BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a known complication especially in people with traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). Although some risk factors have already been described, the pathophysiology of HO is still unknown. The pelvis is the most common region for HO occurrence. However, the prevalence of HO by muscle groups about the hip is not well described.
PURPOSE: To analyze the prevalence of early HO in muscle groups about the hip in 267 patients with SCI.
PATIENT SAMPLE: 267 patients with traumatic SCI and pelvic HO.
METHODS: Between January 2001 and December 2014, 267 p

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a serious complication of traumatic elbow injuries, particularly fracture-dislocations. Limited data exist in the literature regarding the risk factors associated with HO formation in these injuries. The purpose of this study was to review the incidence of HO after fracture-dislocation of the elbow and to identify potential risk factors associated with its formation.
METHODS: Twenty-seven patients (28 elbows) were surgically treated for elbow fracture-dislocations during 8 years, with an average follow-up of 14 months. Records were reviewed with at

To date, no reports have presented radiculopathy secondary to heterotopic ossification following lumbar total disc arthroplasty. The authors present a previously unpublished complication of lumbar total disk arthroplasty (TDA) secondary to heterotopic ossification (HO) in the spinal canal, and they propose a modification to the McAfee classification of HO. The patient had undergone an L5/S1 lumbar TDA two years prior due to discogenic back pain. His preoperative back pain was significantly relieved, but he developed new, atraumatic onset radiculopathy. Radiographs and a computed tomography mye

Over 60% of our severely combat-injured patient population develops radiographically apparent heterotopic ossification. Nearly a third of these require surgical excision of symptomatic lesions, a procedure that is fraught with complications, and delays or regresses functional rehabilitation in many cases. Unfortunately, for the combat injured, medical contraindications and logistical limitations limit widespread use of conventional means of primary prophylaxis. Better means of risk stratification are needed to both mitigate the risk of current means of primary prophylaxis as well as to evaluat

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is rare in nonambulatory patients, as mechanical factors play important roles in the development of the disease. We report a case of SCFE, which occurred in a 12-year-old girl with a nonambulatory status after cerebral infarction. SCFE occurred after she received passive range of motion exercise and extracorporeal shock wave treatment for neurogenic heterotopic ossification around the hip joint. The patient was successfully managed by a stepwise approach, with radiological and clinical improvements.

Heterotopic mesenteric ossification (HMO) is an uncommon disorder that may sometimes be misdiagnosed. It can cause bowel or intestinal perforation, which may also lead to serious complications or even death. Heterotopic bone formation in the omentum, which is called heterotopic omental ossification (HOO) and is one type of HMO, is considered to be an exceedingly rare event. To our knowledge, about 29 cases of HMO have been reported in previous studies, of which three were HOO. We herein describe a case of HOO occurring in a 39-year-old Chinese man with no medical history of abdominal surgery.

Anconeus interpositional arthroplasty has been used in the treatment of radiocapitellar and radioulnar joint problems occurring after trauma. We performed anconeus interposition arthroplasty in a 31-year-old male patient who developed heterotopic ossification (HTO) in the elbow following surgical treatment of an isolated radial neck fracture. Treatment with implant removal and excision of the radial head resulted in recurrent HTO and a stiff elbow. The patient underwent excision of the heterotrophic new bone and mobilization of the proximal radius. The anconeus muscle was mobilized and interpo

Radiation therapy is commonly used to prevent heterotopic ossification, and the dose-dependent effects of this treatment have been well documented in patients after total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, the efficacy and dose requirement of radiation therapy to prevent heterotopic ossification of nonsurgical origin have not been studied. The purpose of this retrospective case-control study was to determine the effects of prophylactic radiation therapy on severe heterotopic ossification recurrence, postoperative range of motion (ROM), and wound healing in patients with heterotopic ossification

Five hundred consecutive patients undergoing primary cemented knee arthroplasties were prospectively followed up and evaluated for the presence of heterotopic ossification. Of the patients studied, 95% had osteoarthritis and 5% had inflammation. A radiographic grading system was devised based on the size and location of the heterotopic bone. The overall incidence of heterotopic ossification in this group was 15%. The patients who developed HO tended to be heavier than the average and were more likely to be men. This is the most comprehensive prospective study of the incidence of HO in primary

We report a case of preoperative embolization in a 64-year-old patient suffering from total stiffness of the right hip joint due to heterotopic ossification following brain injury and pertrochanteric fracture of the right femur. A previous attempt of operative treatment could not be performed successfully due to bleeding complications. After the embolization of the correlating hypervascularisation, the surgical procedure was redone and finished with good result and minimal bleeding complications during the operation and a tolerable drop of the haemoglobin concentration postoperatively.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the risk factors of heterotopic ossification after spinal cord injury.
METHODS: Of 104 patients with spinal cord injury, 47 (45.2%) were complicated by heterotopic ossification of the hip. These patients with heterotopic ossification were compared with 57 patients without heterotopic ossification.
RESULTS: Statistical analysis showed that complete paraplegia, spasticity and pressure sore were significantly (P < 0.05) or highly significantly (P < 0.01) related to heterotopic ossification formation. The coexistence of two or three of these factors in the paraplegic patien

This report describes a 37-year-old man presenting with a gait disturbance due to spastic paraparesis. Physical findings showed typical features of Albright's hereditary osteodystrophy, including short stature, obesity, brachydactyly and dental hypoplasia. He was diagnosed as having pseudohypoparathyroidism type Ia, on the basis of his hypocalcaemia, hyperphosphataemia, increased plasma level of parathyroid hormone (PTH), and the unresponsiveness to exogenous PTH loading of his urinary excretion of both nephrogenous cyclic adenosine monophosphate and phosphate. Neurogenic heterotopic ossification (NHO), a disabling complication of severe central nervous system injuries, involves ectopic periarticular bone formation that causes profound functional impairments and reduced quality of life. This review highlights recent advances in NHO, especially focusing on the neuro-immune-osteogenic axis. Rather than a merely local disorder, NHO is a systemic response driven by neural, inflammatory, and interorgan signals, notably involving BMP/Smad, macrophage activation, and neuropeptide pathways. While combined-injury animal models advance mechanistic insights, th

Heterotopic ossification (HO) of the Achilles tendon induces pain and impairs tendon mechanical function, yet its pathogenic mechanisms remain largely unknown. Given that neurotransmitters, inflammatory cytokines, and mechanical loading are highly associated with HO incidence, we raised a hypothesis that activation of sensory neurons within the injured Achilles tendon may be one critical cause driving HO progression. This present work demonstrates that Netrin-1, predominantly secreted by macrophages at the injured site, profoundly promotes the regeneration of Piezo2-expressing sensory nerves i

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The skeletal system is one of the main targets of endocrine hormone dysregulation. After briefly summarizing the endocrinal regulation of the skeleton, this review focuses on the recent advances in our understanding of how endocrine dysregulations promote the development of heterotopic bones after trauma.
RECENT FINDINGS: Endocrinal regulation of skeletal fetal development, and growth is well established. However, whether trauma such as central nervous system insults, hip arthroplasty and severe burns trigger heterotopic ossifications via hormonal dysregulation has just beg

Introduction: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of extraskeletal bone within soft tissue that occurs after traumatic injuries like severe burns. Although the risk of developing HO is associated with burns >30% total body surface area (TBSA), burns on the arms with or without skin grafting, and ventilation days, large clinical studies identifying the risk for HO in burns are not available. Using a large real-world patient database, we aimed to identify factors influencing the development of HO in burn survivors. We also investigated the effects of HO on burn recovery following seve

BACKGROUND: Total wrist arthroplasty as a procedure in patients with advanced osteoarthritis has gained more popularity in recent years. As early implants had high rates of complications and newer implants have only slowly gained traction, some sequelae have not been reported yet.
CASE PRESENTATION: This study presents the case of a male German patient, 57 years old, with advanced osteoarthritis who received arthroplasty and presented with severely restricted range of motion 6 weeks after surgery. Radiographs revealed signs of heterotopic ossification that could be confirmed during the revisi

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP; MIM# 135100) is an ultra-rare congenital disorder caused by gain-of-function point mutations in the Activin receptor A type I (ACVR1, also known as ALK2) gene. FOP is characterized by episodic heterotopic ossification (HO) in skeletal muscles, tendons, ligaments, or other soft tissues that progressively causes irreversible loss of mobility. FOP mutations cause mild ligand-independent constitutive activation as well as ligand-dependent bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) pathway hypersensitivity of mutant ACVR1. BMP signaling is also a key pathway for me

Heterotopic ossification (HO) refers to the formation of pathologic bone in nonskeletal tissues (including muscles, tendons or other soft tissues). HO typically occurs after a severe injury and can occur in any part of the body. HO lesions are highly vascularized. Angiogenesis, which is the formation of new blood vessels, plays an important role in the pathophysiology of HO. Surgical resection is considered an effective treatment for HO. However, it is difficult to completely remove new vessels, which can lead to the recurrence of HO and is often accompanied by significant problems such as int
