A Deceiving Massive Opacification of the Maxillary Sinus: Odontogenic Cyst Mimicking Odontogenic Sinusitis.

Considered the second most common type of odontogenic cysts, dentigerous cysts (DCs) are developmental lesions most often detected incidentally on radiographic imaging. The pathogenesis of DCs is not fully understood, but they are widely regarded as developmental cysts originating from the dental follicle. Although typically asymptomatic, DCs may cause clinical symptoms when they reach large sizes or get infected. This case highlights how a DC (common developmental odontogenic lesion often incidentally detected on imaging) may present with complete maxillary sinus opacification despite minimal…

Calcifying odontogenic cyst combined with odontogenic keratocyst: report of a case and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Odontogenic lesions composed of two or more separate odontogenic cysts are uncommon. The calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) and odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) are odontogenic cysts that exhibit some neoplastic features. Concurrence of these lesions is extremely rare. We report a rare case of COC combined with OKC in a patient and review the relevant literature systemically. CASE PRESENTATION: In this article, we present a case report of an 18-year-old boy patient with no medical history whose chief complaint was facial asymmetry. A painless swelling in the right side…

Assessment of MUC5AC and MUC2 Immunoexpression in Glandular Odontogenic Cysts, Dentigerous Cysts, and Mucoepidermoid Carcinomas.

Glandular odontogenic cysts (GOCs) and dentigerous cysts may show mucous metaplasia. Central mucoepidermoid carcinoma is very rare and mostly associated with dental cysts. It is hypothesized that odontogenic cysts showing mucus differentiation in their lining, have a propensity to transform into MEC. The present study is the first attempt to explore the relationship between odontogenic cysts [GOCs and dentigerous cysts with mucus metaplasia (DCMM)] and MEC by evaluating immunoexpression of MUC5AC and MUC2. Immunoexpression of MUC5AC and MUC2 was evaluated semiquantitatively in GOCs (20 cases),…

Report of Two Cases of Combined Odontogenic Tumors: Ameloblastoma with Odontogenic Keratocyst and Ameloblastic Fibroma with Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst.

Combined odontogenic neoplasms have rarely been documented. Such tumors have also been described by other researchers as "hybrid" lesions. The histologic features are often identical to other individually well-established odontogenic neoplasms such as ameloblastoma, adenomatoid odontogenic tumor, ameloblastic fibroma (AF), and ameloblastic fibro-odontoma. Their clinical presentation is variable, ranging from cysts to neoplasms showing varying degrees of aggressive behavior. Most combined tumors contain features of one of the odontogenic tumors in combination with either a calcifying odontogeni

Application of radiomics features in differential diagnosis of odontogenic cysts.

OBJECTIVES: Cysts in jaws may have similar radiographic features. However, it is important to clarify the diagnosis prior to surgery. The aim of this study was to compare the radiomic features of radicular cysts (RCs), dentigerous cysts (DCs), and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) as a non-invasive diagnostic alternative to biopsy. METHODS: In total, 161 odontogenic cysts diagnosed histopathologically (55 RCs, 53 DCs, and 53 OKCs) were included in the present study. Each cyst was semi-automatically segmented on CBCT images, and radiomic features were extracted by an observer. A second observer r…

Immunohistochemical evaluation of myofibroblast density in odontogenic cysts and tumors.

Background. The aim of this study was to investigate myofibroblast (MF) density in a broad spectrum of odontogenic cysts and tumors and the relation between the density of MFs and the clinical behavior of these lesions. Methods. A total of 105 cases of odontogenic lesions, including unicystic ameloblastoma (UAM), solid ameloblastoma (SA), odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), dentigerous cyst (DC), radicular cyst (RC) (15 for each category), and odontogenic myxoma (OM), adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT), calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) (10 for each category), were immunohistochemically stained wit…

Microvessel density in follicular cysts, keratocystic odontogenic tumours and ameloblastomas.

PURPOSE: Multicystic ameloblastoma is a benign epithelial odontogenic tumor that exhibits a more aggressive behavior than follicular cyst and keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT). The aim of this study was to perform an immunohistochemical evaluation of the mean microvessel density (MVD) effect on clinical behavior of odontogenic lesions and to determine whether peritumoral or intratumoral MVD has a more prominent role in clinical behavior of odontogenic lesions. METHODS: In a descriptive-analytic cross-sectional study, 45 paraffin blocks of mentioned lesions were selected and stained immuno

Prevalence and distribution of odontogenic cysts in Sicily: 1986-2005.

The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of odontogenic cysts (OCs) in Sicily and evaluate their distribution during a 20-year period. A cross-sectional retrospective study was carried out in 1,310 cysts of the jaw diagnosed in 12,197 individuals, who consecutively attended the Odontostomatologic Clinic of Palermo from 1986 to 2005. 1,273 cysts were classified as odontogenic, whereas only 37 were non-odontogenic. In the former group, the most frequent lesions were radicular cysts (84.5%), followed by dentigerous OCs (11.4%). Inflammatory radicular cysts were observed more in ma…

Odontogenic cysts: improved imaging with a dental CT software program.

PURPOSE: To evaluate a dental CT software program to determine whether it can provide a better means of assessing odontogenic cysts, lesions of the jaw derived from dental epithelium, than conventional techniques (orthopantomographic, intraoral, and mandibular films), which are of limited usefulness because of the curved configuration of the mandible; and to provide a brief review of these lesions. METHODS: Nine odontogenic cysts were studied with conventional radiographs and with the software program, which displays multiple cross-referenced axial, panoramic, and cross-sectional (unique to t…

Expression of Dlx-5 and HLX Proteins in Odontogenic Cysts.

Odontogenic cysts, commonly detected during routine examinations involving head and neck imaging such as orthopantomograms and computed tomography (CT), are classified into two groups: developmental and inflammatory. Radicular cysts, which belong to the inflammatory group, originate from odontogenic epithelium, while dentigerous cysts of developmental origin are observed as a result of peri-coronal expansion of fluid in the dental follicle. The diagnosis and identification of odontogenic cysts rely on clinical, radiographic, and histological evaluations. This study aimed to demonstrate the exp…

Heat Shock Proteins' Expression Profiles in Odontogenic Ameloblastomas and Cysts.

Tumors and cysts with odontogenic origin represent a family of lesions with specific histo-genetic and clinical characteristics. Among them, ameloblastomas are common benign neoplasms, predominantly detected in the anatomic areas of the jaws and also in the mandible and maxilla. Although they are characterized by a slow and stable growing pattern, a subset of them shows a tendency for local tissue invasiveness and partially increased recurrence rates after surgical excision. Furthermore, heat shock proteins (HSPs) are potentially implicated in ameloblastoma onset and progression. HSPs regulate

Keratinized Odontogenic Cysts in a Malayan Tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni).

A 14-year-old male intact Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni) was presented for a routine annual wellness exam and comprehensive oral h … ithin 2 weeks and have not recurred at the time of publication of this article. Similar keratinized odontogenic cysts are described in dogs, and there is only one other case report in a felid. This is the first known report of an odontogenic cyst in a tiger and of a keratinized odontogenic cyst in a nondomestic species.

Immunohistochemical characterisation of odontogenic cysts with mesenchymal and myofilament markers.

The aim of the present investigation was to analyse the fibroblast phenotype in the main groups of odontogenic cysts. We have examined the muscle differentiation markers alpha-smooth muscle actin (ASMA) and desmin and the presence of vimentin using immunocytochemistry. Fibroblasts of other cyst types, hyperplastic fibrous lesions, and from several normal sites were used as controls. All fibroblasts stained for vimentin, but a variable proportion of cyst wall fibroblasts were also positive for the antibody to ASMA. Their distribution was not random and two positive zones could be distinguished,…

Expression of epidermal growth factor receptors by odontogenic jaw cysts.

The expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFr) by odontogenic epithelium was studied in odontogenic cysts (n = 35), ameloblastoma (n = 6), and periapical granulomas containing proliferating epithelial rests of Malassez (n = 7) using a panel of monoclonal antibodies to EGFr (clone E30, F4 and C11) known to react with formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections. Odontogenic epithelium in all specimens demonstrated immunoreactivity with all three antibodies. Clone E30 consistently gave the most intense, membrane located staining pattern of the three antibodies tested. Generally, stainin…
