1. Main findings in our previous studies are as follows: 1) there are three Purkinje cell zones running perpendicular to the long axis of the folia in the cat flocculus, 2) the caudal zone controls activity of the superior rectus (SR) and inferior oblique (IO) extraocular muscles via the y-group and oculomotor nucleus (OMN) neurons, and 3) the middle zone controls activity of the lateral (LR) and medial rectus (MR) muscles via the medial vestibular (MV) and abducens nucleus (ABN) neurons. In the present study, the neuronal pathways from the remaining rostral zone were investigated in the anest

Oculomotor nerve paresis is a rare neurological manifestation in rheumatological disease. It is most commonly described in connection with systemic vascular disease such as polyarteritis nodosa, Wegener's granulomatosis and Behçet's disease but is rarely an isolated symptom. As in benign vascular and diabetic oculomotor paresis, the etiology of oculomotor paresis in rheumatic disease appears to be angiopathy and subsequent ischaemia in the nerve tissue. Two case histories are presented. Both of the patients had been recognized as having well-defined rheumatological complaints without previous

BACKGROUND: Congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles type 1 (CFEOM1) is a congenital, non-progressive autosomal-dominant disorder with bilateral oculomotor nerve palsy due to mutations in the kinesin motor protein gene KIF21A. -
RESULTS: We present a 60-year old patient with CFEOM1 due to the common C2860T mutation in KIF21A. At the age of 37, he complained about newly occurred diplopia, which implies the capability of binocular vision before. The divergence of both globes progressed and the poor residual movement on attempted adduction and upgaze completely disappeared during the sixth

Eye movements occur when motor neurons (cranial nerves III, IV and VI) discharge and cause contractions of the extraocular muscles. Movements of the eye are influenced by several main factors: the force generated in each muscle, the inertia of the globe, the viscous and elastic properties of the muscles, and the viscoelasticity of the suspensory orbital tissues (all of which constitute the oculomotor plant). Overall, the response of the plant is sluggish, so the innervation to the muscles must have a specific time-course of activation. Otherwise, the movements of the eye would be too slow and

There are many pathogenic factors of strabismus. In addition to the changes of alignment and ocular movement, there may be abnormal pathways and development of extraocular muscles, abnormalities of orbital and intraorbital connective tissue, paralysis of cranial nerves (oculomotor nerve, trochlear nerve, and abductor nerve), and nuclear and supranuclear lesions, accompanied by other cerebral dysplasia sometimes. In recent years, advances in imaging technology and its application in the professional field of strabismus have made it possible to clearly observe the eye, orbital, intracranial, and

Compared with other skeletal muscles, extraocular muscles have fundamentally distinct properties that make them selectively vulnerable to certain neuromuscular disorders. When the oculomotor signs are predominant, their temporal progression allows the clinician to make the distinction between a muscular disease (mitochondrial disorder, oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy...) and a disorder of the neuromuscular junction (myasthenia gravis, botulism...). In other instances, such as myotonic dystrophy or facioscapulohumeral dystrophy, the ocular signs are not in the forefront but must be recognize

PURPOSE: To investigate the outcomes and predictive factors of surgical treatment of oculomotor nerve palsy.
METHODS: Records of patients requiring eye muscle surgery for oculomotor nerve palsy in our institution were retrospectively reviewed. Age, sex, etiology, deviation, completeness of involvement, time between onset and surgery, botulinum toxin treatment, and number of surgical procedures were recorded as potential predictive factors. Muscle function, presence of diplopia, and torticollis were also recorded. The main outcome measure was motor function. Secondary outcome measures were pre

A case in which a left oculomotor nerve schwannoma treated by en bloc resection of the lesion and grafting of the oculomotor nerve with sural nerve is presented. Recovery of nerve function was partial, but useful and cosmetically good. The last follow-up examination performed 2 years after surgery revealed recovery of function in the elevator muscle of the upper eyelid, together with slight vertical movement of the eye.

Data on the interaction between respiration, coughing, feeding, vision and oculomotor control in fish have been analyzed. A self-contained respiratory rhythm generator in the brainstem reticular formation is, at times, interrupted by a coughing generator, which is partly autorhythmic and partly under vagal afferent control. A number of cranial muscles are shared by the respiratory and masticatory systems. Others are predominately allocated to one of these systems but are recruited by the other under heavy loading conditions. The effect of retinal image displacements caused by respiration-induc

BACKGROUND: Ocular neuromyotonia (ONM) is characterized by episodic diplopia, which is usually triggered by prolonged eccentric gaze of the affected extraocular muscles. The spell is characterized by involuntary, occasionally painful, sustained contraction of one or more extraocular muscles innervated by the oculomotor, trochlear, or abducens nerve. ONM usually occurs as a late consequence of radiotherapy around the parasellar area, although idiopathic cases have been reported. Most cases are unilateral; however, bilateral ONM has occasionally been described.

Extraocular muscles differ from most other skeletal muscles in terms of constituent fiber types and innervation pattern. The rules that govern fiber responses to various experimental interventions for most skeletal muscles, therefore, may not strictly apply to the extraocular muscles. In this study, denervation of the extraocular muscles of Cynomolgous monkeys, Macaca fascicularis, was accomplished by intracranial transection of the oculomotor nerve. Survival times of 3-167 days were allowed, and muscles were processed for analysis by light and electron microscopy. Short-term alterations invol

Since Róbert Bárány proposed his hypothesis on vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), dizziness associated with vertigo has been interpreted as being vestibular in origin. However, there have been many contradictory findings showing modulations of VOR, which have caused confusion as to VOR's role and accuracy. Further, there seems to be an influence of VOR when the anatomical inner ear structures are congenitally absent. Many people report vertiginous symptoms when they are exposed to visually challenging situations. These people with visually induced vertigo are usually found to have only mildly abno

Poking palpebral conjunctiva evoked upper-eyelid retraction during ophthalmic surgery. Iatrogenic eyelid ptosis occurred if eyelid branch of lachrymal nerve was sectioned. Mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (Vme) neurons were labeled when tracer injected into lachrymal nerve innervating eyelid Mueller's muscle. Masseter afferent Vme neurons projecting to oculomotor nucleus (III) was observed in toad and rat, which helps amphibians to stare prey when they open mouth widely to prey. We hypothesized single Vme neurons may have peripheral collaterals to both eyelid and masseter muscles. WGA-594 was

This case with unilateral complete blepharoptosis and slight limitation of upgaze as ocular findings due to midbrain infarction represents an unusual form of intra-axial oculomotor nerve involvement. A 65-year-old man was admitted with acute unilateral ptosis of the left eyelid and gait ataxia. He had chronic hypertension in the medical history. The neurologic examination revealed that he had a complete ptosis of the left eyelid, slight limitation of elevation in the left eye, bilateral dysmetria, and gait ataxia. Magnetic resonance imaging showed acute infarction in the central part of midbra

There are only seven reported cases of intracranial schwannomas originating from the cranial nerves innervating the extraocular muscles. The present case, an incidental finding at autopsy, is the third case of schwannoma of the trochlear nerve and the first to illustrate the morphological relationship between this tumor and nerve. Reported cases of schwannoma of the oculomotor and trochlear nerves are summarized in a table.

Total sensory loss, ptosis, ocular muscle palsy and pupil dilatation were noted after alcohol injection into mandibular nerve for idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (in the right 2. and 3. division). The diagnosis was made that the injected alcohol induced the Gasserian palsy and oculomotor palsy. The oculomotor palsy was fully recovered except slight pupil dilatation after four months. The mechanism and prophylaxis of these complications are discussed.

Knowledge about hereditary eye diseases has been substantially increased by means of genetic testing during the last decade. This has resulted in a new classification of a number of disease patterns, which are characterised by non-progressive restrictive disorders of the oculomotor system, formerly classified as "congenital fibrosis syndromes". Based on the results of genetic testing, these ocular motility disorders are now referred to as "congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders" (CCDDs). They are caused by an impaired innervation of extraocular muscles because of a dysgenesis of the nucle

In order to avoid injury to the nerves supplying the extraocular muscles during orbital surgery, I studied the anatomy of these nerves in five human orbits that had been serially sectioned. Each of the nerves, except for the trochlear, exists as bundles of fascicles rather than as a discrete trunk. I made two other observations of surgical importance. First, the nerve to the inferior oblique muscle may pass through the belly of the inferior rectus muscle and then course beneath it before it reaches its normal position. Second, a fibrous septum at the orbital apex separates the abducent nerve f
