RATIONALE: Pyomyositis is characterized by an insidious and multifactorial inflammatory process, which is often caused by hematogenous pathogen. Predisposing risk factors include immunodeficiency, diabetes, malignancy, or trauma. The spectrum of clinical presentation depends on disease severity, typically presented by fever and hip pain. BACKGROUND: Paronychia is a well-known, but difficult to treat cutaneous toxicity associated with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitor therapy. An outbreak of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus pyoderma occurred in the nursery of a tertiary-care referral center. All strains retrieved from the outbreak, including one from a nurse's infected finger, were typed by arbitrarily primed polymerase chain reaction and automated ribotyping. The results indicated that the spread of the outbreak was probably facilitated by contamination of the nurse with paronychia.

Ingrown toenail, or onychocryptosis, is a common inflammatory disease of the hallux. It results from the alteration of fit of the nail plate in the lateral nail fold. Ingrown toenails are usually seen in adolescents and young adults and can affect daily activities and social life. Generally, ingrown toenails are classified into three stages, including the inflammatory stage, the abscess stage, and the granulation stage. In this article, we present the rare case of a man with a diagnosis of paronychia with sporangium formation causing an ingrown toenail.

We report a case of refractory Fusarium paronychia in a 42-year-old man with Behçet's disease receiving oral cyclosporin and corticosteroid. Symptoms resembling candidal paronychia of his little finger could not be cured by topical ketoconazole and oral terbinafine. The pathogen was identified as Fusarium solani species complex by gene analysis, and was multiple drug resistant. The case eventually resolved by occlusive dressing therapy with 0.5% amorolfine cream for 3 months.

Nail psoriasis can mimic conditions like paronychia, complicating diagnosis. We retrospectively evaluated the epidemiology of onychomycosis and/or paronychia in 172 patients attending the Clinic of Dermatology and Venereology over a 5 year period. Although yeast isolates, belonging to the Candida species, represented the most frequent etiologic agents of these infections, an increasing prevalence of fungal infections due to emerging fungal pathogens (EFP) was noted throughout this time period. In particular, EFP as causative agents of these infections increased from 0 to 28.4% from 1998 to 2002.
