The article is devoted to the analysis of 5-year-long application experience of the rod-based apparatus with external fixation. The apparatus have been developed at the institute named after prof. M. I. Sitenko. Certain advantages and indications for rod-fixation in traumatology have been substantiated. In urgent traumatology the apparatus made the best showing in treatment of the open fractures. Possibility of these apparatus application as the treatment-and-transportation immobilization facilities in case of mass entrance of victims has been demonstrated. Rod-based apparatus are widely used

On occasion, the placement of orthopedic prosthetic components or stabilization hardware leads to surgical site infections, in some cases presenting at a point in time distant from the surgical procedure. Although infectious complications are the most common etiology for surgical site pain and inflammation, malignancies can also develop around prosthetic devices and metallic implants. When encountered, such malignancies are most often sarcoma, but rarely B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma has also been described. In this article, we describe what we believe to be the first published case of anaplas

Scoliosis surgery offers the only resolution of this orthopedic problem. Regarding to important structures, orthopedist maneuvers during surgery around, surgeon's great concentration is demanded. Curious complication after scoliosis surgery is the combination of unilateral Horner's syndrome in conjunction with contralateral Pourfor du Petit's syndrome, which occurred after reoperation with supermounting into the 1. thoracic spondyle of 13-years old girl. It was accompanied by general weakness while patient's trying to get up. Excluding other neurological disorders irritation of cervical sympat

Background: Stress urinary incontinence is one of the most common and debilitating complications following radical prostatectomy. Artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) implantation is the gold standard treatment for moderate to severe post-prostatectomy incontinence. Common complications include device infection, mechanical failure, component migration, urethral erosion, and urethral atrophy, which often require device removal and subsequent reimplantation. To our knowledge, erosion or migration of orthopedic osteosynthesis screws into the lower urinary tract causing new-onset urinary symptoms af

Oblique fractures of the metacarpal and phalanx are inherently unstable especially when there is comminution at the fracture site. Nonoperative management of these fractures requires prolonged immobilization and results in poor outcome. Internal fixation is the preferred method of treatment for these fractures. The various methods used for internal fixation are the Kirschner wires, intraosseous wiring, tension band wiring, minifragment screws and plates. Kirschner wires are the most commonly used fixation device because of their versatility and easy availability. The main disadvantage is lack

Following dorsal laminectomies (L2-L3), the resultant spinal instabilities were stabilized by placing four Steinmann pins and embedding them in acrylic bone cement. The cement was molded about the instability and incorporated the pins and articular process. Mechanical testing was performed to evaluate the strength of the resultant union between the two vertebrae. Three types of samples, in vivo, in vitro and normal were tested using a specially built apparatus. The results showed average maximum loads of 150, 180 and 180 Newtons respectively which represent 29, 42 and 37 MPa in calculated shea

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the evolution of the authors' clinical pathway for the treatment of hemodynamically compromised patients with pelvic fractures was associated with improved patient outcome.
SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Hemodynamically compromised patients with pelvic fractures present a complex challenge. The multidisciplinary trauma team must control hemorrhage, restore hemodynamics, and rapidly identify and treat associated life-threatening injuries. The authors developed a clinical pathway consisting of five primary elements: immediate trauma attending surgeon's presence in the

Surgical treatment of talus fractures can challenge even the most skilled foot and ankle surgeon. Complicated fracture patterns combined with joint dislocation of variable degrees require accurate assessment, sound understanding of principles of fracture care, and broad command of internal fixation techniques needed for successful surgical care. Elimination of unnecessary soft tissue dissection, a low threshold for surgical reduction, liberal use of malleolar osteotomy to expose body fracture, and detailed attention to fracture reduction and joint alignment are critical to the success of treat

For more than 2 decades ventral derotation spondylodesis (Zielke VDS) as a major improvement over Dwyer instrumentation (DI) was the gold standard of instrumented curve correction and stabilization from the anterior approach. As the first available system it enables a true three-dimensional curve correction. A disadvantage is the low internal stabilization capability with a need for long-term external stabilization by means of cast and brace treatment postoperatively. Meanwhile with the development of modern single and dual solid rod systems these disadvantages can be avoided completely. Video

Analysis of treatment of 123 patients with disseminated forms of tuberculous spondylitis is presented. Among the patients 67 (54.4%) subjects were over 55 years of age. The main cause of disseminated spondylitis forms was ungroundlessly prolonged conservative treatment under bed regime. As a result, symptoms of low cardiac activity were seen in 79 (64.2%), lymphovenous stasis in 22 (17.8%) and osteoporotic signs in 38 (30.8%) patients. Complications and concurrent diseases in 41 (33.3%) of the cases prompted surgery from the posterior approach, in 82 (66.7%)--from the anterior approach with re

Fifty infants undergoing treatment in the Pavlik harness for congenital hip dysplasia (CDH) were serially evaluated with ultrasound. Comparison with clinical and radiographic examinations showed sonography to be 100% sensitive and highly specific. Discrepancies between the studies are attributed to the greater sensitivity of the technique compared with the physical examination and/or radiographs. Using this method, it is possible to significantly reduce radiation exposure to the infant being treated for CDH.

The different methods described in the literature for the reduction of severe spondylolisthesis are reviewed. The case histories of two girls with neurological deficits in their legs due to Grade IV spondylolisthesis are described. Reduction and fusion by the posterior route in a one-stage operation were performed on these patients. For this purpose special instruments have been designed to exert a controlled force on the displaced vertebra in two perpendicular directions. Technical details of the procedure are reported. In both patients intervertebral and posterolateral fusion were carried ou
