Identifying Differences in Molecular Characteristics Relevant for Remodeling of Periodontal Ligament Stem Cells from the Upper and Lower Jaw.

Periodontal defects' localization affects wound healing and bone remodeling, with faster healing in the upper jaw compared to the lower jaw. While differences in blood supply, innervation, and odontogenesis contribute, cell-intrinsic variances may exist. Few studies explored cell signaling in periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSC), overlooking mandible-maxilla disparitiesUsing kinomics technology, we investigated molecular variances in PDLSC. Characterization involved stem cell surface markers, proliferation, and differentiation capacities. Kinase activity was analyzed via multiplex kinase pr…

[The tooth: A marker of developmental abnormalities].

Tooth formation results from specific epithelial-mesenchymal interactions, which summarize a number of developmental processes. Tooth anomalies may thus reflect subclinical diseases of the kidney, bone and more broadly of the mineral metabolism, skin or nervous system. Odontogenesis starts from the 3rd week of intrauterine life by the odontogenic orientation of epithelial cells by a first PITX2 signal. The second phase is the acquisition of the number, shape, and position of teeth. It depends on multiple transcription and growth factors (BMP, FGF, SHH, WNT). These ecto-mesenchymal interactions…

Concrescent triplets involving primary anterior teeth.

Odontogenesis is a complex process wherein more than 200 genes are known to play a significant role in tooth development. An imbalance can lead to an abnormality in the number, size, shape or structure of the developing tooth/teeth. The presence of an extra dental lamina forms a supernumerary tooth. The supernumerary teeth are of two types: A rudimentary tooth where the supernumerary tooth does not resemble any tooth in the normal series or a supplemental tooth in which this anomalous tooth resembles one in the normal series. It is also very rare to encounter triple teeth in primary dentition.…

Locally infiltrative ameloblastic fibroma in a rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) with characterizations of its proliferating activity and biological behavior.

An 8-year-old male rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) presented with unilateral enlargement of the left mandible. Radiographs revealed a marked expansion of the left mandible with a multilocular radiolucent mass with abundant osteolysis. The mass was grossly firm, fleshy, and gelatinous on the cut surface. Histologically, the mass was locally infiltrative and composed of neoplastic epithelial and mesenchymal components that stained positive for cytokeratin and vimentin, respectively. Occasional densely spherical condensations of fibroblasts resembling the cap stage of odontogenesis were present i…

[Effect of maternal health and prenatal environmental exposure factors on tooth development].

Odontogenesis is a consequence of a complex series of reciprocal signal interactions between odontogenic epithelium and neural crest-derived odontotgenic mesenchyme. These interactions result from a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Given that a fetus develops in the mother, maternal health and environmental exposures have a great influence on tooth development. In this review, we focused on the key issues in the developmental defects of teeth induced by various types of maternal environmental factors, including environmental endocrine disruptors, joint action of two or m…

Epiprofin/Sp6: a new player in the regulation of tooth development.

Odontogenesis is governed by a complex network of intercellular signaling events between the dental epithelium and mesenchyme. This network leads to the progressive determination of tooth shape, and to the differentiation of these tissues into enamel-producing ameloblasts and dentin-producing odontoblasts respectively. Among the main signaling pathways involved in the regulation of tooth development, Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP), Sonic hedgehog (Shh) and Wingless-type MMTV integration site (Wnt) pathways have been reported to play significant roles. Recently, the phenotype of mice deficien…

Not in the classification: odontogenic hamartomata and allied lesions: can we find clarity at the interface of development and neoplasia?

Odontogenic lesions can present the diagnostic pathologist with uncertainty due to the range of clinical presentations and histological features. Whilst most of the tooth-forming apparatus involutes on completion of tooth formation, small remnants of both the epithelial and mesenchymal components remain in many individuals, both within the jaws and the overlying gingival mucosa. These developmental remnants can give rise to a range of lesions which span from reactive/inflammatory lesions through hamartomata to those which are neoplastic in nature. This varied etio-pathogenesis does not result

Expert consensus on odontogenic maxillary sinusitis multi-disciplinary treatment.

Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis (OMS) is a subtype of maxillary sinusitis (MS). It is actually inflammation of the maxillary sinus that secondary to adjacent infectious maxillary dental lesion. Due to the lack of unique clinical features, OMS is difficult to distinguish from other types of rhinosinusitis. Besides, the characteristic infectious pathogeny of OMS makes it is resistant to conventional therapies of rhinosinusitis. Its current diagnosis and treatment are thus facing great difficulties. The multi-disciplinary cooperation between otolaryngologists and dentists is absolutely urgent to

Over-eruption in marsupial carnivore teeth: compensation for a constraint.

Pronounced over-eruption of the canine teeth, causing the cervical enamel margin to extend beyond the alveolar bone and exposing the root, occurs with age and growth in Australian marsupial carnivores, much more than in eco-morphologically equivalent placental carnivores. Suppression of functional tooth replacement is characteristic of marsupials, where most placentals have the primitive diphyodont pattern of two generations of incisor, canine and premolar teeth. Canine and molar tooth dimensions of four species of marsupial carnivores (thylacine Thylacinus cynocephalus, Tasmanian devil Sarcop

Dental anatomy and replacement patterns in the early Permian stem amniote, Seymouria.

The exquisite preservation of maxillary and mandibular fragments of Seymouria has allowed us to examine for the first time in detail the dental anatomy and patterns of development in this stem amniote. The results obtained through histological examination show that Seymouria has pleurodont implantation with ankylosis of the tooth to the labial side of the jawbone. The dentary and maxillary teeth exhibit similar dental characteristics, such as the attachment bone (alveolar bone) and cementum rising above the jawbone on the base of the tooth, and smooth carinae extending lingually toward the too

A fourth teleost lineage possessing extra-oral teeth: the genus atherion (teleostei; atheriniformes).

In the course of an evolutionary and developmental study on the dermal skeleton, our attention was drawn to the existence of denticles located outside the oral cavity in the atheriniform species Atherion elymus. These denticles, attached to the surface of most dermal bones of the head, are especially numerous on the snout, chin and the undersides of the lower region of the head, where they are aligned forming a crenulated keel. Using light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, we clearly demonstrate the dental (vs bony) nature of these denticles. They are small, conical elements most

[Epidermal growth factor in tooth development].

The epidermic growth factor (EGF) inhibits the morphogenesis and cellular differentiation of dental tissues during embryogenesis. These effects are modulated according to the stage of tooth development. Thus, the cupula stage seems markedly affected contrary to the bell stage which continues to evolve eve in the presence of EGF. Distribution of EGF receptors is altered during the first stages or the morphogenesis and this is specific for each stage of dental development. Finally, some rare pathological processes, related to the EGF level, are particularly characterized by a very early growth o

The development and replacement of teeth in viviparous caecilians.

Tooth development and replacement in fetal and adult viviparous caecilians (Amphibia: Gymnophiona) are described and analyzed according to current theories of tooth succession. The fetal dentition differs from that of the adult in morphology, position, and function. Teeth are used by fetuses to scrape the oviducal epithelium, thus stimulating the secretion of a nutrient substance. Fetal dentitions vary in morphology and position in different species. The ontogeny of teeth of several species is described and the patterns of addition of loci and of replacement are analyzed. Loci are added both p

Coordinated labio-lingual asymmetries in dental and bone development create a symmetrical acrodont dentition.

Organs throughout the body develop both asymmetrically and symmetrically. Here, we assess how symmetrical teeth in reptiles can be created f … vical loop morphology during early development and differentiation of odontoblasts throughout later odontogenesis. In conclusion, the early asymmetrical development of the enamel organ seems to be a plesiomorphic character for all squamate reptiles, while symmetrical and precisely orchestrated deposition of hard tissue during tooth formation in acrodont dentiti …

Ontogeny reveals function and evolution of the hadrosaurid dinosaur dental battery.

BACKGROUND: Hadrosaurid dinosaurs, dominant Late Cretaceous herbivores, possessed complex dental batteries with up to 300 teeth in each jaw ramus. Despite extensive interest in the adaptive significance of the dental battery, surprisingly little is known about how the battery evolved from the ancestral dinosaurian dentition, or how it functioned in the living organism. We undertook the first comprehensive, tissue-level study of dental ontogeny in hadrosaurids using several intact maxillary and dentary batteries and compared them to sections of other archosaurs and mammals. We used these compar
