With the exception of Cryptococcus neoformans, fungi are rarely detected in cerebrospinal fluid obtained from patients having or suspected of having fungal meningitis. A review of the literature reveals that several fungi have been either isolated, observed, or both in cerebrospinal fluid specimens. These fungi include Acremonium species, Aspergillus amstelodami, A. flavus, A. fumigatus, A. oryzae, A. terreus, Blastomyces dermatitidis, Candida albicans, C. tropicalis, C. viswanathii, Coccidioides immitis, Cryptococcus albidus, C. neoformans, Histoplasma capsulatum, Paecilomyces variotii, Parac…

A 10-y-old female green tree python ( Morelia viridis) died of fungal pneumonia caused by Purpureocillium lilacinum, which was confirmed histologically and by PCR and subsequent DNA sequencing. The same fungal species was cultivated from a swab taken from the terrarium in which the snake was housed. Clinical and environmental P. lilacinum isolates were indistinguishable by the typing method applied, strongly suggesting clonal relatedness of both isolates. Because no other underlying predisposing respiratory infection could be detected by virus-specific PCR or histopathology, P. lilacinum was c

Purpureocillium lilacinum (formerly Paecilomyces lilacinus) is an environmental saprophytic mold and an increasingly recognized opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised hosts, most often causing cutaneous, ocular, or sinopulmonary disease; bloodstream infection (fungemia) is rare. The initial microscopic morphology on Gram stain of a positive blood culture can simulate yeast, delaying correct identification and appropriate antifungal therapy. We describe a 67-year-old man with relapsed multiple myeloma and therapy-related mixed-phenotype acute leukemia, further complicated by a prior Mycoba…

The clinical and microbiological characteristics of 103 patients with cultures positive for non-Aspergillus moulds in the period 2000 to 2008 were described. Among these patients, 27 had proven or probable invasive infections caused by Fusarium (n = 12), Paecilomyces (n = 7), Zygomycetes (n = 5) and Scedopsorium species (n = 3). The incidence of invasive infections caused by these moulds has not increased during the study period. Lung was the most common infection site and disseminated disease was observed in three leukaemic patients. The overall mortality rate was 40.7%, and was highest in ca…

An outbreak of pulmonary abscessation due to the common environmental fungus Paecilomyces variotii occurred in a colony of gp91(phox-/-)mice, which lack functional NADPH oxidase, the enzyme complex responsible for generating the respiratory burst in phagocytes. Parenchyma surrounding the abscesses showed intense acidophilic macrophage pneumonia, and similar but much milder lesions were present in each of 24 gp91(phox-/-)mice free from other pulmonary lesions. These findings indicate a high prevalence of acidophilic macrophage pneumonia in gp91(phox-/-)mice, or at least in this particular stock…

Paecilomycosis is a new type of systemic mycosis caused by different species of fungi of the genus Paecilomyces. Paecilomycosis-complicated echinococcosis and asthma run a severe course. A complication of mycosis is accompanied by secondary immunodeficiency. A good result was obtained in the treatment of ill children by using the fungicide diflucan and the immunomodulator polyoxidonium. In the examinees with paecilomycosis-complicated echinococcosis, secondary immunodeficiency was characterized by a statistical significant reduction in the blood levels of the lymphoid cells CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, C…

Over a two-year period (1976-1977 and 1980-1981), 66 cases of bacterial and mycotic cases of keratitis were diagnosed in the Eye Clinic of the General Hospital in Kandy, Sri Lanka. The clinical and microbiologic aspects of these cases are described. Noteworthy was the first known human case caused by Paecilomyces farinosus, a geophilic species, commonly encountered as an insect parasite throughout the world. The bacterial and the other fungal etiologic agents isolated and identified were: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, Fusarium oxysporum, and La…

BACKGROUND: Purpureocillium lilacinum eye infections (previously called Paecilomyces lilacinus) make up a significant percentage of the recorded cases of infection by this fungus, and is considered as an emerging pathogen.
AIMS: To report a case of ocular mycosis in a patient aged 70, with a double corneal transplantation in the right eye, and exhibiting a poor response to antifungal and surgical treatment.
METHODS: Corneal ring and ocular tissues obtained by surgical procedures were cultured in common mycological media. Molecular identification of the isolated fungus was obtained.
RESULTS:…

Since 2010, colonizations/infections by Rasamsonia argillacea species complex, previously known as Geosmithia argillacea, have been regularly reported in literature. We reviewed all available cases focusing on pathogenesis and clinical relevance. The number of cases may be underestimated, as these fungi are frequently misidentified as Penicillium or Paecilomyces species. Major underlying conditions that predispose for infections by the R. argillacea species complex include cystic fibrosis (CF) and chronic granulomatous disease (CGD). While the pathogenic role of the colonization of CF lungs is…

Many approaches have been proposed to reduce the toxicity of hazardous substances such as lead in the environment. Several techniques using microorganisms rely on metal removal from solution by non-specific biosorption. However, immobilization of metals through formation of biominerals mediated by metabolic processes offers another solution but which has been given limited attention. In this work, we have investigated lead biomineralization by Paecilomyces javanicus, a fungus isolated from a lead-contaminated soil, in a liquid medium. P. javanicus was able to grow in the presence of metallic l…

We reviewed 14 cases of paecilomycosis in a tertiary care veterinary hospital and all reports of the disease in the veterinary literature. Paecilomycosis is a rare disease primarily of dogs, horses, reptiles, and humans. Clinical manifestations in veterinary patients vary but include disseminated disease and diskospondylitis, particularly in dogs: pneumonia in dogs, horses, and reptiles; keratitis in horses; and miscellaneous local infections. It is important to have an appropriate index of suspicion because the diagnosis can be difficult, particularly in localized disease where it is difficul

The commercial antibiotics tetracycline (3), minocycline (4), chlortetracycline (5), oxytetracycline (6), and doxycycline (7) were biotransformed by a marine-derived fungus Paecilomyces sp. to yield seco-cyclines A-H (9-14, 18 and 19) and hemi-cyclines A-E (20-24). Structures were assigned by detailed spectroscopic analysis, and in the case of 10 X-ray crystallography. Parallel mechanisms account for substrate-product specificity, where 3-5 yield seco-cyclines and 6 and 7 yield hemi-cyclines. The susceptibility of 3-7 to fungal biotransformation is indicative of an unexpected potential for tet…

Nematophagous, or helminthophagous fungi of the genera Duddingtonia, Arthrobotrys, Monacrosporium, Pochonia, Paecilomyces, and Mucor, have been used over the years in in vitro and in vivo experiments to control helminth parasites that are potentially zoonotic. These fungi have shown efficacy against the following helminth genera: Ancylostoma, Toxocara, Enterobius, Strongyloides, Angiostrongylus, Taenia, Fasciola, and Schistosoma. The results obtained from these experiments, together with studies on soil contamination, suggest the viability of their use as a sustainable and effective strategy t…

Fungal keratitis is a severe corneal infection, and the causative fungi include various rare fungal species. Fungal keratitis caused by Talaromyces species has yet to be reported, and there is no information about this fungus as a cause of keratitis. A 77-year-old man developed fungal keratitis while waiting for a donor cornea due to bullous keratopathy in his left eye. Fungal culture of a corneal scraping grew filamentous fungi, which were morphologically identified as Paecilomyces species. The corneal infection did not improve after topical administration of 1% voriconazole, and ribosomal DN…

Less common and emerging fungal pathogens are often resistant to conventional antifungal therapy and may cause severe morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised hosts. Some Scedosporium species may be completely resistant to antifungal therapy. Hyaline septated filamentous fungi, such as Fusarium species, Acremonium species, Paecilomyces species, and Trichoderma species, are increasingly reported as causing invasive mycoses refractory to amphotericin B therapy. Dematiaceous septated filamentous fungi, such as Bipolaris species may cause pneumonia, sinusitis, and CNS infections that are unres…
