Multi-level experiences and determinants of alcohol misuse and illicit drug use among occupational groups at high-risk of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa: A thematic synthesis of qualitative findings.

Occupational groups at high-risk of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) may be at increased risk of substance use because of occupation-related factors. We synthesised qualitative data on determinants and context of alcohol misuse and illicit drug use in these groups. We systematically searched five databases for qualitative studies reporting on alcohol misuse or illicit drug use in fisherfolk, uniformed personnel, miners, truckers, motorcycle taxi riders, and sex workers in SSA. Qualitative data and interpretations were extracted and synthesised using a systematic iterative process to capture the…

A Comparative Analysis of the Economic Burden of Breast, Colorectal and Lung Cancer-Related Premature Mortality in Slovenia: Value-Added Decomposition by Occupation-Gender Groups.

INTRODUCTION: This paper aims to estimate the value-added loss attributable to premature deaths from breast, colorectal and lung cancer in Slovenia using a novel methodology using linked employer-employee data, enabling value-added decomposition by occupation-gender groups. METHODS: The analysis is based on population-level microdata for the 2016-2022 period matched from several sources. Premature mortality costs are estimated using occupation- and gender-specific output losses rather than assuming uniform productivity across working-age individuals. We approximate intangible capital using ea

[Criteria for classification of upper limb work-related musculo-skeletal disorders due to biomechanical overload in occupational health. Consensus document by an Italian Working Group].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In a preliminary consensus document the authors proposed criteria and methods to identify upper limb work-related MSDs due to biomechanical overload. With this document they intend to define severity according to shared models and procedures so as to fit behaviours to diagnostic procedures and their medical-legal assessment. This becomes especially important in view of Ministerial Decree of April 27 2004 fixing the new lists of diseases having a possible work-related origin that must be reported by law in accordance with art. 139 of law n. 1124, and also on account of

A population-based case-referent study of myocardial infarction and occupational exposure to motor exhaust, other combustion products, organic solvents, lead, and dynamite. Stockholm Heart Epidemiology Program (SHEEP) Study Group.

This case-referent study investigated the risk of myocardial infarction from occupational exposure to motor exhaust, other combustion products, organic solvents, lead, and dynamite. We identified first-time, nonfatal myocardial infarctions among men and women 45-70 years of age in Stockholm County from 1992 through 1994. We selected referent subjects from the population to match the demographic characteristics of the cases. A lifetime history of occupations was obtained by questionnaire. The response rate was 81% for the cases and 74% for the referents, with 1,335 cases and 1,658 referents inc

Simple, low-cost group-counselling programme vs treatment as usual for patients with newly notified occupational hand eczema-Exploratory analyses of effects on knowledge, behaviour and personal resources of the randomized PREVEX clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Sickness absence in hand eczema patients has been associated with stress rather than disease severity, indicating that personal aspects regarding hand eczema should be investigated further. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether patient education vs treatment as usual can influence behaviour and knowledge regarding skin protection and care, as well as personal resources, in patients with occupational hand eczema. METHODS: PREVEX is an individually randomized clinical trial investigating the 1-year effects of a simple, low-cost group-counselling programme vs treatment as usual for patient

Associations between repeated deployments to Iraq (OIF/OND) and Afghanistan (OEF) and post-deployment illnesses and injuries, active component, U.S. Armed Forces, 2003-2010. Part II. Mental disorders, by gender, age group, military occupation, and "dwell times" prior to repeat (second through fifth) deployments.

Since 2001, 1,347,731 active component U.S. military members deployed in support of operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. This report documents the percentages of deployers who were diagnosed with selected mental disorders in relation to the number (first through fifth) and lengths of "dwell times" prior to such deployments. In general, larger percentages of deployers were diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety-related disorders after second/third than first deployments. After first and repeat deployments, relatively more medical than other occupational group members were diagnosed with PTSD. In genera

Safety clutter: An attribute-based conceptualization and taxonomy for diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Serious injuries and fatalities (SIF) in construction have plateaued despite decades of investment in safety management systems. Many organizations contend with expanding safety processes that feel impractical, duplicative, and weakly connected to operational risk control. This has raised concern that some safety effort functions as "safety clutter:" work that consumes time and resources without improving safety. Yet, without an empirical conceptualization and classification, clutter is hard to diagnose and remove safely. METHOD: This study addresses this gap by conceptualizing
