[Effect of chitosan in complex management of obesity].

UNLABELLED: The aim of the present study was to verify the effect of chitosan as a possible adjuvant in the complex management of obesity. METHOD: Fifty obese women (22-59 years, BMI > 30) participated in the study. A six months program consisted of 2-hour meetings with a physician, psychologist and dietitian, in a group of about 20 persons, every two weeks. Low calorie diet (1000 kcal/day), physical activity and behaviour modification were recommended. Supplementation with chitosan was evaluated in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study. In the chitosan group, participants rece

Methoxychalcones: a promising therapeutic agent for obesity management.

Obesity is a major health concern, leading to diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular issues, and certain cancers, significantly reducing life quality and increasing mortality. While various treatments exist, new strategies are continuously explored. Polymethoxyflavones and their precursors, chalcones, are bioactive compounds with potential anti-obesity effects. This study investigated the therapeutic potential of methoxychalcone compounds in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese rats. We selected 1-(2,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl),3-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one for in vivo testing due to its lo

Obesity and its management in primary care setting.

Obesity is a worldwide epidemic affecting adults and children, regardless of their socioeconomic status. Significant progress has been made in understanding the genetic causes contributing to obesity, shedding light on a portion of cases worldwide. In young children with severe obesity however, recessive mutations, i.e., leptin or leptin receptor deficiency should be sought. Much more has been learned about the far-reaching impact of obesity on complications, including cardiovascular disease, liver and kidney dysfunction, diabetes, inflammation, hypertension, sleep, cancer, and the eye. Obesity in Cardiorenal syndrome: Management Opportunities and Challenges.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The prevalence of obesity continues to increase globally. There is accumulating evidence of the complex interplay between … and volume overload, which are the hallmarks of the cardiorenal syndrome. The clinical landscape of obesity management has changed significantly with the approval of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, which have been shown to have cardiovascular and kidney benefit among patients with obesity and a range of comorbid conditions including diabetes, CKD, and hea …

Targeting autophagy in obesity: from pathophysiology to management.

Obesity poses a severe threat to human health, including the increased prevalence of hypertension, insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, cancer, inflammation, sleep apnoea and other chronic diseases. Current therapies focus mainly on suppressing caloric intake, but the efficacy of this approach remains poor. A better understanding of the pathophysiology of obesity will be essential for the management of obesity and its complications. Knowledge gained over the past three decades regarding the aetiological mechanisms underpinning obesity has provided a framework that emphasizes energy imbalance

Obesity management in Prader-Willi syndrome: current perspectives.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a complex multisystem disorder due to the absent expression of the paternally active genes in the PWS critical region on chromosome 15 (15q11.2-q13). The syndrome is considered the most common genetic cause of obesity, occurring in 1:10,000-1:30,000 live births. Its main characteristics include neonatal hypotonia, poor feeding, and lack of appetite in infancy, followed by weight gain, lack of satiety, and uncontrolled appetite, frequently after the age of 2-3 years. The clinical picture includes short stature, multiple endocrine abnormalities (hypogonadism, growt

Adult obesity management in primary care, 2008-2013.

In the U.S., the occurrence of weight counseling in primary care for patients with obesity decreased by 10% between 1995-1996 and 2007-2008. There have been several national recommendations and policies to improve obesity management since 2008. The purpose of this study was to examine the rates of body mass index (BMI) screening, obesity diagnosis, and weight management counseling in the U.S. from 2008 to 2013. The National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey visit-level data for adults 18 and over with a primary care visit during survey years 2008-2009, 2010-2011, and 2012-2013 was included in the…

Australian General Practitioners' Perspectives on Childhood Obesity Management.

AIM: Childhood obesity is a public health challenge, with 26.1% of Australian children aged between 2 and 17 years classified as overweight or obese in 2022. General practitioners (GPs) are the most frequently accessed healthcare providers for children. This project aims to provide a contemporary insight into current childhood obesity management practices among Australian GPs, including perceived barriers and enablers. METHOD: A 20-question survey was developed by a multidisciplinary team including a paediatric endocrinologist, GP registrar, paediatric registrar and medical student. The Healt…

Airway management in critically ill patients with obesity.

Obesity is a global health challenge. An increasing number of patients with obesity are admitted to an intensive care unit. Airway management in these patients represents a unique challenge due to significant anatomical and physiological alterations. Increased adipose tissue in the face, cheeks, pharynx, hypopharynx, and neck narrows the upper airway, renders soft tissues more collapsible, and complicates airway management. In addition, the functional residual capacity is reduced, resulting in markedly shortened safe apnea time, contributing to severe hypoxemia during intubation. Non-invasive

Screening and Perioperative Management of Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome.

Obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) can often be underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed and has been shown to pose significant risks in perioperative situations. Patients with OHS have a higher prevalence of baseline morbid conditions like hypertension, congestive heart failure (CHF), diabetes mellitus, atrial fibrillation, and pulmonary hypertension (PH), which contribute to adverse postoperative outcomes. The potential challenges include difficult intubation and loss of airway, postoperative respiratory failure, worsening heart failure, pulmonary hypertensive crisis, and opioid-induced respirator

Surgical management of obesity - National University Hospital experience.

INTRODUCTION: The Singapore National Survey of 2004 reported the prevalence of obesity to have increased to 6.9%, thus reflecting the profound changes in our society's lifestyle and eating habits. Bariatric surgery has steadily been increasing to counter the ill effects of obesity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We audited our prospective series of 31 patients who had laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LABG) for morbid obesity performed by our multidisciplinary team at the National University Hospital, Singapore, between August 2004 and December 2006. RESULTS: The median age at presentation wa

Neural mechanisms and management of obesity-related hypertension.

The sympathetic nervous system is activated in human obesity and in the analogous experimental obesity produced by overfeeding. The causes remain uncertain and may be multiple. The consequences include hypertension, probably attributable to activation of the sympathetic outflow to the kidneys, and, more disputed, insulin resistance. The pattern of sympathetic activation in normal-weight and obesity-related hypertension differs in terms of the firing characteristics of individual sympathetic fibers (increased rate of nerve firing in normal-weight hypertensives, increased number of active fibers
