Early orthodontic treatment will not resolve all potential orthodontic problems or totally inhibit adverse skeletal growth patterns. However, by identifying problems at an early age it is possible to redirect skeletal growth; improve the occlusal relationship; enhance the patient's esthetics and self-image and, perhaps of even greater importance, achieve results that are unattainable later with the eruption of teeth and the cessation of growth.

This paper presents an orthodontic case of a large (14.5 mm) maxillary midline diastema that was related to the presence, and subsequent removal of 2 median maxillary supernumerary teeth and resulting bone loss. A combined orthodontic and maxillofacial approach involving bone grafting and fixed appliances was used to close the space. This episode of care was organized as interceptive treatment during development of the permanent dentition.

The leeway space provides adequate space to resolve crowding that is present in the mixed dentition in the majority of individuals. This space can be maintained by preserving arch length with a lingual arch as the primary teeth begin to exfoliate, unless conditions such as the premature loss of a primary canine require earlier intervention. A lip bumper can also be inserted after the eruption of the first premolars to preserve arch length.

The authors describe a simple, conservative procedure to guide the first permanent molar into its normal position in the dental arch. The second primary molar is recontoured and covered with a stainless steel crown, thus providing a free path of eruption for the first permanent molar.

OBJECTIVES:: To evaluate the skeletal, dental, and soft tissue changes after the use of miniscrew-anchored inverted Forsus fatigue-resistant device (FRD) in treatment of Class III malocclusion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:: In this controlled clinical trial, 16 patients (9 girls and 7 boys; age 12.45 ± 0.87 years) were consecutively treated with miniscrew-anchored inverted Forsus FRD. This group was compared with a matched control group of 16 untreated patients (8 girls and 8 boys; age 11.95 ± 1.04 years). Miniscrews were inserted bilaterally between the maxillary canine and first premolar. Forsus

The purpose of this report was to present the case of a nine-year-old patient with unilateral impaction of the permanent maxillary right first molar treated early using a simple and effective fixed appliance. The proposed intervention involved the construction of a fixed palatal arch with a soldered wire extending distally to the impacted permanent first molar. A button was bonded to the occlusal surface of the molar, which was to be used as a leverage point for engaging chain elastics to produce distal movement to disimpact and allow complete eruption of the molar. Following three months of t

Maxillary canines are the second most commonly impacted teeth, with mandibular third molars being the most commonly impacted teeth. One-third of the impacted maxillary canines are labially impacted, and the remaining two-thirds are palatally impacted. Palatally impacted canines (PICs) comprise approximately 1% to 2.5% of the general population. These impactions can be managed with preventive, interceptive techniques or surgical uncovering. If preventive or interceptive measures are unsuccessful in allowing the canine to erupt, there are many techniques that can be employed to uncover the PIC.

The early orthodontic treatment of malocclusion includes the growth modification of skeletal discrepancy, preventive and interceptive orthodontic treatment of the dental malocclusion or oral habit. Therefore, early orthodontic treatment is to guide the normal dento-maxillafacial growth and development, eliminate the adverse effect on function of masticatory system and the health of dental and periodontal tissues. Most of the patients in the early permanent dentition are still in their pubertal growth period. Although all kind of comprehensive orthodontic treatment could be started from early p

The primary dental care clinician is in a prime position to identify deviations from normal dental development. Disturbances can affect any new erupting tooth. The objective of this narrative review is to describe several situations in which eruption disturbances can arise during the mixed dentition. It will provide an overview of the orthodontic considerations of these disturbances in addition to key summary points on interceptive management, based on the best available evidence.

UNLABELLED: Indications of developing malocclusion are often present in the mixed dentition. With judicious supervision and timely intervention their effects can be minimized. The general dental practitioner is ideally placed to recognize, manage and correct many such incipient problems. This first of two papers considers three keys to success involving, normal dental development, deviations from normal eruption patterns, crossbite correction and habit cessation.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The appropriate management of developing malocclusion may simplify later orthodontic management or indeed make s
