Benign salivary gland tumors are rarely found in children and adolescents compared with adults. Nasal septoplasty is a common procedure performed in plastic surgery and otorhinolaryngology. Many complications after septoplasty have been reported. Palatal perforation is one of the rarest complications with only a few cases reported in the literature. The reported cases had misdiagnosed submucousal cleft palate or high arched palate, but a patient with palatal perforation after septoplasty is presented here which have had neither evidence of submucousal cleft palate nor high arched palate.

Donor site necrosis is a very rare complication of palatal rotational flaps. The aim of this case report is to present a 43-year-old female, Type I diabetic patient with a chronic oroantral fistula in the right second molar region. The patient had bony necrosis in the donor site following palatal rotational flap operation. The treatment approach and the alternative methods are discussed.

The authors present a girl with typical characteristics of oral-facial-digital syndrome type II (Mohr syndrome) with a cleft soft palate and pendulous tongue nodules. Because of feeding difficulties, electromyography was performed of both morphologically identical halves of the soft palate. One half showed a normal muscle action potential and in the other half electrical silence was registered. Exploratory surgery during palatoplasty showed a fatty hamartoma in the half of the palate in which no electric potentials had been registered.

A prospective, randomized study using an acrylic palatal stabilizing device (PSD) was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of this device in preventing disruptions in palatal architecture. A total of 26 premature infants with birth weights of 540 to 1740 g, and intubated orally for a period varying from 7 to 109 days were randomized to control and experimental groups. A multicentre prospective trial was commenced in July 1984 to establish the incidence of otitis media with effusion (OME) in children born with a cleft of the palate. Additionally, the data recorded would allow an assessment of the effect of palatal closure on middle ear function.
