Vanishing mandible.

Massive osteolysis is a rare, insidious, chronic disease characterized by progressive resorption of contiguous osseous structures. In 1838 Jackson first described a case of disappearing humerus. More than 150 cases have since been described in the international literature, with fewer then 35 involving a maxillofacial site, usually the mandible. The exact cause of this disease remains unknown, but ongoing clinical research attempts to better understand the etiology. This case report is to our knowledge the second case in the international literature (after that reported by Thoma in 1933) to rep

Gorham's disease and diffuse lymphangiomatosis in children and adolescents.

Gorham's disease is a rare disorder of unknown etiology and variable clinical presentation that is characterized by proliferation of thin-walled vascular channels resulting in destruction and resorption of osseous matrix. The condition is frequently under recognized or misdiagnosed. There is no standard treatment defined for this disease. Here we report on eight children diagnosed with Gorham's disease at our institution over a ten-year period. Soft tissue lymphangioma was present in seven and six children had splenic involvement. Disease stabilization and improvement was observed on treatment

Gorham's disease: an autopsy report.

We present the case report of a 35-year-old man with Gorham's disease (disappearing bone disease, massive osteolysis) with initial clinical findings of small bowel lymphangiomatosis and multicentric osteolysis. The patient, who otherwise was healthy, had a chylothorax develop and he died 9 months later of thoracic and pulmonary complications. An autopsy revealed absence of the proximal thoracic duct and significant lymphangiectatic abnormalities of the pleural, peritoneal, diaphragmatic, splenic, and small bowel tissue with lymphangiomatous masses in the thoracic and mediastinal regions. The f

Gorham's disease complicated by chyloma of the chest wall.

Gorham's disease is a rare disorder characterized by a non-malignant proliferation of thin-walled lymphatic vessels that result in progressive bony destruction and often extend into the surrounding soft tissues. Chylothorax is a common complication in cases of mediastinal involvement. Here we report a case of a 22-year-old male with Gorham's syndrome complicated by chyloma of the chest wall, but without chylothorax. To our knowledge, this is the first report demonstrating an abnormality of the parietal pleura prior to the clinical development of the chylothorax.

Severe osteoporosis in familial Hajdu-Cheney syndrome: progression of acro-osteolysis and osteoporosis during long-term follow-up.

Hajdu-Cheney syndrome is an autosomal dominant inherited osteodysplastic bone disease with the hallmarks of acro-osteolysis, skull deformations, and generalized osteoporosis. Very few patients have been followed long-term with respect to the prognosis of acro-osteolysis and osteoporosis. Here we describe a 39-year-old woman and her 19-year-old daughter who are both affected with the Hajdu-Cheney syndrome. Skeletal lesions were followed in the mother between the ages of 22 and 39 years. The acro-osteolytic lesions progressed markedly and caused shortening of several fingers; some end phalanges

Massive Osteolysis of the Femur (Gorham-Stout Disease) Requiring Total Femur Replacement: A Case Report.

CASE: Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) is a rare disorder marked by massive bone destruction. A 56-year-old woman with GSD presented to our hospital with a proximal femur fracture. She was initially diagnosed with a simple fracture and underwent open reduction and internal fixation using an intramedullary nail. However, the delayed diagnosis of GSD resulted in postponed appropriate treatment. Although the intramedullary nail helped prevent mechanical bone failure, extensive osteolysis continued, ultimately necessitating total femur replacement. CONCLUSION: This case highlights the importance of con

Gorham Stout disease of the temporal bone with cerebrospinal fluid leak.

Gorham Stout disease (GSD) is a rare disease characterized by the proliferation of endothelial lined vessels and replacement of bone by fibrous tissue. The main imaging features are progressive osteolysis and cortical resorption. Temporal bone involvement is rare but presents as a destructive bone lesion that may be misinterpreted as more common lytic processes in the pediatric population, such as infection or Langerhans cell histiocytosis. GSD of the temporal bone is associated with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks, may present with otorrhea, and can mimic other causes of ear drainage. Here, w

[Clinical features of Gorham-Stout syndrome and literature review].

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical presentations, radiographic findings and histological pathology of bones, diagnosis, treatment options and prognosis for patients with Gorham-Stout syndrome (GSS). METHODS: Clinical data of 5 GSS patients seen from January 1980 to January 2008 were reviewed. RESULTS: (1) There were 2 males and 3 females, aged 15 years to 37 years (mean age was 30.2 years). (2) All of them had osteolysis, but the site and extent of involved bones were not the same. Three cases had large amount of bloody pleural effusion and two of them had also chylous effusion. All of the

Rapid idiopathic osteolysis of the humeral head and clavicle.

Idiopathic osteolysis is a very rare bone condition of unknown origin. The length of the illness usually lasts for several years. The purpose of this paper is to point out the possibility of severely rapid progression of idiopathic osteolysis and to contribute to a better understanding of the natural history of Gorham-Stout disease. We report the case of a 58-year old man whose right humeral head and lateral clavicle had disappeared as a result of massive osteolysis observed only six months after onset of the symptoms. Such rapid progression has not been reported previously. His physical exami

The spectrum of imaging manifestations of Gorham-Stout disease: a novel dynamic contrast-enhanced MR lymphangiography.

BACKGROUND: To describe the radiological features of Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) as evaluated using plain radiography and dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance lymphangiography (DCMRL) imaging techniques. METHODS: Clinical and conventional imaging data were retrospectively reviewed for 15 patients with GSD between January 2001 and December 2020. After December 2018, DCMRL examinations were performed for lymphatic vessel evaluation in patients with GSD and reviewed in four patients. RESULTS: The median age at diagnosis was 9 years (range: 2 months-53 years). The clinical manifestations

Gorham-Stout syndrome, the challenge in diagnosis and unique in treatment: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Gorham-Stout disease is a rare condition with fewer than 400 reported cases in the literature. The presentation of Gorham-Stout disease varies on the basis of location, extent, fracture, and accompanying symptoms. It lacks a specific histopathological appearance but is characterized by vascular changes and the absence of cellular atypia. CASE PRESENTATION: This article presents a case study of a 16-year-old Persian boy with an entire femur with Gorham-Stout disease, highlighting the difficulties in managing this condition. The lack of a clear diagnosis resulted in prolonged proced

Vanishing bone disease (Gorham's disease) - a rare occurrence of unknown etiology.

A 20-year-old male patient presented with painful swelling around left elbow joint. Radiographic examination revealed osteolytic lesion with pathological fracture of lower end of humerus and upper radius. Upper end of ulna was completely absent along with bony erosion. Histopathology of the bony tissue revealed hemangioma-like lesion composed of vascular channels lined by benign endothelium replacing bone. The diagnosis of Gorham's massive osteolysis was made. Gorham's disease is a benign self-limiting condition affecting any age, may involve any part of the skeleton and is characterized by re

[Posttraumatic osteolysing haemangiomatosis (disappearing bone or Gorham syndrome) (author's transl)].

After injury to the palm of the left hand in a 24-year-old woman, haemangiomatosis - taking its origin from the site of urinary - rapidly spread over the left arm, with partially disappearance of metacarpals II--V. Previous angiodysplasia of the hand or enosseous haemangioma could be definitely ruled out. Histological examination of the cavernous haemangioma gave no indication of malignancy. But the tumor spread to the axilla, without metastases. High-voltage radiation arrested the growth. Seven years later, there has been no recurrence, but the limb remains useless. Such cases have been repor

Gorham's disease affecting the maxillofacial skeleton.

Twenty-one cases of Gorham's disease in the maxillofacial region are described in the literature. This case is an additional one. The disease has a slight male predominance. All cases involved either the mandible alone or in association with the maxilla or other bones of the head and neck. The most common symptoms were pain, tooth mobility, mandibular pathological fractures, and facial deformity. The mean duration of symptoms prior to diagnosis was 6.4 years. Treatment included surgery, radiotherapy, and various medications, alone or combined. Four patients died of their disease. The diagnosis
