A 66-year-old female patient complained of hoarseness and dyspnea under exertion following total thyroidectomy. Due to a faulty operating technique both nerves to the vocal cords were damaged. From the operation report it emerged that the dissection was carried out by protecting the border lamellae but the recurrent laryngeal nerve could not be found on both sides. This article presents the external expert opinion, the decision of the arbitration board and the assessment of the case by two specialist physicians.

We report an extremely rare case with bilateral and symmetric dumbbell ganglioneuromas of the cervical spine in an elderly patient. A 72-year-old man came by ambulance to our hospital due to progressive incomplete paraplegia. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated bilateral symmetric dumbbell tumors at the C1/2 level. We performed total resection of the intracanalar tumor, aiming at complete decompression of the spinal cord, and partial and subtotal resection of foraminal outside portions. Histopathological examination of the surgical specimen indicated the tumor cells to be spindle cells wit

Otoplasty, for prominent ear correction, is the most common aesthetic surgery procedure done in children. While the outcome often has a positive impact on the psychological state of the patient, the procedure itself does have associated complications that must be considered. Common complications include hematomas, infection, necrosis, outer ear canal stenosis, extrusion of sutures, insufficient correction, overcorrection, keloids, and hypertrophic scars. This is the first case report of facial nerve palsy as a complication following otoplasty.

The aim of this study was to evaluate patients with vocal fold polyps using laryngeal electromyography (LEMG) for the presence of vocal fold paresis and to compare transnasal fiberoptic and rigid stroboscopic findings between polyp patients with normal LEMG and with vocal fold paresis. Thirty-five patients with a vocal fold polyp underwent transnasal fiberoptic laryngoscopy, rigid laryngostroboscopy, and LEMG. The findings were compared between the LEMG-confirmed vocal fold paresis patients and the normal LEMG patients. LEMG resulted in a diagnosis of unilateral or bilateral vocal fold paresis…

In this retrospective study it was found that 549 out of 1175 patients seen for vestibular assessment within an 8-year period within a district hospital service showed lateralised canal paresis as determined by caloric testing. It was found that there was a tendency for canal paresis, indicative of vestibular hypofunction, to be on the side of handedness. This bias showed statistical significance, (chi-squared, p < .005), for the patients overall, as well as for the 65 left-handers considered separately, (p < .05). Surprisingly, this form of bias does not appear to have been reported previousl…

Three girls, aged 3, 7 and 13 years, developed acute peripheral facial palsy. The first patient was initially diagnosed as having Bell's palsy. The third patient had negative serology at first assessment, on the basis of which the diagnosis of Lyme disease was temporarily rejected. Ultimately, all three appeared to have neuroborreliosis. They were treated with intravenous ceftriaxone and recovered well. Facial palsy in childhood is frequently caused by Lyme borreliosis and infection with Borrelia burgdorferi should therefore be investigated, even if there are no signs of a tick bite or erythem

OBJECTIVE: To explore whether interleukin-10 (IL-10) could promote the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) via inhibiting differentiation of bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs) to alveolar type 2 (AT II) epithelial cells.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 25 ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome) patients admitted in our hospital from December 2015 to February 2018 were enrolled. Meanwhile, 25 healthy controls in the same period were selected as control group. Serum level of IL-10 in each subject was detected via ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay). BMSCs were isolated and cult

A 64-year-old man presented with the acute onset of unilateral blindness and ipsilateral ocular motor paresis. Occlusion of the central retinal artery associated with thrombosis of the internal carotid artery in the cavernous sinus was demonstrated by angiography and magnetic resonance imaging. Cases of carotid thrombosis associated with ipsilateral ocular motor paresis are rare. The pathophysiology of intracavernous carotid thrombosis is discussed in connection with blood supply of the cranial nerves in the cavernous sinus.

Twelve patients with Shy-Drager syndrome (SDS) presenting symptoms of multiple nervous system atrophy and orthostatic hypotension were examined for laryngeal movement disorders and vocal impairment in speech. Vocal fold abductor paresis was found in 11 patients and was bilateral in 10. Speech task performance was recorded in SDS patients, Parkinson patients and age- and sex-matched controls. Trained listeners with inter-rated reliability greater than or equal to .85 judged each recording on 20 attributes while blind to speaker identity. SDS patients had a breathy and strained voice quality, re…

A case of periodic paralysis is reported that had to be treated by mechanical ventilation. Symptoms and course of this attack are demonstrated and it is shown how diagnosis was reached. Provocative factors of periodic hypokaliemic paralysis are discussed and their importance in anaesthesia is emphasised.

Of 100 consecutive, adult, hospitalized inpatients with acquired unilateral oculosympathetic palsy, in 63 the central neuron was involved-usually due to strokes; in 21, tumor or trauma affected the preganglionic neuron; and in 13, postganglionic damage was sustained from a variety of causes. The preponderance of first neuron involvement by stroke is in part a reflection of patient sampling, but emphasizes the fact that central causes of Horner's syndrome are common.

Paresis of the left side upper plexus brachialis is diagnosed to a boy of 2;8 years. The trouble appeared after a smallpox vaccination, which had been carried out successfully. There are no symptoms of CNS-disturbance. serumneuritis and virogenic radiculatis are discussed as pathogenic variants. Although postvaccinal peripheral nervous lesions very seldom occur, it does seem possible that the ailment in question could be a consequence of the smallpox vaccination.
