS patients with Kaposi's Sarcoma were drawn as a convenience sample from a major medical centre's outpatient clinic. The subjects self-rated their perceived changes in the above eight major areas, using a 140-item instrument (DBSM) consisting of 24 categories of changes distributed in the above eight areas. Pa

METHODS: A structured narrative review used targeted searches of PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Scopus, supplemented by federal surveillance reports, clinical guidance, and policy documents. Evidence was synthesized across five domains: suicide prevalence and tre

The development and preliminary validation of a multidimensional assessment scale for loneliness in nursing homes.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness among nursing home residents is a multidimensional and subjective experience associated with adverse health outcomes. Existing instruments often fail to capture this complexity and are poorly adapted to cognitively impaired populations in institutional care settings. OBJECTIVES: To create a multidimensional, cognitively accessible assessment scale for loneliness in nursing home residents, grounded in residents' experiences and suitable for use in routine care. DESIGN: Sequential multi method study following the initial stages of scale development as outlined by Boateng

Implementation of a novel nursing assessment tool in geriatric trauma patients with proximal femur fractures.

BACKGROUND: Geriatric trauma patients represent a special challenge in postoperative care and are prone to specific complications. The goal of this study was to analyse the predictive potential of a novel nursing assessment tool, the outcome-oriented nursing assessment for acute care (ePA-AC), in geriatric trauma patients with proximal femur fractures (PFF). METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of geriatric trauma patients aged ≥ 70 years with PFF was conducted at a level 1 trauma centre. The ePA-AC is a routinely used tool that evaluates pneumonia; confusion, delirium and dementia (CDD); de…

Assessment and therapeutic management of acute asthma: The approaches of nursing staff in patient care.

Acute severe asthma describes serious asthmatic attacks, which remain a major treatment challenge and a significant source of morbidity in adults. It places the patient in danger of developing respiratory failure, a condition known as status asthmaticus. It is often fatal if not recognized and treated early. Many patients are at risk for numerous reasons; thus, the key issues are early detection, assessment and management. A multidisciplinary and collaborative approach is needed to effectively treat acute respiratory failure (ARF). Considerable research has investigated the range of opportunit

[Assessment of indications for admission to a nursing home: evaluation of the questionnaire indication Alkmaar].

This article aims at testing an assessment schedule which is generally applied in order to determine the necessity and urgency of admission into a home for the aged. The central question concerns the extent to which this schedule contributes to (1) objectivity, implying that applicants with similar 'needs' will have an equal opportunity of being admitted to the requested provision, and (2) efficiency, meaning that a clear distinction in the urgency of admission is being made according to the seriousness of 'needs'. The research therefore concentrates on two topics. First, the homogeneity and s
