Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) occurs in an estimated 2% of head and neck-irradiated patients. It is seen most commonly in the mandible with other reported sites including the maxilla, temporal bone, clavicle, and vertebrae. It is defined as an area of exposed devitalised irradiated bone, with failure to heal during a period of at least 3 months, in the absence of local neoplastic disease. We report 2 cases of ORN following postoperative radiotherapy given to patients who had undergone an orbital exenteration. ORN can develop spontaneously in one-third of cases, although in the majority of patients,

PURPOSE: Hidradenoma papilliferum (HP) is a cystic lesion of apocrine gland origin that occurs most commonly in the perineal region. Although there are scattered reports of HP involving the eyelid, to our knowledge, we present the first case of HP of the orbit.
METHODS: A 63 year-old female presented with progressive left upper eyelid fullness over an 18 month period.
RESULTS: The lesion was excised via transconjunctival anterior orbitotomy without incident.
CONCLUSIONS: The pathologic features of HP are presented.

Orbital cellulitis is an uncommon condition previously associated with severe complications. If untreated, orbital cellulitis can be potentially sight and life threatening. It can affect both adults and children but has a greater tendency to occur in the pediatric age group. The infection most commonly originates from sinuses, eyelids or face, retained foreign bodies, or distant soources by hematogenous spread. It is characterized by eyelid edema, erythema, chemosis, proptosis, blurred vision, fever, headache, and double vision. A history of upper respiratory tract infection prior to the onset

The authors report a case of a 62-year-old female with history of multiple myeloma who presents with complains of swelling and pain in her right eye. On examination, it was found that she has proptosis, chemosis, and diplopia along with decreased vision. Initial workup and treatment did not yield significant results, eventually she was found to have myelomatous changes in her right orbit on MRI and was diagnosed with multiple myeloma of the orbit which resolved solely with radiation. This case tends to highlight the importance of considering myeloma of the orbit as a very important and early d

Apocrine hidrocystomas are benign cysts of sweat duct origin, originating mainly from the apocrine secretory glands of Moll. They are typically encountered in the head and neck, particularly around the inner canthus of the eyelid. An intraorbital location of this lesion is extremely rare but should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a painless cystic lesion in the ocular adnexa at any age.

Epithelioid sarcoma is an aggressive and rare malignancy first recognized by Enzinger in 1970. It is known most commonly to affect the distal upper extremities in young adults. The classical "distal" form has a male predominance and can also involve other less frequent sites including lower extremities, proximal upper extremities, and the trunk. The "proximal" variant of this tumor is deep seated, tends to occur in older patients and predominantly develops in the pelvis, perineum, and genital tract. In the orbit, only a single report of two cases, which had a typical histopathologic appearance

MALT lymphomas of the orbit are rare orbital tumors; the differential diagnosis needs to exclude inflammatory pseudotumors of the orbit, but also benign lymphoproliferations, pseudolymphomas, and other orbital neoplasms. After histological confirmation of the diagnosis staging is necessary, and - as long as the disease is localized exclusively in the orbit - radiation therapy should be started. The clinical picture of MALT lymphoma and its differential diagnosis and treatment are discussed with reference to an actual case.

Fibrous dysplasia is a benign, rare, and idiopathic skeletal disorder characterized by replacement and expansion of medullary bone by disorganized fibro-osseous tissue. Treatment for these lesions is usually sought for cosmetic or functional reasons. The surgical approaches vary from watchful expectancy for the lesion to stop growing after puberty to conservative resection to radical resection. In this case reports, 3 patients with craniofacial fibrous dysplasia involving orbital region underwent surgery. In these primary cases, resection and immediate reconstruction were performed to regain f

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is the fifth most common malignancy, with an annual incidence in the UK of 8/100,000. Until recently this incidence had been rising over the past two decades. The WHO classification divides non-Hodgkin's lymphomas into B- or T-cell neoplasms, with 85% of general lymphomas and almost all orbital lymphomas consisting of B-cell tumours. A case of systemic follicular lymphoma, with later orbital involvement, is presented.

PURPOSE: To describe a patient with mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the orbit, review clinical and imaging findings, and refine the differential diagnosis from other tumors of the orbit.
METHODS: Interventional case report and literature review.
RESULTS: A 21-year-old woman with a 6-month history of progressive proptosis presented with left-sided visual loss of recent onset. CT revealed a clearly outlined heterogeneous mass with calcified foci, whereas MRI showed an isointense signal to gray matter on T1- and T2-weighted images. The patient was diagnosed with mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the

CASE REPORT: A patient was studied because of upper lid bilateral edema and xanthelasmae-like lesions after three years of evolution. During the ophthalmologic examination orange-yellowish lesions and two symmetrical tumours were observed on the temporal part of both upper lids. Corticoid-therapy was undertaken which reduced the size of the tumours, however the size increased again after the discontinuation of treatment. A biopsy was performed and lid xanthogranulomatosis was diagnosed. Other systemic examinations were normal.
DISCUSSION: Erdheim-Chester disease is a xanthogranulomatosis that

PURPOSE: To describe a patient with liposarcoma metastatic to the left orbit.
METHODS: A 72-year-old man was admitted with diplopia and proptosis of the left eye. Previously, a retroperitoneal liposarcoma had been surgically removed followed by postoperative radiation. Visual acuity was normal. There was proptosis of the left eye, increased retrobulbar resistance and reduced mobility. Trans-septal orbital biopsies showed liposarcoma. The patient was initially treated with prednisolone and later received radio- and chemotherapy. Despite treatment he lost vision of the left eye and died a few m

A case of intraosseous orbital hemangioma is reported to alert surgeons to possible intraoperative hemorrhage during excision of such a lesion. A slowly enlarging mass was excised from the orbital rim of a 49-year-old woman. The clinical diagnosis was not suspected. In retrospect, roentgenographic findings included a focal honeycombed pattern of the zygomatic bone. Surgery was complicated by persistent low-volume bleeding. Histology showed endothelial-lined blood-filled channels within the bone. Intraosseous orbital hemangioma is a rare, benign neoplasm that can often be diagnosed clinically b

PURPOSE: To report a case of Gorham disease, also known as vanishing bone disease, of the orbit.
DESIGN: Interventional case report.
METHODS: A 43-year-old Caucasian woman developed a depression in her left temple, pulsation in her left upper eyelid and temple, and bulging of the left upper eyelid and headache. Computerized tomography revealed a lytic lesion in the roof of the left orbit.
RESULTS: Intraoperative examination of the lesion revealed a bony defect in the left orbital roof. Surgical intervention resulted in improvement of her symptoms, and pathology failed to reveal evidence of

Inverted papilloma is an unusual entity for many ophthalmologists. We report a case of inverted papilloma of the nasal cavity and sinuses, invading the orbit in a 33-year-old man. The patient presented with a right medial canthal mass, proptosis, diminution of vision, epiphora and nasal obstruction. In the past, he underwent multiple procedures for surgical removal of the tumor with frequent recurrences. A computed tomographic scan revealed a mass filling both the nasal cavities and sinuses, destroying adjacent bones and invading the medial aspect of the orbit, leading to proptosis. Excision o

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are anomalous communications between arterial and venous systems without interposed capillaries. These lesions are rarely entirely intraorbital. A case of an arteriovenous communication between branches of the internal and external carotid arterial circulations and the ophthalmic veins located within the orbit is reported. Treatment with embolization resulted in a branch retinal artery occlusion. Attempted direct arterial occlusion of a dural-based fistula of the eye is a risky procedure. If embolized, AVMs should probably be approached from the venous side,
